Stewart Watt

August 8, 2023

Peacefully, with a smile and with family by his side, in London, Ontario on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in his 89th year.

Stew was the beloved husband of Jane Watt (née Diffin). Adored father of Laura, Allan, Evelyn (Will) and Nancy. Dear Grampa of Lindsay, Alexander, Jory, Heather, Sean and the late James. Dear Great-Grampa of Alyssa, Tyson, Kaylie, Mason and Ellie. Loving son of Hartland Watt and his wife, Edythe (née Thompson). Cherished brother of Carolyn Watt. Loving nephew of Agnes Thompson.

Stew grew up in Toronto, graduating from Humberside Collegiate. He attended Ryerson Polytechnic Institute before enjoying a long and satisfying career with British American oil and its successor companies, Gulf Canada and Petro Canada.

He was a loving and involved father to his children and to their children.  He was skier and a sailor. Stew was a Mason and Past Master of his lodge, Ionic 716.  He was the Grand Lodge Piper in 2011 and was also active in the Mocha Shrine.

Stew and Jane travelled, and shared many adventures during their retirement. They once played with The Pipes and Drums of Canada for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth at Balmoral Castle.

Cremation has taken place.  Visitation will take place at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Thursday, August 24, 2023 from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m., with a celebration of Stew’s life being held at 2:00 p.m. Those wishing to make a donation in Stew’s memory are asked to consider the Canadian Cancer Society, the Ingersoll Pipe Band, or a charity of your choice.

Stew was a dear friend and mentor to me. Many years ago he introduced me to sailing, for which I developed a passion, sailing on my own boat until recently. I had the privilege of accompanying Stew on several Great Lake sails and “bare boat” charters in the Caribbean. Stew had a great many talents and pursued them all vigorously, with a wonderful sense of humour and Jane at his side. For me, Stew embodied Rudyard Kipling’s line “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…” Jane will recall the stories of losing our dinghy (good thing Mike Fox was a good swimmer) and wrapping the dinghy line around our prop (George Ker’s snorkel skills paid off). But these catastrophes seemed all in a day’s fun for Stew. God speed my friend.

Stew was a gentleman's gentleman. A greeting of a warm hug and a beaming smile was Stews style, soft spoken and gentle in word and deed he will be missed by us and all who knew him.
