Kathleen (Kathy) Ann Haines

December 13, 2023

It is with deep sadness that the family of Kathleen Ann Haines announces her passing on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at University Hospital.  This followed a long period of multiple medical problems, culminating in a stroke.

Kathy was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1942 and grew up in that city.  In 1961 she met her future husband, Roland, while he was a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh.  They were married in 1964 and moved to Los Angeles for one year.  In September of 1965 they moved to London, Ontario and established a home in the Sherwood Forest area of the city.  Together they shared over 59 years of marriage with each other. She is sadly missed by her husband, Roland; children: David, Heather (Tom), Lauren and Debbie (James); and eight grandchildren: Nick, Victoria, Evan, Nolan, Ava, Carys, Ethan and Aiden.  She is also missed by her brother, Mike, who lives in Calais, Maine.

Kathy was always a person who was actively involved with other people.  While her children were in their younger years, she both led and participated in many different events at their schools.  She also quickly became involved in youth activities at Riverside United Church, where she was Superintendent of the Junior Sunday School department for many years.  In this role she recruited and supervised over twenty helpers and teachers annually for a twelve-year period.  As her children grew older she upgraded her office skills at Fanshawe College, and this led to her becoming the Church Secretary and Administrator at St. George’s Anglican Church in London.  She served in this role for 22 years and became actively involved with many persons in this congregation.  In addition to her official duties, she also initiated and led many special group activities involving seniors.  Following retirement in 2007, she returned to activity in her home church, Riverside United, and quickly developed programs directed towards seniors.  In fact, caring for seniors was always an important priority for Kathy right until the end.  She will be deeply missed.

At this time, the family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses and all the members of the very capable medical staff at University Hospital who provided such wonderful care to Kathy in the final stages of her life.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with Visitation taking place one hour prior at Riverside United Church, 695 Riverside Drive, London.  For those wishing to do so, contributions to Riverside United Church or a charity of your choice would be deeply appreciated.

I am saddened to belatedly learn of Mrs. Haines’ passing. I remember her very fondly, as a busy and involved neighborhood mother, when I was a child in the early 80s and Heather was my bestie. She modelled her faith, and tolerated A LOT of kids playing and having sleepovers in the basement! My sincere condolences - and a warm hug - to her whole family.

I was saddened to read the news this morning that your wife, mother and grandmother had passed away. Kathy was a valued client and friend of my mom’s and after her passing, I would see her when dropping off products once or twice a year. Sending you my deepest condolences. So very sorry for your loss. Sincerely Rebecca Carruthers ❤️

It was with great sadness that Bill and I heard the news this morning of Kathy's passing. I worked with Kathy at St. George's Anglican Church a number of years ago, and it was a wonderful experience. Kathy was a truly caring person, and she filled the church with her compassion, her humour and her love. She always went the extra mile in her work and in her relationships. A big priority for Kathy was making sure to the best of her ability that no one was left out of Senior's Communion services. We offer our deepest sympathies to Roland. David, Heather, Lauren, Debbie and all the family.

Dear Roland & family, we are saddened to read of Kathy’s death. There are so many memories centred around life at Riverside, especially our years in the Sunday School where Kathy was an inspiring and dedicated leader. May your many wonderful memories comfort and sustain you in the days and months ahead. Sincerely, Kathryn & Bill Kiel

When I left my position as Secretary at St. George's in the mid 1980's, Kathy took over. I couldn't have been more pleased--she did an outstanding job. The congregation loved her and she loved them! My sincere condolences go out to Roland and members of Kathy's family--she will be truly missed!
