John Imrie Nielsen
July 26, 2011
On Tuesday, July 26th, 2011, peacefully at home in London, Ontario, John (Jack) Imrie Nielsen passed away in his 91st year. Beloved husband for 63 years of Edith (Reid) and loving father of Ian Nielsen (Valerie M’Garry) of Delaware, Ontario, and Larry (Theresa) Nielsen of London, Ontario. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Lauren (Joel) McLean, Nicole Nielsen, and John Taylor Nielsen. Jack is predeceased by his sister Annie Cook and brother Dennis Nielsen, and survived by his many nieces and nephews and their families. Jack was born and raised on a farm at Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. He attended Olds Agricultural College in 1938/39. He joined the army in January 1941 and after basic training was posted to Aklavik N.W.T. He served the next twelve and a half years at various locations on the N.W.T. and Yukon Radio System. On leaving the North, Jack served at Canadian Forces Bases Borden in Kingston, followed by two years on a NATO posting in London, England. Returning to Canada, he served at army headquarters in Ottawa. He retired in 1970 after 29 years and happily took up the role as “house husband”. Jack was an avid curler and lawn bowler and loved playing bridge. Our sincere thanks to our family members, neighbours, Eunice, Peter, Cheryl, CCAC, Senior Homecare by Angels, VAC, Hospice and the ParaMed nurses and the many personal support workers for their incredible service and help. A memorial reception will take place at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, Ontario, on Saturday, July 30th, 2011 between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Donations to the War Amps or the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family. Dear Edith - we were saddened to see the obituary for John in the Ottawa paper. We have fond memories of curling at the RA. We were talking about you not that long ago, when I tried lawn bowling with a friend. I remember you doing that as well. & again doing it well. Know you have our sympathies & celebrate a well lived life. Gail & Ulysse
