John “Jack” Victor Hill
February 23, 2023
It is with great sadness that the family of Jack Victor Hill announces his passing on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at home, surrounded by family. Dearly beloved husband for 68 years to Joan (née Wilson). Loving father of Marilyn Maw (Cameron), Ron Hill (Darla), Vic Hill (Sylvia), and Pam Lamond (Jeff). Proud grandfather of Jason Maw (Amy), Lisa Konkle (Sam), Keith Hill, Greg Hill, Alex Lamond (Alicia), Ben Lamond (Brittany), and Chris Charlebois (Amy). Kind and fun-loving great-grandfather of Evan & Nolan Maw, Ava & Hudson Konkle, and Eden & August Charlebois. Fondly remembered by his sister Gerri Malloy (Harvey 2022), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his parents Rowland & Gladys Hill; sister Vivian Cramp 2016 (Stewart 1998); sister-in-law Barbara Bunton 2017 (Jim 2012); brother-in-law John Wilson 2022; daughter-in-law Irene Hill 2010.
Family was of the utmost importance to Jack. Over the years, the extended family would enjoy memorable poolside gatherings at their home, or take joint vacations to Muskoka, Grand Bend and their very special place on Sanibel Island in Florida. Jack and Joan also travelled extensively through Canada, the USA, the Caribbean and Britain. Throughout his life, Jack also enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests, including golf, tennis, swimming, painting, photography and model aircraft building. An avid reader, he was a passionate history buff and was always up for any kind of card game. He was an excellent Scrabble player, as his caregivers and daughter Pam can attest.
After graduating from the University of Toronto, Jack worked in the West briefly before returning to Toronto where he and Joan were married. His career in geology took the family across Canada, from Ontario through Quebec and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. They then returned to Ontario, ultimately settling in Chatham, where he was employed by Imperial Oil and later Union Gas. Jack had a very successful career as a petroleum geologist exploring for oil and gas in the Southwestern Ontario oilpatch. They moved to London, where Jack started his consulting career as a partner with Pounder, Harmon & Hill, which led to several significant natural gas discoveries in Lambton County. He then operated Reeftop Inc., a consulting firm for the oil and gas industry. He served as President of the Ontario Petroleum Institute and made many lifelong friends during his time in the business. His passion for geology was matched by his sons who also took up the profession and live in Alberta.
The family would like to extend special thanks for the compassionate care that Jack received from his doctors, nurses and PSWs. A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023 at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception.

A donation has been made to Metropolitan Church. Message from the donator: Jack and Joan (all all the Hill family) were wonderful neighbours on Springfield Crescent. We have many fond memories of being with Jack and Joan and watching their kids and grandkids grow up. We shall miss that twinkle and smile of Jack's. A very kind gentleman. A real family man in his actions and in his heart.
I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Joan and the Jack Hill family. Jack was a close colleague and friend to all of us in the Ontario oil and gas industry. I am scheduled for hip replacement surgery and will be unable to attend Jack's Celebration of Life services on March 31, 2023 Len Boychuk
Jeff, Pam and family We are very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time. Cherish your fond memories.
The time I spent with the Hill family will always carry a special place in my heart. Being able to support Jack and Joan gave me purpose, joy and the determination to carry on with my studies. Jack was an amazing person who always treated me with kindness and would always find ways to offer me praise even when I would beat him at scrabble. I will hold onto the time spent with him dearly, no matter how short it was. I offer my deepest condolences to his family. Gone, but never forgotten xo
My deepest condolences to the entire Hill family. I remember all of you as a kid growing up as your next door neighbor in Chatham. Jack always had a great sence of humor and as a high-strung kid growing up, he always seemed to have the time and patience to me when often others didn't. Although we lost contact many years ago after you moved to London it looks like he had lots to be proud of in each and every one of you. Again so sorry to all of you for your loss.

I first met Jack around June 1974 when working as a Junior Geologist for the Petroleum Resources Div. of MNR. From then until my departure for the wild west in June 1980, Jack was a great mentor, always willing to share his thoughts, views and technical expertise whenever he came into the office on Central Ave., in London, ON. I have always remembered him as a kind, soft spoken, knowledgeable man willing to share his geological prowess with a budding geologist. My heart goes out to Joan and the family.
