Dear Ruth, Joseph and Joyce, It's been a long while since we've seen each other. Stephen was such a kind, genuine and honest man. I will always remember his happy spirit and his fervent love of God. He was a great counselor, mentor and friend. He made positive impact on me during my impressionable years at ACF and I will always remember him fondly. My deepest condolences to you and your family. He will be greatly missed.

~ Anna Hwang

Stephen is a great friend to have, though we mainly crossed path around 1990 as we left Western. We were relieved that he and Ruth came to London just at the right time, after the Lord prompted a few of us to start the Asian Christian Fellowship (ACF), alongside the Chinese Christian Fellowship on campus at Western then. Over the years, we kept in touch and Stephen kept me posted about the development of ACF. Over the years, he was involved in our wedding, especially when Joseph, the son in the family, was kind and brave enough to be our ring bearer. Over the years, he proved to be a great counselor and mentor among students. Over the years, he also invited me back to London to meet students at Western ACF, as well as to speak to some brothers about Faith at Work matters. Over the years, with the help of the Holy Spirit, his psychiatry background equipped him well to listen, guide and direct students in this very crucial time of their formative years, defined by Dr James Dodson to be between 16 to 26. The many encouraging and heart-warming messages on the condolences page by former students and even other adults testified to Stephen's wisdom, faithfulness and servanthood. Praise the Lord. Now, we are saddened by his passing, but are looking forward to see him again in eternity to catch up, and to worship our almighty God. May his legacy live on. May those of us impacted by his life carry on his Good work. May the Lord continue to guide His ministry through the ACF at Western and beyond. May God provide the peace in spite of the difficult transition time ahead for Ruth, Joseph and Joyce, as well as to the grandchildren. May the good memory of Stephen comfort us all. Shalom on this Father's day.

Peter, myself and our two girls will never forget Stephen's kindness towards our family. He was always humble and genuine, sincere in his love towards others. When we first came to Canada, Stephen and Ruth welcomed us and helped us settle in, treating us like family. This love was consistent through the years, especially when I was hospitalized with an aneurysm. We were saddened to hear of Stephen's passing and he will be deeply missed. We take comfort in the knowledge that Stephen is with the Lord, free from suffering. He will always be remembered for his faithfulness to God and love for those in his life.

~ Peter & Eve

Uncle Stephen was such a great man of God. His intention and desire to disciple others and bring others to be stronger in the faith is what I always remember him by. Despite his busy schedule, he always made time to talk and was genuinely interested in how you were doing with his easy smile. He wanted those "deeper" conversations. He will be missed and I am glad that he is now in heaven with our God. Deepest condolences to Ruth and the family.

~ Kan Cheung

Our deepest condolences to Ruth and family. One of our earliest memories of Stephen was being invited in to see his garden. Stephen's dedication to gardening was an inspiration to us. The poppies that Stephen showed us that day were colourful and beautiful. We will plant poppies in our garden to remember Stephen.

~ Sherman & Pancy Lang

Our prayers and deepest condolences to Ruth and the family. Stephen is now enjoying the wonderful fellowship with our Lord and Savoir. What joy he must be experiencing right now. Stephen's genuine, passionate and caring spirit has been a tremendous support for me during my time at Western and AFC. He will always be remembered.

My deepest condolences to you and your family, Ruth. Although I know that Stephen is with the Lord, I am sad and will miss him dearly. He was a good friend and counselor who took the time to minister to ACF and encouraged my faith. I remember the car rides me gave me to and from events and church. Very fond memories of a kind man with a great laugh.

~ Cindy Lau

Dear, Ruth Joseph, Krista, and Joyce: I haven't seen Stephen in person in many years, but I did have him as a contact on Facebook, and he always looked so happy to be with all of you. Stephen was always a supported counselor to me at ACF during my years at Western, and I will always remember that he is truly one of the most caring, compassionate, and faithful people I have ever met. Please have my condolences in the wake of this sad event. God bless you all.

