Rupert Norbert Louis
June 21, 2024
Peacefully at the McCormick Home, London, Ontario, on Friday, June 21, 2024, at the age of 94. Beloved husband the late Lucille. Loving father of Nigel Louis (Susan), and Nicole Easton (the late Rob), proud grandfather of Matthew, Stephen, Michelle, Taylor, Grace, Henry, and Lucie Anne, and also great-grandfather of Dante. Predeceased by his sister Stephanie Louis and brother Selwyn Louis.
Rupert was born in North Oropouche, Trinidad, West Indies, on December 10, 1929, and was the second oldest of seven siblings. His father Stephen Louis was a school headmaster and Rupert followed in his footsteps and became a teacher.
In 1964, Rupert moved to Canada with his wife Lucille as teachers and quickly secured jobs with the Toronto Separate School Board. Rupert taught intermediate grades in elementary schools and towards the end of his career in Special Education. While working full-time, he and
his wife attained undergraduate degrees from York University. His interest in Special Education motivated Rupert to achieve his Master of Education from the University of Niagara. During his time at the board, Rupert contributed to the school board curriculum for the Child of
the Universe, Getting to Know Me series titled “The West Indies”, which formed the basis for teacher resources for West Indian studies.
Following his retirement from teaching, Rupert and Lucille moved to London, Ontario.
Rupert enjoyed his retirement years doing the things he loved. He travelled across Canada, spent time at his house in Port Charlotte, Florida, visited family in Houston, Miami, Montreal and Trinidad, and chased cricket matches throughout the Caribbean. Rupert especially loved cruises and had been on at least 10 of them; Alaska is the place he listed as his favourite.
Always up for a new experience, Rupert tried golf and taught himself to play the guitar. He volunteered with the Cancer Society, driving people to their appointments and with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He loved attending concerts at Centennial Hall, plays at the Grand Theatre and was a member of the London Jazz Society. Dad had a beautiful smile that shone often. A lover of music, his tastes were wide and varied, from Country to Calypso and everything in between. His singing will be missed by the staff and residents at the McCormick Home.
There was nothing that brought Rupert more joy than his grandchildren, who he tirelessly encouraged to pursue their interests and be the best versions of themselves. Dad’s final message to us all are three of his favourite sayings: “Try to be who you are always.” “Have the courage of your conviction.” “Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you.”
A private family service will be held for Rupert at a later date, with inurnment to follow at St. Peter’s Holy Family Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
