George David Ironmonger

November 29, 1929 - August 15, 2023

Born on November 29th, 1929 in Ottawa, Ontario. Married to Audrey Dorothy Small, they had one daughter – Deborah Greenshields. Grandchildren Jennifer, Cynthia, Bryan and Seth; great-grandchildren Yvonne, Ceara, Uilliam, Caitlyn, Jamie, Chris and Jean-Luc; and nieces and nephews Terry, Brian, Sandra and Kim.

Predeceased by his parents George Ironmonger and Violet B. Clynick; he was the oldest of four children. Predeceased by his sister Sandra Joy and brother John Edward “Eddie” Ironmonger. His brother Robert is currently resident in Singapore.

Despite his relative youth his contribution to Canada’s effort in WW2 was working on the assembly of airplanes for the RCAF. Graduating from high school he pursued further education as a draftsman and was employed as a civilian employee by the Department of National Defense in the Ottawa Field Engineer Company on Lees Avenue. Further training and opportunities led him to the National Energy Board. He retired from Federal Service after 37 years.

Active in his church and community, George was a Life Member of Prince of Wales Lodge No. 371 of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the province of Ontario, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Initiated in 1952, he was Worshipful Master of his lodge in 1965 and appointed Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge in 2001. His interest in the various aspects of Free Masonry led to his becoming a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite.

In 2014, in recognition of his various forms of community service, George was appointed Honorary Colonel and Aide De Camp to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. His hobbies and interests included model boat building, genealogy, gardening, photography and chess.

George passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 15th, 2023 and is well remembered by members of his immediate and extended family.

Funeral service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation an hour prior to the service. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.
