MacDONALD, John A. –

January 1931 – January 2018

Peacefully with family by his side, at Victoria Hospital, on Saturday, January 6th, 2018, in his 87th year. Beloved husband of the late Catharine (2006). John is survived by his sons Allan and Norman (Dorothy); his daughters Catharine and Nancy (Tod); his grandchildren:  Isabelle, Allan, John, Cindy, Jim, James, Katie, Alyse, Laura, Hayley, Ryan and Rachael; and by 16 great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his sons Jim (1979) and Jack (2014). John MacDonald was born in 1931 in Port Morien, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to Norman and Margaret MacDonald. A Class “A” mechanic and business owner in Newmarket, Ontario for the majority of his career, John was also an active member for many years of Optimist International, serving in various capacities including as President of the Newmarket Optimist Club and eventually serving as Lieutenant Governor of Optimist International Canada. John will be remembered for his humour and his talent for telling wonderful stories of folklore and family. A memorial service will be held in the Spring. Thank you to the nurses and doctors at Victoria Hospital, London, for their compassionate care.

I knew the first time that I met him that we would be friends. He was my brother-in-law. but I came to think of him like a brother. He was always so kind and helpful over the years to me and my late wife Mary. He was a real treasure to have in our lives.

My condolences to all the family. My best memories of Uncle John are from when I was a very young girl and we would visit from the east coast. John was my favourite uncle because he was so quick to laugh and smile - such a delight for a little girl. All the brothers (and one sister) were quick to laugh - they are all missed.