~ Kimberly Banow (Leung)

Dear Ruth and family, My condolences and prayers are with you. We thank the Lord for our time with Stephen during our university days at ACF. He was a great counselor that was so committed to caring for the fellowship. We will continue to cherish the memories at ACF we shared with him. May God bring comfort and peace during this difficult time.

~ Joanne Tse

Dear Ruth and family, I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you through your grief and thoughts of a future without him. He was a wonderful counsellor to those of us at ACF, and undoubtedly a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. I owe my current walk with Christ to Stephen and ACF. I'm not sure I would have remained a Christian if I hadn't had ACF and his care during my first year of university. He was such an encouragement to me. I am saddened by his loss, yet I can imagine him and his great smile in heaven, urging us to keep on for God's glory until we meet again. Much love to you all.

~ Matthea Schumpelt (Orr)

Bill and I were shocked and very saddened to hear of Stephen's passing, not knowing he had been ill. A very dedicated worker for the Kingdom of God on earth has been taken into the presence of the King, and we can only rejoice on his behalf. We extend our sincerest sympathies to you, Ruth, and to your family, and wish you God's grace to endure the interim until you are reunited with husband and father. Our brief acquaintance with you and Stephen was most enriching, spiritually and musically, and will remain a fond memory always. Stephen had a profound understanding and love of the Scriptures, and many of us have profited much from his insight. Bill and I so regret we did not more actively pursue another "coffee date" at McDonald's, after life took us in different directions. What a blessing to know that brothers and sisters in Christ are never forever parted.

~ Joan Robinson

Stephen was a great friend to me and to the Ark Aid Street Mission. His counsel and help were invaluable. The descriptions of him as generous, wise and giving were exactly our experience. He loved and was loved. An example to all. May we all be comforted knowing he is resting with his Saviour, who he loved and served.

~ Douglas Whitelaw

Joyce and family, our sincerest condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. The HOPE Unit from CAMH

Ruth . Joseph & Joyce and family, I am so sorry to hear about Stephen. My sincere sympathies to you all. My memories of Stephen include a great sense of humor, kindness, a great chef and you could see how much he loved and adored you. Know that I am thinking of you at this difficult time and your family.

~ Mary Lou Gough

Ruth, Joyce, and Joseph, my deepest condolences go out to you all. Stephen was always full of smiles and encouragement all the years I have known him. His smile was the among the first I received when I joined the Asian Christian Fellowship back at Western, and he often had the men over at his place for a home cooked meal. I will always remember Stephen driving 6 of us to North Carolina for a short term mission trip. He loved telling stories so much that he often swerved the car continuously and never looked at the road. In fact we were pulled over for going 40km/h over the limit, but his smile was likely the reason we were waived. I will miss him dearly.

~ Jesse Wong

Our hearts go out to Ruth and her family at this time of loss of a beloved husband and father. May Stephen rest in peace, and love and fond memories of him continue to strengthen and bond the family.

~ Anne and Hon Lau HO

I don't know where to begin. Stephen and his family have known my family for years and has always been like family to us. I remember his contagious laughter and his bright smile. He was such a selfless, generous individual who have such genuine concern and care for others. He was so kind, warm and wonderful mentor. My heart breaks that someone we loved had to depart so suddenly and so soon. My thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with you, Ruth, Joyce, Joesph. May he Rest In Peace and forever live in our hearts and memories.

