Leopoldino ‘Leo’ J.P., M.D. (December 6, 1941) Assis

August 7, 2019

On Wednesday, August 7, 2019, with his wife Sharon (née Bucholz) beside him, after a long series of illnesses, Leo passed away peacefully at home in his sleep. Leo will be kept alive in the hearts and minds of his wife Sharon, mother Valentina, brother Doug’s family Lourdes & William, sister Maria Eugenia Pareja’s family Waldemar, Jackie, Josianne, Jocelyne, Jeicimara, sister-in-law Bernadette & Sandra Assis, Sandy Velikonja’s family Evan & Leah Jean and partner Steve Cope, Susan Lawrence’s family Peter, Mark & Gemma Rose and dear friend Barry Davidson, M.D.  Leo was pre-deceased by his father Jose de Paula Assis and his brother Gilberto. Leo’s medical life began in Brasil where he earned his medical degree. After choosing a residency in New York, a year later he opted for Canada. At St. Boniface Hospital, he met Sharon, married in 1977, and they began their life together in Canada. Leo took pride in his career as a radiologist which began in 1974, becoming a neuroradiologist in 1979, and continued practising until his retirement in 2009. His professional journey took him through Sao Paulo, New York, Winnipeg, Kingston and London. Although a neuroradiologist, he had a special passion for teaching and enjoyed his time with residents, technicians and nurses; and it did not stop with medicine. Leo was a willing teacher for anyone wanting the secrets of his cooking. Throughout his life, the love of food and wine often took centre stage and many knew him for his ability and interest in these topics. A Celebration of Life for Leo will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., at Grosvenor Lodge, 1017 Western Road, London. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the London Multi Organ Transplant Unit >www.LHSF.ca, in memory of Dr. Leopoldino Assis. Please join the family for hors d’oeuvres and wine after the service as we reminisce highlights of Leo’s life.

I am deeply honored and blessed to have known Leo. It was next to Leo that we all created good times that became wonderful memories forever. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are always with you. Lots of love and peace, Nadia, Maite & Andrea

Dr Assis was a great teacher within the Radiology Department @Victoria Hospital. Throughout his years I am sure he taught many. One thought to share was while working at the reception desk. I would receive a call (on more than one occasion) to notify the Dr who left his car running in the parking lot. A smile would appear on Dr Assiss' face that he'd forgot again, once I notified him . My sympathies are extended to the family of Dr. L Assis.

Many of our most beloved memories are the times we shared with Leo and his family in their home. The scent of Leo's homemade breads, and Leo and Sharon's kindness towards their friends and family are forever in our hearts. We are so grateful to have shared this time with you. Sending all our love to Sharon, mother Valentina, Doug, Lourdes, William, and family <3 Love, Rogerio, Sahadia, Natascha, and Yasmin.

I'm very sadly struck by the news of Leo's passing. Our friendship goes back to Winnipeg in the early 70's where we shared a lot of time together with lots of conversation and wine. When he was not working or studying he used to love spending time with his brazilian friends. Memories that I'll keep in my heart. My sympathy to Sharon and his family.

Our family offers our most sincere condolences to the Assis family. Dr. Assis and his family were really nice to us. They would be so kind to host pool parties for us to enjoy ourselves and he would make the most delicious bread. He and his loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers. Miriam, Fernando, Mariana & Lucas

My memories of Leo are larger than life. I loved his wit, his kindness, and especially the mysterious solitude of his character. Sending much love and many prayers to all who love Leo.
