We have lost one of the founding fathers of Interventional Radiology in Canada, as well as a friend and mentor. My most sincere condolences to Chris and family.
Dr. Rankin was a great teacher and role model. He was a very practical, caring doctor, who always kept patient welfare paramount. I learned countless things from, and enjoyed his company and teaching always. I still think of him every time I do a PICC, as he patiently taught me how to do them. A great loss indeed. May he rest in peace.
I extend my deepest sympathies to Mrs Rankin, her daughters and son on their recent loss. As a Radiology Resident starting at University Hospital in 1980 I had greatly benefitted professionally from Dr Rankin's wisdom, skill, guidance and kindness for 2 years before having the good fortune to meet you all in July 1982 ( i.e. the time your backyard pool was being installed!) Because Dr Rankin was quiet and reserved about his personal life, I felt privileged to be afforded the unique opportunity to see a different facet of this very private man. It was indeed quite a revelation. I marvelled at how lucky Dr Rankin was to have such a great family ...... he loved you all so very much. A supremely skilled interventional radiologist, a respected and revered teacher with numerous awards and achievements in academic and administrative radiology all attest to his intellect. Dr Rankin's selfless service and kindness which touched so many came from his caring heart, so filled with love. May you take comfort in the memories of this wonderful man.
I have pondered since learning the news of Dick. What to say at a time like this . you reflect on the many great times you had, those very special moments. In reading the book of condolences you realise just how brilliant he was, but in the 30 years of times together I never once heard him talk about his accomplishments but rather he would talk of his daughters and his son, what they had accomplished and where they were going in their lives, How proud he was of them. Dick has left a footprint , not just of his career but also as a great husband, Father, Grandfather and for my wife and I a man who was respected , admired and the kindest man we have ever met. Dick it was an incredible privilege to have shared time with you and not many men will be able to leave the foot print that you have left. Annemarie And Ron
My heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Rankin and family. I worked in the department for many years as a secretary and admired his skilled reports and interactions with patients and colleagues.
I recall with fondness, my many visits to the radiology department seeking advice about difficult clinical cases, and it seemed that the best options were always suggested by Dick's thoughtful and caring approach. My sincerest condolences.
Please accept my deepest condolenses. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Rankin over the past many years. He was someone who always displayed tremendous leadership, dedication and expertise. He will be greatly missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to the Rankin family during this very difficult time.
Dick was a respected colleague, friend and mentor. His work ethic was impeccable, his dry sense of humour was always appreciated, and he was always ready to assist in the angio suite. He will be sorely missed by all of us in Radiology. My deepest sympathies to Chris and family.
My deepest condolences to family and friends of Dr. Rankin. I met Dr. Rankin only once at the Canadian Association of Radiologists conference in 2011; what a wonderful person! I knew him before only from reading his research on carotid plaque imaging. Meeting the person behind the academic career was inspiring for me, both as a graduate student and now, as a radiology resident, because not only was he an exemplary doctor, but a sincere, approachable, and enthusiastic person.
I wish to express my heartfelt condolences. My thought and prays for peace and strength with all that grieve their loss. No evil can happen to good man, either in life or after death.
He was an amazing Grandpa.... I love you Grandpa.

As a Medical Leader and Chief, Dick skillfully walked the line between Medicine and Management. He respected and appreciated the differences and challenges we all face in healthcare. This skill made him a tremendously effective leader. We have all lost a dear friend and colleague this week.
I was most saddened at the news of Dr Rankin's passing and wish to pass on my prayers and thoughts to his family at this most difficult time. Dick was an inspiration and mentor for myself and many of my colleagues and the reason why so many of us chose radiology as our specialty. It was his passion and skill not only as radiologist and interventionalist but as a caregiver, patient advocate, teacher, leader and friend for which he will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. Walt Romano -Calgary
Chris, Sarah, Becky and Robert, You are in our thoughts, and we are so saddened by your loss. I knew Dick as the #1 volunteer during all those horse shows, and for everything that he did to support his family and share in your activities.
We are sending you our deepest sympathies and are very sorry to hear about your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.
Many of us trained in London and owe much to Dick Rankin for our education. He also took excellent care of our patients. He was a thoughtful colleague and friend. He will be missed at so many levels. I will also personally miss our conversations about technology and Apple - thinking about these chats has made me smile. Thank you Dick.
Our condolences to Mrs Rankin and all Dick's family. I would like you to know that Dick was one of the most thoughtful doctors that I have known. He was a pioneer who developed many of the interventional radiological services that are available today. I learned a lot from him during fellowship training and later in practice with him as a colleague. We managed many very difficult situations for patients in trouble who Dick steered back to health. We will all miss Dick very much.
Christine, Miriam and I were very sorry to hear of Richard's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I too had the pleasure of being mentored by Dr. Rankin during my radiology residency. Despite his professional titles and achievements, he immediately made me feel welcome and at ease. I enjoyed working with him tremendously. He was a great mentor, teacher and friend. He instilled confidence in us all. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. S. Jackman St. John's, NL
I had the privilege of training under Dr. Rankin. I remember being intimidated by his tremendous skill and knowledge at first, but it didn't take long for his kind and generous soul to quell my nerves. He taught me that we should always think of our patients first, provide the best care possible, and treat everyone with kindness and respect. I admired and respected him immensely, and I will always carry his teachings with me. I feel a great sense of loss and I send my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all of his family and friends, who must be heartbroken. Please know that he will always be remembered because he touched so many lives in so many ways.
