Sergeant Paul Michael Thompson

August 12, 2024

After an almost decade long battle with cancer, Paul passed away at Victoria Hospital, London, on Monday, August 12, 2024, in his 40th year. Beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and Military Combat Engineer and Combat Diver, Paul was an incredible man who enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog Mudd, working on cars, being active, and caring for others. Survived by his wife Stephanie Thompson (nee Howlett) of 5.5 years. Dedicated father of Courtney and Ethan. Dear son of Sue Raeside (Dave) and Michael Thompson and son-in-law of Carol Jackson and Brian Howlett (Suzann).  Loving brother of Mark Thompson (Simran), step-brother of Matt and Chris Raeside and brother-in-law of Craig Howlett (Adele Coughlin).  Caring Uncle to Ryan and Jesse Thompson and Findlay and Molly Howlett. Cherished nephew of aunts and uncles in England.

Paul joined the Canadian Army Forces in 2012 and worked as a Combat Engineer and Combat Diver for 1CER based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Throughout his career, Paul inspired many of his colleagues through his strong work ethic, integrity, witty humour and positive attitude. He was deployed to Iraq in 2019, serving as a Force Protection Commander and earned several honours following the completion of advancement courses, including being the top candidate in his Sergeant course in Gagetown, New Brunswick in 2021. Outside of the Military, Paul loved watching his children explore and learn new things, working on home projects, checking out local events and catching up with friends. Paul is fondly remembered by family, friends and colleagues alike as genuine, trustworthy, caring and always willing to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

The funeral service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with visitation one-hour prior at 9 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery, London. Love and Pride crosses Oceans. Paul’s memory will always be cherished by his family in England and he will remain our ‘Super Man’. Steph, you and Paul will always have our greatest admiration. What a team. With love from us all.

~ Aunt San and Uncle John

Paul was an incredibly brave and motivated person. At times when most people would have stayed home to recuperate, he chose to continue coming to work to contribute to 1 CER. I remember him going to the gym early every day to do his own work out, then doing Troop physical training with the rest of us. I was amazed by his strength of character and I know he inspired everyone around him.

~ Adrian McNeely

Stephanie and Family, Sorry for your loss. Paul will be deeply missed at 1 CER, but his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire us all.

Stephanie and Family, Thoughts and care from your old workmates in Edmonton, I'm so sorry to hear this and sending love and support to add to all the family and friends that are with you.

Paul was one of those guys who made an immediate impact on whomever he met. How he lived his life was an inspiration and I will never forget the day he told me he was going to be a dad and how much that meant to him. Paul spoke very highly of his kids and how much he enjoyed seeing them grow. I will always cherish our memories and conversations. A memory that always makes me smile was his prized tempur-pedic mattress, Paul would always rave to me how good this mattress was and would give me updates in person and over text on "how good of a sleep" he was getting on this thing, following up with pictures of his mattress, trying to convince me to purchase one for myself. I never met someone so heavily invested into a mattress, I'm sure he would have been a great salesman for Sleep Country. Paul you will be missed, but your legacy will live on with those who loved you. To Stephanie, Courtney, Ethan and family of Paul; my heartfelt condolences for your loss.
