Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Toivonen

December 11, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Toivonen on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, peacefully, surrounded by family at University Hospital, in her 89th year.

Cherished wife of Ronald (predeceased, December 4, 2023). Lovingly remembered by her children, Christine (Joe), Maureen (Brian), Eric (Sandra), and Michael (Sue).  She will be deeply missed by all her grandchildren, Austin, Kaylee, Aliena, Derek, Caitlin, Kennedy, Michael, Alyssa, Steven, Matthew, Ben, Brittany, Jenna, Riley and Carly.  She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by her parents Cecille and Joseph Martineau, and her sister Julienne.

Trudy was born in the tiny town of St. Vital in Northern Quebec. She travelled across Canada with a friend after she finished high school and settled in Alberta.  In Alberta, Trudy learned English and began her working career in a hospital.  Showing a strong work ethic, and taking initiative, she was given responsibilities in the x-ray department.  Trudy then moved to Sudbury, where she became a certified x-ray technician.  Also, while in Sudbury, Trudy met the love of her life, Ronald Toivonen.  Ron and Trudy were married on February 24, 1962; Christine and Maureen were born soon after.  In 1966, Ron and Trudy moved their young family to London so Christine could attend a school for the deaf.  A few years later, Eric and Michael were born, and completed the family.

In 1979, Ron and Trudy started their family business together.  Trudy, who had been a full-time mother of four, began her new career as the original bookkeeper for North Pole Trim.  When not working, Mom lived a full life, wintering in Florida, spending time with her grandchildren, and golfing with her West Haven friends.  Mom was proud of her French heritage and hung onto her accent all “trewout” her life. We will always remember her great home cooked meals, family get-togethers, camping trips, and family vacations to Quebec, Sudbury, Florida, and beyond.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Sunday, December 15, 2024 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., with words of remembrance beginning at 5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Trudy’s memory to MS Canada or the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners.