His sphere of influence is immeasurable. We are all fortunate to be within it. Echoes of the quiet giant's footsteps will carry on.
So sorry to hear the sad news. Know that we are thinking of you.
Having worked with Dick for years in the CAR he has always been to me an exampe of selfless contribution. He always seemed to work out of the limelight, never needing that validation. My sincere regrets to his family
The radiology and Interventional Radiology community and across Canada are devastated. Dr. Rankin was an inspiration to many, many, many trainees and did incredible work for so many patients with an unparalleled skill. He always was and will continue to be a true legend. My deepest condole nces. He will be missed greatly.
Dr. Rankin's life made such a difference in so many ways. We are all richer for having him share his advice, counsel and genuine caring for others. May all of his family, colleagues and staff who worked so closely with him over the years, find peace in the days to come.
I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Dr. Rankin's family. I worked with Dick over several decades on various committees of the Canadian Association of Radiologists. He was clear-headed and always willing to volunteer his time. We will all miss him. Ian Hammond (Ottawa)
Sadly missed along life's way, quietly remembered every day... No longer in our life to share, but in our hearts, you're always there!!
On behalf of our entire department, clinical and academic, we all feel the deep loss of having one of our finest clinical radiologist whose skillful hands have healed many, whose sharp mind has challenged our profession, and whose heart has always been the centre of his being. We will all miss him each of us in our own way as we all knew him in his multitude of roles professionally. As a teacher, clinician, leader and most of all mentor, Dr. Richard Rankin, Dick , will be forever remembered by many individuals across Canada. I have known him all of my professional life since 1986 and have cherished his sage counsel always, I will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace, our deepest condolences to Chris and family. Dr. Andrea Lum Chair, Department of Medical Imaging, Chief Diagnostic Radiology Western University, London Ontario
I am very sorry for your loss. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
I am so very sorry to hear of Dick's passing. During my 10 years at UH, he was a colleague, a mentor and a friend. Dick led by example. He found solutions where others saw only problems and he navigated through controversy to find compromise. His clinical acumen and careful hands improved the lives of many patients. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time. Lisa Thain, Richmond Hill.
I was very fortunate to work with Dick as Department Chair of Radiology for several years when I was Dean of Medicine & Dentistry at Western. Nothing fazed Dick: even when faced with the most contentious problems, he would smile, shrug, and press on. He was committed to the advancement of teaching and research in the department, and he provided wise advice to me. I am grateful to have known him. I offer my deep sympathy to his family.
Becky we are so sorry for you and your family's loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Our deepest sympathies. Sherry Lynn and Regan Hallam
It is with great sadness that I learnt the news of Dr Rankin. Please accept my condolence. I hope you find comfort in the fact that Dr Rankin touched the lives of so many individuals- patients, fellow care givers, residents, fellows and students. In my case he was a great teacher ,mentor, role model and a sage advisor,as an interventionalist- a technical master to emulate. My thoughts are with you Roman Kozak
I only worked with Dr. Rankin for a short period of time....but the impression he made on me will last a life time. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
Chris, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this most difficult time. Over the years, Dr Rankin was a big part of our imaging family. His passing has truly left a void that cannot be filled. With deepest sympathy
What a shock! So very sorry to hear this news Chris. My sincere condolences to you and the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Chris, just remember that“Like the ripples in a pond, the work of one man can spread out and touch the lives of so many others.” and he did just that. Will miss him greatly. As we all will.
Dr. Rankin was a role model for us all. He taught me to stand up for things that are important, and to keep things simple when they don't need to be complicated. I am fortunate to have had him as a mentor. We are all better for having known him.
your spirit will be with me on every trail my friend
I am so saddened by your loss. A wonderful neighbour and a wonderful man. He will be missed.
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. Thinking of you all, XX
I am indeed saddened by Dick's passing. He was a great physician, teacher and colleague. He worked closely with the surgical teams and we shared in many clinical successes. He was a consummate professional and I appreciated his frankness and sincerity. May you rest in peace Dick.
Dick will be missed so incredibly by our family most particularly my parents, Garry and Laura. They could always count on Chris and Dick to be steadfast and supportive life-long friends and co-captains of the ship of sometimes rocky life. I am thoroughly impressed though not at all surprised by all the wonderful testaments to Dick's professional life on these pages, but let me be the first to say backyard birds such as chickadees, finches and sparrows have always - and will always - make me think of Dick. Just this past Summer, he was able to answer, via my parents, my 6 year old son's question about a chickadee breed. My little bird-watcher in the making has been touched, too. *chick-a-dee-dee*
Dick affected the lives of countless people. He had vision, clarity, and a deep respect for people. What an example! He will be missed. With sincere sympathy...
