Richard (Dick) Patterson Armstrong

November 20, 2013

ARMSTRONG, Richard (Dick) Patterson – Passed away peacefully at Highview Residences, London, with his family at his side on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013.  He is survived by his beloved and cherished wife of 60 years and dear friend of 75 years, Marian, devoted daughters Janet and Linda and very special sons-in-law Greg Carr and Mark Enns.  Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will miss Dick’s special joi de vivre.   Predeceased by his sister Mary Frankish (2010).  Dick was born on May 10, 1929 in New Liskeard, Ontario.   His heart will forever remain at the family cottage where he would return often to his roots.  He will be interred at Pioneer Cemetery, Temiskaming Shores in the spring 2014.  He obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1952 and started a long and very successful career that took him from Quebec to Ontario and Michigan.  He was President & CEO of three diverse companies; Westclox Canada, Baker Perkins (Canada and US) and Hayward Pool Products Canada.

He supported local charities such as United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Sisters of St. Joseph (Peterborough) through direct involvement and served on several boards during his working career, most notably Trent University Board of Governors.   A memorial service will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland North, London, on Sunday, November 24th, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with visitation one hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of London or Highview Residences. The family would like to thank Dr. John Jordan for his compassion. We would also like to thank the ‘family’ at Highview for their exceptional care.  His final home was filled with love, care and compassion. For this, his family will be forever grateful.  Online condolences may be made at >www.westviewfuneralchapel.com

To: Marion and family We (Lynn, Lori and Paul Pettersone) read with sadness the obituary of Dick and wanted to say how very sorry we were to learn of his passing. As children, at the time, we remember Dick as a very kind and gentle man. My Father and Mother, now both deceased, spoke of Dick with much respect and fondness. I trust he is now at peace and his memory will live on.

I thank all of you for your lovely condolences of dad. I miss him everyday. It has been two years since we said goodbye yet it feels like just yesterday. He was the most amasing father and husband. Oh! How lucky we all were to know and love him.

We are so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I have many happy memories of sunny days spent at the point with Linda and the Armstrongs. "Mr. Armstrong" always made us laugh and feel so welcome at your cottage. I remember him quizzing me each summer about the "goings on" along Mary Street and sharing stories of the "early days" - that, and him performing tricks and telling us jokes. We all knew that Mr. Armstrong was a very special guy. This is a huge loss for your family and many friends. With deepest sympathies to Mrs. Armstrong, Janet, Greg, Linda and Mark. Best wishes.

~ Lynn Buckham

Aunt Marion, Janet & Greg, Linda & Mark: We were saddened to hear the news of Uncle Dick's passing. He was a great story-teller, a jokester and a charismatic presence at the cottage every summer. He will always have a special place in our hearts and memories -- how lucky we were to know him. Wishing you peace at this difficult time.

~ Julia Hall and Robbie Patterson

It saddened us greatly to learn that Dick is no longer with us. We met Dick and Marion late in life as neighbours, but very quickly became friends and bridge partners. We miss the special evenings of gourmet dining and bridge that we so often shared. Dick's quick and sharp wit coupled with Marion's gracious manner made for delightful gatherings that we shall never forget. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his entire family but especially to Marion, the love of Dick's life, who is undoubtedly going through a very difficult time.

Dear Marian, Janet, Linda and families. We are very saddened to hear the news of Dick's passing and our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Memories are wonderful and the Harrigan family will always remember with great fondness the special friendship and good times that our families shared.

~ Leslie (Harrigan) Mather

To Marion and family. I was sorry to hear the news about Dick but he has gone to a better place with all those friends who are waiting for his charm and sense of humour around the bridge table. It is not that often that neighbours become such long term friends but Cliff and Mary Cadd were ver fortunate that your paths crossed in Peterborough so many years ago. My thoughts are with you all and I will be thinking of you all on Sunday when you say farewell to Dick. He has left behind a lot of great memories for the family to share. Dick and his old friend Serge Pellegrini are probably catching up on things already. May Dick rest in Peace!

Dear Marian, Janet, Linda, Greg and Mark our deepest condolences during this time of sorrow. We have been friends with your Dad and Mom since 1985 when Dick worked at Hayward. We have great memories of visits to the cottage and shared vacations not to mention the amazing stories (your Dad's mostly -- he was an amazing story teller). He will be truly missed, but we will treasure the memories we shared.
