Peacefully gone to his rest on Wednesday, October 30th, 2013 in his 88th year. Survived by Elscke, his wife and best friend of 62 years and his daughter Willemien Stanger and daughter-in-law Linda Alkema. Predeceased by his son Roy Alkema and son-in-law Robert Stanger. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren Ian, Andréa (Matthew), Jessica and Emily. He will be missed by his sister Sylvia (Han), sister-in-law Rie (Kees) and his many nieces and nephews in The Netherlands. I am so sorry for your loss, John was a great neighbour. I fondly remember hearing his lawn mower being the first of the season and the rest of us trying to keep up! He will be missed.

I am saddened to hear of John's passing. I fondly remember my many visits to John and Elscke's home and the great visits we had while Roy and I were going to the University of Guelph and after we graduated. My prayers are with John's wonderful family Elscke, Linda, Jessica, Emily, Willemien, Ian and Andrea.
