Maureen Pocock

January 6, 2014

With deep sadness we announce that Maureen Ellen Pocock (nee Quinn), passed away quickly and peacefully on Monday January 6th, 2014 at home in Delaware, Ontario. Maureen, in her 80th year, is pre-deceased by her husband of 47 years, Terrence H. Pocock, parents Grace and Sylvester Quinn and brother Brian Quinn. She will be greatly missed by her brother and sister, Gerald and Alanna Quinn, as well as her seven children and their families: Michael Pocock, Susan (and Philip) Roth, Tim (and Jennifer) Pocock, Gordon Pocock, Mary-Lynne Snedden (and Antin), Andrew Pocock (and Bree), and Jennifer (and Pete) Marriott. Her six grandchildren Mackenna, Austin and Baden Roth, Harper Snedden, and Cameron and Josh Pocock will all cherish their memories of Granny Mo. As a young woman, Maureen was a statuesque model with brilliant blue eyes and a stunning smile. Being athletic, she was on the basketball and cheer-leading teams at Catholic Central High School. She was an accomplished seamstress, creating many lovely gowns for herself, and beautifully crafted costumes and clothing for her siblings and children. Maureen graduated from the University of Western Ontario (Brescia College) in 1955. As a drum majorette and great charming beauty, she was known as their “Secret Weapon”. Terry was the love of her life and best friend whom she deeply missed since his passing in June 2002.  A highly intelligent woman and devoted wife, she supported and contributed to all of her husband’s endeavours, in both business and personal projects. Many will have fond memories of Maureen from the family’s life-long involvement with horses. She was ever present, proudly and with some fear for their safety, at the many equestrian events her children participated in. She was also a gracious host and a force behind the competitions that were held on the family farm. Later in life Maureen and Terry developed a keen interest in playing croquet and hosted the Canadian Championships on the farm that they loved. Many Jack Russell Terriers were constant companions that brought her much joy. Watching the gardens, trees and birds change throughout the seasons gave her immense pleasure and peace. Maureen was a truly generous and kind person who was a wonderful cook, a curious traveller and an avid reader with a sharp mind and quick wit. In her later years, she liked to be cozy in front of the fireplace, with her cat, daily crossword, Sudoku and a classic movie. The family extends a sincere thank you to Darlene Tuszinski for her care and support over the last fifteen years and for the compassion shown to Maureen by Dr. Catherine Walsh. All of Maureen’s family and friends will sincerely miss her grace, charm, and beauty. As per Maureen’s wishes, a private celebration of her life will be held with family and friends at a later date.

I am so sad to hear this news, however I will always remember great fun filled memories on the farm for much of my childhood with the Pocock's and in the "big house" and especially having a wonderful lunch with Maureen's homemade gazpacho that i had tried for the first time. She will be greatly missed.

To All of Terry and Maureen's Children------- I knew your parents through my late wife Mary Lou (Dettinger) Dubois. Mary Lou and Maureen were best of friends from Brescia College days onwards. Maureen was a bridesmaid in our wedding of 1956 and I was always impressed with her stunning beauty. For a while you were our neighbors on Windermere near Corley Drive. Reading of your mother's passing brought a nostalgic rush of pleasant memories many of which I'm sure you have as well Jack Dubois

Like many others, I will miss my "big sister" and send lots of love and condolences to the rest of the family and her friends. She lived quite a full life. I have nothing but gratitude and admiration for her. Alanna

Like many of you, we were privileged to spend some time amidst some of Maureen's family...Susan and Andrew in particular...and yes horses were involved. We entrusted our daughter Katie and her horses to their equestrian care where she spent her university years. We remember Maureen was always about, often violating her driving suspension (doctors orders) by taking runs into town on the golf cart...what a character. Our deepest condolences to the whole Pocock family. Pat, Mike and Katie Stephenson

It is with great sadness that I learned of Maureen's passing. As a young person I have many very fond memories of Maureen and Terry and all of the children Susan, Mike, Tim, Gordon, Mary and Andrew and Jennifer whom I 'grew up with' in the hunt field and at social gatherings almost always involving horses. Maureen and Terry were central to many of those events often being involved in either organizing or helping host. In those bygone days as well as more recently, I remember Maureen as a very gracious and friendly person always with a kind word and encouraging smile. She was hardworking but never seemed in a rush and took time to make sure that everyone was comfortable and felt welcome. My deepest sympathy to all of you and your families at this difficult time. It is my hope that you will cherish the many memories you have of Maureen. Thinking of you all.... Pam Sugden (and Kerry Boonstra)

I am very saddened by this news. What I remember most about Maureen is the beautiful smile she carried when she came to the farm for tomatoes and the great Mmmmm I can't wait to eat them when I get home! She was a very gracious, beautiful person and we will miss her. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all in this sad time. Cherish the many memories you have of Maureen; the absolute awesome lady that you all had the pleasure to learn from , love and be with. God bless you all.