~ Jasmine Long

Dear Ruth, Joseph, Joyce and family, although it's been a long time since we've seen you, our hearts were deeply saddened upon the news of our beloved brother Stephen's passing. He has been a great teacher/mentor/leader for both of us. We will always remember Stephen for his kindness and generosity in opening and welcoming us into his home. The time that he has invested in our lives will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Ruth, and your family in this difficult time. Leslie and Sipa

~ Leslie Ip and Sipa Chansavang

Renee and I met Stephen and Ruth when Joe and Krista bought their home next to ours and we were to be neighbours 2 years ago. Krista was expecting Nora so Stephen and Ruth travelled to Calgary to help with the move-in. Stephen organized painting and carpet installation while Ruth helped Krista take care of Luke and Elly. The snoopy neighbours, me and Renee, were greeted with wonderful warmth and lots of smiles. Renee and I felt instant friendship with Stephen and Ruth, and of course with Joe and Krista, Luke and Elly, soon-to-be Nora, and Krista's wonderful family too!! When we learned a few months ago that Stephen was very ill we prayed for our 'new' friend, hoping we would see Stephen and Ruth return to Calgary for a long visit. Evidently our Lord had other plans for Stephen and He promoted this wonderful man to Heaven. As Jesus Himself wept for Lazarus we are all permitted to weep for Stephen's passing, while we hold Faith that he rests with the Lord. In Christian friendship!!

~ Ralph McDowell and Renee McCool, Calgary

Our deepest sympathy to Ruth, Joseph, Joyce and family, may you be comforted knowing that Stephen had touched and left imprints on many with his sincerity, kindness and generosity , his passing has saddened those who know him. He will always be remembered with much fondness and affection, thinking of you all with love during this difficult time. Irene and Bob

~ Irene Young

On behalf of my sister Frances and my brother Albert, I would like to express our sincerest condolences to Ruth and the children. While Stephen is now in Heaven, his presence will definitely be missed on this Earth. I always remember Stephen's exceptional kindness, especially his showing us around town on our visit to London with my father a number of years back. In addition to his kindness, I was most impressed by his aquarium in the living room and his landscaping around the house...... I have a note for Ruth: please don't forget to take care of yourself in this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless.

~ Samuel Ng

Dear Ruth, Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. May your fond memories of Stephen bring you comfort and strength during this difficult time of your life. We will pray for him as he prayed for us. May God give him eternal rest.

~ Peter and Joyce Li

My deepest condolences to you Ruth and to your family. Almost 30 years ago, Stephen and Ruth mentored, taught, fed and invested their lives in a group of young, university Christian students including me. Through God's leading and the power of prayer, the Asian Christian Fellowship at Western was formed. Brother Stephen, your Christ-like love, humility, and generosity will continue to be remembered. You once taught a lesson about the importance of resting in Christ. May you now rest peacefully as you receive everlasting life. Until we see each other again.

~ Andrew Lam

Dear Ruth, our deepest condolences from Germany. Stephen was part of a mental health team to Heqing, China, and caught the attention of crowds of students through his unconventional and youthful sharing. When in 2007 MSI granted me the opportunity to visit Canada, I had the chance to stay at your home one night and share my China stories. It was a gift of God to have know your husband. May the Lord give you strength and courage for the coming months of grief. The Lord is your strength!

~ Eckehard Scharfschwerdt

To our respected and beloved Stephen, For the past 30 years you have been bringing inspirations, positivism and much needed grace to our daily living and core values. Our very first encountered back in the late 80's we were already touched by your genuine and sincerity to help in whatever ways you could. You are naturally gifted in relationship building that has brought forward a well balanced Christian values and humanity. With great support from Ruth, your care and love to your family are phenomenal and the outcome is a solid next generation bearing your legacy of accommodation, passionate about what you do and do well, most of all God fearing and loving. Even though we are deeply saddened by your departure but your natural smile, words of advice, creative hobbies and interest will forever remain in our fond memories. You have been a blessing to many and your spirit will live on. Friends forever and in Christ, Siu Hoi and Jessica.

~ Siu Hoi and Jessica Yeung

My prayers go out to you and your family during these difficult days. I had the privilege of knowing Stephen during our CREST studies and was touched by his warmth, humor and love for God. I pray that God will surround you with His strong arms and give you strength.

