Nancy Hutchinson (née Cudmore)

December 12, 2023

With family at her side, Nancy Hutchinson of London passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late Jim Hutchinson for 54 years, cherished mother of Martha Bere (George) and proud grandmother of Jason and Katie Bere. Predeceased by parents, Frances and Martha Cudmore (née Reid).

Nancy was a gifted teacher of young children. For most of her 36-year career, she taught Kindergarten at different London elementary schools including Broughdale, St. Georges and Clara Brenton. She shared her musical and dramatic talents by directing choirs and school shows. As a young woman, Nancy was very involved in church life at Knox Presbyterian in Wallaceburg, where she sang in the choir and led various youth groups. In London, she was also an active member at First-St. Andrews United Church, where many of her beautiful hand-made banners are still displayed.

Nancy and Jim were skilled bridge players, members of the Royal Canadian Scottish Country Dance Society demonstration team and great supporters of the Arts in Ontario. They also enjoyed many wonderful travels around the globe together. Nancy was happiest when doing for others — cooking, sewing, knitting, and crochet were her labours of love that she gave generously.

Sincere thanks to the staff at Chartwell Riverside and Dr. MacLean for their support and care in her final days. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. Private interment will take place at a later date.

To the Family of Nancy Hutchinson, Our daughter, Rachel Zimmerman Brachman, was fortunate to have had Nancy as her kindergarten teacher at St. George’s Public School in 1977. We are grateful for Nancy setting her on a lifelong path of loving learning. Rachel went on to become a young inventor, and she currently works at NASA, thanks to the great start Mrs. Hutchinson provided for her. As an aside, we remember how the children put on The Wizard of Oz play, where they combined reading, acting, and math skills in the process. Nancy truly made a difference in our daughter’s life and most certainly hundreds of other young lives throughout her 36 years as a teacher. Please accept our belated thanks for her impact on Rachel and so many others. -- Linda and Walter Zimmerman (and Rachel)

May I express my sincerest condolences to Nancy's family upon hearing the sad news of her recent passing. I had the privilege of having Nancy as my Grade 2 teacher at A. A. Wright Public School in Wallaceburg for the 1955-56 school year. I have always remembered her warm and engaging classroom style and her leadership, in both classroom events, as well as for whole-school undertakings such as Christmas parties. Nancy was an impactful teacher who has left a wonderful legacy.

I was sorry to read of the passing of your Mother Martha. I have never met you -but your Mom loved you and your family dearly. My mother Ruth Workman kept in touch with your parents. I met your Mom and Dad only once when I delivered some Cudmore information to them. They were very friendly and a nice couple. Tom my husband and I had a nice visit together with them.
