When I met Matt during my sister Andrea’s birthday weekend, I fell instantly in love with his sweet disposition. Since that weekend, Andrea and I raved about him as the best human ever. I went to school with Sarah and Mike, and am a close family friend to Sam. I know how truly important Matt was to everyone. I cannot put into words how deeply sorry and saddened I am by this loss. I am holding the DeCicco and Arcese family in my heart during this time, and am keeping Matt’s beautiful spirit in my thoughts and prayers.

The DeCicco family, Samantha and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Matt, I am so sorry for your loss. Matt was the type of person that everyone should strive to be. During my toughest times in our first year at McMaster he would always text me to hangout and bring me out of a hole. Not only was he an amazing person but an amazing athlete. From our battles against each other on the football field in high school, to our battles with each other playing for Junior Mustangs; his skills were unmatched. Your kindness will live on through the hearts of everyone you touched.

It was a pleasure to battle against Matty over the years. It was much easier once he became my teammate and I didn’t have to worry about his wicked hockey skills. Cheeks was loved by every single player in our locker room. Matt was smart, hardworking, thoughtful and one of the best athletes I have ever had the pleasure of watching and playing with. While in high school and on the football field, Matt was always one of the best players/athletes who was a leader and looked up to by many. When at McMaster and I was told that the program was recruiting Matt, I was ecstatic because not only were they getting a quality football player, but they were getting an even better person. Matt, you were a warrior, you persevered through injury where most would have walked away and proceeded to work harder than anyone else to overcome that. It is a true testament to Matt and how much of fierce competitor he was. Cheeks, you left a lasting impression wherever you went and I am proud to say I shared the field with you for all those years.
