Rita Margaret Malone (née McGee)

February 3, 2023

At peace with God on Friday, February 3, 2023, in her 99th year in London, Ontario. Rita was pre-deceased by her dear husband and friend of 62 years, Joe; her infant son, Joseph; parents Margaret and John; and brothers, Jim, Frank and Bob. Survived by brothers John and Gerry. Rita was an amazing mother to Mary (Oliver Whitehead), Kathleen (Derek Montpetit), Brian (Betty Matthews), Joanne (Jonathan Creaghan) and Donna (Jamie Loucks). Best grandmother ever to Jonathan, Beth (Mark Sanders), Ian (Taralyn Parr), Katharine (Bryan Kee), Anne, Matt, Claire, Spencer (Jenn Reyla), Connor, Aidan, Caitlin and great-grandmother to Mazima.

Rita was born in Montreal and grew up in the Irish community with her parents and five brothers. After 49 years in Quebec, Rita and Joe moved to London and started a new chapter that would span another 49 years. After raising her five children, Rita fulfilled a long held ambition to attend university. In 1994, at age 70, she graduated from UWO with a BA in History, surrounded by her proud family. A lifelong learner, Rita and Joe enjoyed many trips in Canada and Europe with Elderhostel and the Friday lecture series for UWO alumni. Rita volunteered at Parkwood Hospital and CPRI. She was an avid bridge player, a good friend to so many and diligently followed the adventures and achievements of her grandchildren via email or Facetime. A lover of tennis and always a Habs fan, Joe and Rita are surely on the courts now.

Rita was a warm and caring woman with a joie de vivre who lived her life with true grace and inspired many. She will be missed, she will be cherished, and she will forever be in our hearts.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Divine Parish, 390 Base Line Road West, London on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London.

I am Gordon & Hermine Malone's daughter. Around every Christmas I would either call or email Rita. This year I was a little late and called in late Jan. but did not hear back. I found that strange. Well we always caught up and I will miss her dearly. Sincere sympathies from the Malone family.

~ Terry Malone

We knew Rita (and Joe) as good friends of our parents who were always interested in our similarly large family and its activities. She was a kind, thoughtful person who we remember with affection.
