Passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the age of 71, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Loving husband and best friend of Mary Elizabeth (McComb) Jones for 47 years. Beloved father of Shane, Jeremy and Ryan (Rebecca). Adored by his 2 grandchildren, Ethan and Annabelle.
Hugh started as an Electrical Operator at Ontario Hydro in January, 1973. Over his 44 years in Woodstock, North Bay, Niagara Falls, London and Barrie, Hugh was known as a trusted co-worker, friend and mentor.
The family would like to take the opportunity to thank Valary and Yolanda, the nurses who cared for Hugh at home and the entire staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice, that provided comfort and care during his final days.
A special thanks to Dr. Stacie Kling. Her dedication, compassion, wisdom and empathy helped Hugh and his family through this trying time.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at the ILDERTON COMMUNITY CENTRE, 13168 Ilderton Road, Ilderton, Ontario, on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation two hours prior.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Hugh, donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice would be greatly appreciated by his family.

Heartfelt condolences to Hugh's family. A conversation with Hugh, whether it was 30 seconds, or 30 minutes, always made your day better. He was a shining example of how to treat people with kindness, and respect. He will truly be missed.
My condolences to all of Hugh's family. Hugh was my good friend from High School days at Alderwood. I always had good memories of him. Know how sad it is to lose a loved one! All the Best!

My sincere condolences to all of Hugh's family, especially Mary, Shane, Jeremy and Ryan and all of Hugh's friends that feel the pain of his passing. Although it has been a while since I spoke with Hugh, I have known him for a long time. I met him very early on in my career when I was just a trainee in 1980 at Beck. I worked with him again in London and then again in Barrie. I knew Hugh as a kind, funny, helpful, caring and genuine gentleman and, looking at the other condolences, he was like that with everyone - right up until he had to leave. The sadness and grief you feel is because Hugh was such a wonderful part of your life; let the wonderful memories lift your hearts through the times of pain and sorrow.

Mary and family my sincere condolences. Hugh was a great friend and admired co-worker who always seemed to make the shift enjoyable. Whether it be the days at Buchanan or up at Barrie, Hugh always kept the mood light and will always remember for his great caring nature. I am sorry I can't be there tomorrow but as you know Hugh will always have a place in everybody's heart.
I met Hugh for the first time back in 2004 when all the remaining electrical operators for Hydro One where transferred to Barrie. I hit it off with Hugh right away as did many of us as he was such a nice guy! Very easy to talk to with a laid back manner that serviced him well through the years. Hugh was very knowledgeable about his job and in particular the SW Ontario part of the electrical system. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with everyone and particularly with the young operators. His experience was invaluable and the fact that he liked to share that knowledge with others made him that more special of a person. Hugh always treated me with respect as he did everyone he met or worked with. There are not many "gentleman" in the world now a days I find but I can tell you from first hand experience that Hugh was at the top of that list! Rest in peace my friend.

I had the pleasure of working with Hugh at the Grid Control Centre where he was a consummate professional with redeeming qualities along with a compassion for friends and family second to none. I am a better person for having known him. My thoughts, prayers and condolences to his beloved.
My deepest condolences to Mary and family, so sorry for your loss. I first met Hughie back in 1995 when I was transferred to Buchanan TS in London. He was always willing to show me the ropes. He was such a nice guy always joking around. He will be greatly missed. Unfortunately I will be out of the country on the 13th but I will be with him in spirit.

Hugh's larger than life dedication to his family, job and co-workers, was obvious and was only trumped by his unassuming sense of humor. Affectionately referred to as 'Grampa Jones' by some, Hugh was always willing to lend a bit of advice, a kind word or interject some well placed humor to help everyone he worked with get through the stressful days at work. Mary and kids, Hugh was such a vibrant person. Great sense of humor. Best cousin ever! I am so sorry for this huge loss. We can all be thankful that we had the pleasure and honor of knowing him. I still remember all the times that we stayed with Hugh and Mary in Niagara Falls and Woodstock. We would show up for badminton tournaments and be in and out of Mary and Hugh's house all weekend. You were the best friends ever. Never knew another guy who was so handy in the kitchen, doing laundry and both of you dealing with your shift work so well. The memories that both of you have left us with, are amazing. They bring a smile to my face. Love Mona
How lucky are we to have met Mary, Hugh, Shane, Jeremy and Ryan 34 years ago at the hockey arena. Hugh was always eager to help in any way. A very special person. Our friendship and wonderful memories grew over the years. ...Hockey get togethers, laughs, surprise birthday party at our cottage for Nonie, laughs, the famous boat tubing , laughs, weekends in Niagara Falls, laughs, Shanty Bay weekends, laughs, Secured Hydro tour, Dominican Republic vacation, laughs... many more, etc, Thank you Hugh for giving us such wonderful memories! A beautiful gift...You most definately and always will be, a very Special, Classy and Gentle Friend. Continue your journey... We will miss you! I met Hugh 26 years ago when I moved to London for work. The time flew by quickly but his interest in the job and his caring for his friends and co-workers never wavered. His kindness, sense of humour and infectious personality made him well liked by all that met him. He will be missed.

It was a great encouragement to see family attentive to his needs, thank you:). Many times its the "presence" that makes the greatest impact. The noticeable love and sense of humor that was present, made me wish, I had known this soul a little longer. It really was a blessing knowing you Hugh. I met Hugh about 36 years ago at Buchanan TS. He was a kind & compassionate person always ready to help his coworkers . A wonderful person who will be missed. My deepest sympathies to Mary & family.

Like some others who have posted condolences, I too first met Hugh in 2004 when Hydro One's grid operations were centralized in Barrie. To describe Hugh as having been a gentleman of the highest order barely does his memory justice; his patience with everyone seemed almost boundless, whether it was with other utilities, customers, trainees, seasoned controllers, or management, and it is my recollection that it always took seriously egregious pain-in-the-butt behavior by someone to even begin the process of ruffling Hugh's feathers. Coming in as a notable close second, however, was Hugh's sense of humour; he could give as well as he received in the joking around department, and never ceased to be amused when his co-workers used another nickname for him, one that involved some atrocious anagramming of his name into "Huge Ones," the explanation of which is likely unnecessary . . . but when I think of huge ones now, I think of shoes, and it is my hope that those who follow in Hugh's steps may aspire to fill the ones he left behind. The world is an emptier place without him.

My condolences to Mary & family. I worked with Hugh for many years at Buchanan TS. He was known for his hard work and his caring for others. Myself and many other co-workers considered Hugh a good friend.
Mary and family - our sincere condolences on your loss, on all of our loss of Hugh. From Buchanan TS in London to the OGCC in Barrie I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Hugh. He was the last person that I knew that worked at the Toronto Power Generating Station and I enjoyed hearing his stories from there. We enjoyed his company at after work functions and I can hear his voice and his laugh. Hugh will be missed and always remembered.
Mary and Family We are so sorry to hear of Hugh passing away, and even sadder that we didn't keep in touch for the last few years. We will never forget the fun we had with both of you, Duke and Faye on all the trips we took together. They were great times. Kim, Kevin and Ronnie also send their condolences .
