Maris Lynne Smith

Maris Lynne Smith passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023 at LHSC – Victoria Hospital, at the age of 84, due to Alzheimer’s disease, and finally from injuries incurred from a fall the week before her death. Survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Derek Smith; her daughter; Kelli Anne Quinn of Kitchener, ON; and three grandchildren: Nicola Urquhart of Kitchener, ON, Thom Urquhart of Vancouver, BC and Ivan Urquhart of Nelson, BC. Maris was predeceased by her parents Ian and Ethel (née Turner) McDonald and her brother, Keith.
The daughter of a banker, she was educated in various locations in Canada – Selkirk, MB, Winnipeg, MB, Duck Lake, SK, and Montreal, QC. Post-secondary education included business college in Toronto, as well as a school teaching certificate from Toronto Teachers College. Her career began as a dental assistant for some years in Toronto’s SickKids Children’s Hospital. After moving to Manitoba in 1971, she was employed by the Child Guidance Clinic of the Winnipeg School Division, ending her career in 1993 as Administrative Secretary to the Service Directors of the clinic. She accompanied Derek upon his transfer to Dublin, Ireland. In 2000, they settled in London, ON, following his retirement.
Her enjoyments included cross-country skiing, walking, collecting “miniatures” and dollhouse furnishings, quilting and frequent cruises.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Maris are asked to consider the McCormick Care Foundation – Dementia Services Priority Needs or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Maris and I worked almost nose-to-nose in our little space at CGC and she was a pleasure to work with. Wishing you, Kelli Anne and grandchildren comfort and peace in the days ahead and memories to hold in your heart.
