Peacefully at home, just as the sun brightly began to shine in the afternoon, surrounded by his family’s love and wrapped in the arms of his children, on Tuesday, February 10th, 2015 and in his 47th year. Dearly loved husband of Lori and devoted dad to Benton and Tyler. A loving son to Ray and Alberta McNicol and brother to Tammi Shaw (Dwane), Jen Locker (Derek), and Brendan McNicol (Karen). Brother-in-law to Kelly Lewis, Jenny Lewis (Jonas De Jesus), and Mike Lewis (Rhonda Leonard). Survived by his nieces and nephews Ryan, Brittany, and Brayden Shaw, Kyrie and Trent Locker, Aubrey, Sierra, and Raegan McNicol, Kyle and Corey Lewis-Lescadres, Blake (great-niece Sophia) and Marc Lewis, and Evan, Sidney, and Drew Lewis. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and Gerry, Ruth, and Duane Lewis. Predeceased by Albert and Edith Plumb, Alvin and Ruby McNicol, Barb Lewis, and his beloved Misti and Lucia. He will be fondly missed by his dear friend Ted Ironside, his many TVDSB friends and colleagues, his neighbours, and huge extended circle of friends, including his buddy Murphy. Martyn fought his almost two year battle against head and neck cancer with incredible strength and determination and was valiantly admired by many for his tenacity and humour throughout his life and especially during his illness. The family would like to thank the VON Palliative and Chronic Care Teams (especially Lyndsey, Becky, Pauline, and Morgan), Drs. Gillis, Valiulis, Hamilton, Ernst, Shearer, Fung, and Yoo, incredible nurses Wendy, Lisbet, and Grace (who was always there to pick him up), special research team Anne, Al, and Craig, and the most incredible team of chemo front staff and nurses (too many to mention) for their professionalism and care. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Friday, February 20th, 2015 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation two hours prior. My sincere condolences to Lori, Benton, Tyler and the rest of Martyn's family. I enjoyed working with Martyn and appreciated his loyalty and commitment to public education and to the staff he worked with at Thames Valley. I recall the positive and 'can do' approach he brought to work every day. He will be missed.

Dear Lori, Benton and Tyler; I never knew Marty personally but I know a lot about him through my discussions with Lori. Dear Lori & Boys: I was so sad when Kim shared that Marty had passed. You always talked of him and the boys at work and all the daily things colleagues share with so much love and pride. You shared so many happy moments when you were together and so many wonderful days during all those years... To Lori McNicol: We have never met, but after much thought we felt that we wanted to convey our sympathy to you even though you don't know us. We were very moved when we read of your loss in the Free Press, as we lost our son-in-law last November at age 43, also from head and neck cancer. He also faced his 2-year journey with unimaginable strength and courage, and he never lost his sense of humour or ability to make sure that everyone he loved was at peace. Like you, our daughter (whose name is Laurie too) has two children, and they were always included in the journey which has so enabled them to accept the loss of their father. I feel from reading the notice in the paper that your children were very much included as well, and our prayer for each of you is that you hold onto the love and the wonderful memories you have to get you through this difficult time. We hope we aren't being intrusive but we are sending this with true caring and sympathy for your loss. We feel it deeply- heaven now has two incredible angels.
Martyn, you were simply the best. It was an honour and a privilege and so much fun to have worked with you. I will miss your wonderful smile.
