Gerardus ‘Jerry’ Poels
October 28, 1944 - December 22, 2024
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gerardus ‘Jerry’ Poels, peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the age of 80. Jerry was the beloved husband of Margaret Poels (née Hilderley), predeceased June 14, 2024. A devoted father to Connie Iro, and an adoring grandfather to Victoria, Julia, and Dylan. His loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents Antonius and Anna Poels, along with siblings Ton (Sjan) Poels, Joanne DeBrouwer, Mary (Harry) Bongers, Betty (Pete) Ruyter, and sisters-in-law Diane Poels and Truus Poels.
Jerry is survived by his siblings Piet (Diel) Poels, Jan Poels, Jack Poels, Ann Marie (Bernie) DeBrouwer, Cor (Betty) Poels, Wim (Diny) Poels, Josie (Willy) Fransen and brother-in-law Chris DeBrouwer.
He was also a beloved brother-in-law to Alice (Mario) Guzzo, Cheryl (Dave) Lavallee and Gail Warner Smith. Predeceased by Donald Hilderley, Gary Hilderley, Darlene Leach and David Warner Smith.
Jerry will be remembered for his generosity and willingness to do anything for anyone. Whether it was fixing something, helping a neighbour, or showing up anywhere when needed, Jerry’s actions always spoke louder than words. His love for his family was profound, and he treated his wife, Margaret, like a queen, always ensuring she and those he cared for were supported and loved.
A man of many talents and hobbies; he loved soccer so much that he would often “help” the players on TV kick the ball! He was passionate about golfing, fishing, hunting, and skiing. Perhaps unexpectedly, Jerry was also an accomplished line dancer, moving with a calm, cool confidence that masked his impressive skill. Jerry was also a great mechanic apprentice. On top of all his passions, he was his grandkids’ superfan, always showing up to support their sporting events and activities. He truly was someone to look up to, inspiring his grandkids to strive for their best and to approach new challenges with courage and confidence.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers and medical staff, who provided exceptional support during this time.
Memorial reception will be held at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Monday, December 30, 2024 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the London Health Sciences Foundation in support of the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre.

I was deeply saddened to hear about Uncle Jerry’s passing. He was such an incredible godfather and a constant source of warmth, wisdom, and love in my life. I have so many fond memories of the times we shared skiing, family picnics, sports events and more. His influence on my life will never be forgotten and I will always hold him close to my heart. Unfortunately, I am in Quebec and, due to the distance, I am unable to attend the funeral in person. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family during this difficult time. As a small way to honour his memory, I will be making a donation to the London Health Sciences Foundation in support of the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre for all of the care he received and the impact that such institutions have on those battling cancer. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. I’m thinking of you, and sending all my love during this heartbreaking time. With all my love, Tara DeBrouwer and family