~ Barry Slauenwhite

Uncle Stephen was a generous man who was always willing to extend a helping hand. I personally benefited from his kindness and mentorship every time he came to visit in Calgary. He will surely be missed. My sincere condolences Auntie Ruth and the Cheng family.

~ Antony Chan

Stephen had been a faithful servant of our Lord who had chosen to spend an immensely large portion of his valuable time caring for his brothers and sisters in Christ. He saw Harry through the most difficult time of his life as a prayer partner, mentor and trusted friend. Harry still remember Stephen came to visit him almost every day while he was struggling for his life in the hospital, twenty-one years ago. He has been very dear to us and we all miss him very much. His gentle smiling face and fatherly personality will remain in our memory forever. Our family have lost a spiritual big brother and mentor in Christ. Ruth, Joseph and Joyce, our deepest condolences to you, and we will keep on praying that our God will continue to comfort you and grant peace even at this very difficult time.

~ Harry Leung and family

Dear Ruth, my wife Esther and my deepest condolences to you and your family. It was such a blessing to know Stephen. He was a very interesting person, quite unconventional in the way he used to think about things. I like this uniqueness. He was compassionate, gentle and friendly. He liked to listen and he was one of very few friends of mine in whom I could confide. We had so much to share particularly after he became a Christian. His personal qualities, training and experience in psychiatry have equipped him to help many needy people both in UK and in Canada. Last but not least, he has led many lost souls to find God. I miss him very very much.

~ Matthew Tong

Stephen was a caring , capable and organized man and it was both a pleasure and an honour to have worked with him . A true gentleman, he radiated happiness and tranquility, even in his texts in recent months

~ Charles Chamberlaine

My condolences to the Cheng family for the loss of a man of God here on earth. May the comfort of the Holy Spirit rest in all of your hearts. Stephen came to TCAC and made an everlasting impact to the leaders. The Lord spoke through Him and used him for His glory to benefit the body of Christ here in Toronto. May Stephen be enjoying the beauty of Heaven and the warm embrace of our Father! Many blessings to you and your family Stephen, we know you are with Him now :)

~ Sam Lee

We were blessed to know Stephen and the rest of his family when they were living in Scarborough, Ontario in the late 1980s. We were often invited to go over to their home with our kids, and Stephen always had that warm and welcoming smile on his face. Stephen was a man of generosity and hospitality who lived and walked his Christian faith. In him we saw the fruit of the Holy Spirit in action. Now that Stephen has been taken to be with the Lord, while we all feel the sadness and loss, we trust the comfort, peace and strength from God be with Ruth and the rest of the family all the more during this very special time. Our heartfelt condolences to Ruth and the rest of the family!

~ Tat & Yvonne Szeto

I am at a lost for words to describe uncle Stephen's impact on my life. He was a man of God that lived such an exemplary life whether it be in his professional life or family life. Especially for his services to countless students at ACF where I was blessed with his presence for many years. You will be remembered and sorely missed. I am also glad to have him join the cloud of witnesses with God that are watching us run this race here on earth and by God's grace to finish well like uncle Stephen did.

~ Lei Yang

I am so sorry for your loss! I met Stephen about 10 years ago when I was doing an observership in Windsor. He made that experience an even better one! He also opened his home in London to my now husband and I and ensured we did not spend that Christmas alone. He was responsible for my seeing my first (and last) live ice hockey game. He had a huge heart and was a blessed man! May he rest now in eternal peace and may you, his family, find the strength to endure this most difficult time!

~ Rashida Brown-Clarke

It was a blessing to get to know Stephen and Ruth, Joseph and Joyce almost 30 years ago. All these years, although we lived in a different city, we were touched by his genuine friendship, brotherly fellowship and wise counsel every time we met. Fast forward to today, our children have studied at Western for two years and were much blessed by Stephen through his ministry at ACF. Stephen's life is a life well lived because God used him as a channel of blessings to many. Stephen, you will always be remembered in our heart. See you one day at our Heavenly Father's home.

