Iva Eileen Flick
December 21, 2021
What a wonderful life – 97 years of greatness! On Tuesday, December 21, 2021, we said goodbye to our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Iva Flick, who passed away peacefully at Elmwood LTC home, surrounded by the love of her family.
Iva was the daughter of the late John Walden and Mamie (Brown) MacPherson. Born and raised in Manchester, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. She was the oldest of her siblings and when her mother passed at 39 years old, she took on the task of helping her father with the other six children. She faced life with a “get on with it” attitude. She married Orland Earl Flick in 1947 and a few years later they made the decision to move to Ontario. Iva worked at Sears and then Cumis Insurance until she retired. She was a wonderful cook – pasta soup, corn chowder, apple crisp and warm dinner rolls will forever live on in our memories. She loved her rose gardens, a good game of golf, bridge, euchre and a glass of wine or beer but most of all she loved great fashion – always the best dressed in the room. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, the Gabby Gals, Marlene Robinson, many friends in Hamilton, Port Dover and London and Jane and Dino DeGrazia who have lost their second mother.
Iva is survived by her daughter, Carol Anderson (Brian) of Port Dover; son, Rod (Joanne) of London; grandchildren, Shelby-Jai Flick (Dan Proulx) of Calgary and Jared Flick (Sue Ruhe); great-granddaughter, Avalina Flick of London; sister, Jessie Kavanagh of Hamilton; and brother, Sidney MacPherson of Manchester, Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Orland Earl (December 20, 1990), and her siblings, Parker MacPherson, Roy MacPherson, Shirley Hancock and Anita Kavanagh.
The family thanks the wonderful staff at Longworth Retirement Home for their care and kindness for five years and Elmwood LTC Home for making the last few months comfortable and loving. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date where we will raise a glass to a wonderful lady. Cheers to you Iva! In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Iva are asked to consider the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or St. Joseph’s Hospice of London.

My condolences for your loss. I knew Iva fairly well from being a fellow CUMIS employee. When I started working there in the fall of 1976 I did not have a car (until June 28, 1977). I had to rely on others for transportation - primarily Bob Burns as he lived closest to me at East 36th and Queensdale. Whenever Bob was unavailable due to vacation, illness, etc. I would ride with Mac Paterson. He lived just south of Queensdale on either East 41st or 42nd. Iva, as well as Harry Gilpin and Les Couglin were also part of his car pool group. There was another gentleman (Reg?) who had recently retired opening up a seat for me. Iva was always nice to me and seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. I have many fond memories of those infrequent car rides. It saddened me to hear she had passed. Take care, Mike Kennedy
