Ronald Edward Hansen

February 24, 2025

Ronald Edward Hansen, affectionately known as Ron, was born on June 13, 1932, in Saskatchewan and peacefully departed this world on February 24, 2025, surrounded by love. As the second oldest sibling of six, Ron knew the value of family and lived the phrase “chosen family” to the fullest, creating bonds that transcended bloodlines.

He is survived by his siblings Roy and Vina, and leaves behind a family he built with love and care, including Sam & Linda, Randy & Mona, and Dick & Debbie. Ron’s life was a testament to the power of kindness and big-heartedness.

At nineteen, Ron joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he soared to the rank of Flight Lieutenant over 16 remarkable years, which included training in radar systems. It was in 1958, while curling, that he met the love of his life, Ann. Together, they founded their home in Seaforth from 1960 to 1984 before relocating to London. Ron graduated from Ottawa University in 1962 while serving in the Air Force.

Ron was a pioneering spirit, becoming one of the founding professors at Fanshawe College in 1967, where he inspired countless minds in math, physics, and computer science (“the good stuff”).  Well beyond the doors of Fanshawe, Ron seemed to be a teacher to every young person he ever met. They will remember him not just for his sharp intellect, but for his unwavering care, encouragement, and patience – whether they wanted to learn or not.

Ron was more than an educator; he was a beacon of positivity and a champion of social justice issues way ahead of his time. He was a passionate and enthusiastic lover of all things nature, his trees, and the great outdoors. The only thing he consumed with more delight than good food was great books. His cheerful nature and lifelong commitment to learning made him a delight to spend time with.

In his later years, Ron extended his family to include his beloved caregivers, supporting and inspiring them to build their best lives in Canada. He is deeply missed by Phoebe, Vishel, Ruthann, Gloria, Nezel, Aldwin, Catherine, Emmalyn, Tiny, and many more, who were changed by his generosity and wisdom as they provided him with extraordinary care.

Ron’s positive spirit and radiant love will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His commitment to making a difference left a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of many. He made the world a brighter place, and his legacy of kindness, charity, and community will live on in those he left behind.

A memorial service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.  For those unable to attend the service a livestream will be available.

Ron and Ann were my neighbours growing up. We were always invited to come over for dinners and chats in their beautiful home. My mom was a single mother and Ron was often teaching my brother how to do this and that. I was a failure at math, and Ron graciously offered to try to get me through high school math, which was like putting a square peg in a round hole. If it was not for Ron, I do not know where I would be. A more patient man I have never met. Ron shared a birthday with my sister and another neighbour. We often had a neighbourhood party to celebrate. Ron and Ann were literally the special grandparents to every family in the neighbourhood. Everyone loved them. I had the opportunity a few years back to write back and forth through Facebook to Ron, and tell him what a great person he was. I am sad for his passing, but happy he will be reunited with the love of his life, Ann.