~ Ivan and Elim Yeung

Dear Ruth and Family Stephen was a true friend, leader and follower of Jesus. His wisdom and depth of spiritual insight was so life giving to all of us. He served as a faithful elder and church leader. This is a lost to you and to the family of Christ. May the Lord strengthen and encourage you.

~ Terry Sanderson

Joyce and family, I am very sorry to hear your dear father's passing. My sincere condolences and sympathies to you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May the Mighty God be your strength, comfort and peace.

I am so sorry for your loss of a loving father, wise man and loyal friend. He followed what Christ has taught. We are blessed by him. He treat everyone like a good Samaritan. He has Mercy to everyone even stranger. We are in HK now. Sorry we cannot attend the celebration. Let us know is there anything we can do. Thank you for his help to my son, Elliott, while he's at Western. I will praise You Lord my God, Even in my brokenness I will praise You Lord I will praise You Lord my God, Even in my desperation I will praise You Lord And I can understand all that You allow I just can see the reason But my life is in Your hands and though I cannot see, I choose to Trust You Chorus Even when my heart is torn I will praise (trust) You Lord Even when I feel deserted I will praise You Lord Even in the darkest valley I will praise You Lord When my world is shattered and it seems all hope is gone Yet I will praise You Lord I will trust You Lord my God, Even in my loneliness I will trust You Lord I will trust You Lord my God, Even when I cannot hear you I will trust You Lord https://ca.search.yahoo.com/search?p=yet+i+will+praise&fr=ipad

~ Nelson n Josephine Lam

A man to whom much is owed, I knew Stephen as someone who gave selflessly, endlessly and indiscriminately. On this difficult day I pray for peace of mind knowing that if Stephen reaps only a fraction of what he sowed in this world, we cannot yet conceive how bountiful his must be in the next.

~ Joshua Long

Our deepest condolences to our sister, Ruth & family. Although we seldom communicated with Stephen, he was always felt in our heart - that is the best and most beautiful thing in the world.

~ Philip & Clare Chiu

Stephen was a selfless and righteous man. We were often the recipient of his kindness and counsel. He was a blessing to us and will remain in our hearts forever. You will be missed, our big brother.

~ Joel and Irene Ho

Dear Ruth and family, I am sorry for your loss. May you be comforted by the love of family and friends at this sad time. I am thinking of you and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

We are shocked to hear of Stephen's passing. We have known Stephen for over 30 years and we last saw him a year ago. Stephen is a man of faith. He tirelessly lives out his faith by loving and caring for others. May God grant comfort and peace to Ruth and family, knowing that Stephen is now in a place where there is no pain and suffering, and that we will see him one day.

~ Vincent and Agnes Ching

Dear Ruth, My deepest condolences to you for your loss. May your faith and the love of family and friends comfort you in this time of sorrow. God bless you!

~ Cynthrina lam

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Although I had only met Stephen once through mutual friend Harry Mark, it was though we had known each other much longer as fellow brothers in Christ. May we continue to fight the good fight that Stephen so passionately has done all his earthly life. Glory to God in the highest.

~ Garry Fong

Dear Stephen, May you be Rested In Peace. I am deeply saddened by such news. My prayers are with Stephen's Family. My condolences to Ruth and the rest of Stephen's Family. Stephen is my secondary schoolmate and our friend started in 1963. He played the leading role in a drama directed by me in Christmas 1965, the first drama of St Francis Xavier's School, Tsuen Wan, New Territories, Hong Kong with the script written by student, and the performance totally organised by the students themselves. Of course, with the help of the teacher. We were in London while Stephen was doing his sociology study. Stephen is very kind hearted, always willing to and in fact he did help a lot of the underprivileged people, in particular, children. Stephen, your good works will always be in our heart and be remembered for ever.

~ LAI Kam Wah

Dear Stephen, not just that I miss you. The leadership of TCAC also miss you. I still remember our conversation, our dinner together. Blessings.
