VE3 BMU – Peacefully at Victoria Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, May 4th, 20l0, at the age of 89. He was born in Guelph, Ontario, to the late Frank and Bertha Chappell. Beloved husband of Hilda Hibbert-Chappell, and the late Patricia Chappell (l987). Proud father of Jill Simpson and her husband Michael, and Peter Chappell and his fiancée Cathy Nichols (Pickering, On.). Dearly loved by his grandchildren Amy and Chad Simpson (Vicki Corcoran), Patrick Chappell (Leigh Garner), Kyle and Michelle Chappell. Ken will be greatly missed by his stepdaughter Carolyn Griffin and her husband Ted (Seaforth, On.), stepdaughter-in-law Rosemarie Hibbert, stepgrandsons Neil Hibbert (Lisa Clarke), Ian Hibbert (Genevieve Samuels) and Bruce Griffin. He will also be fondly remembered by several nieces, nephews and good friends. Predeceased by brothers Roy (Grace) and Claude (Joyce) Chappell, his sister Maude (Bob) Millar, daughter-in-law Berthe Chappell and stepson Ron Hibbert. Ken became an amateur radio operator at the age of l6. Later he attended the radio academy and proudly served as a radio officer in the British Merchant Navy (l940-l946). After the war, Ken served in the Army Militia for 13 years, in #9 Sigs. Unit. He was again a very active “ham” enjoying his conversations with people all over the world. In recent years he was limited to on air friendships with local “hams”. For many years his favourite pastime was sailing, mainly at Goderich, and the past 20 years Ken and Hilda enjoyed weekly square and round dancing, as well as travelling to Canadian Conventions from coast to coast. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Byron branch. Sincere thanks to Dr. W. McKeough for his outstanding care and compassion, and his great sense of humour. Many thanks also to Susan (St. Elizabeth Health Care) for her exceptional care and cheery attitude which brightened Ken’s days. The family will receive visitors at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church, 111 Elmwood Avenue East, on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation and interment of ashes, Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
