Frances “Evelyn” McCabe

March 5, 2025

Evelyn was the 2nd child born to Samuel and Charlotte (Middleton) Carnew on October 1, 1927.  She is survived by daughter, Pearl (and Clayton) Strickland, Orlando, Florida; four nieces, (Heather, Irene, Iris and Zena) and 5 nephews (Trevor, Howard, Sholto, Jason and Sean) living in Ireland, England, Canada and Australia.  Evelyn is predeceased by her parents, husband Austin (2019) and all 4 of her siblings, George, Samuel, Lena and Fred.

After her school years, Evelyn “served her time” (unpaid employment) at her Uncle’s general store.  Eventually she moved to Belfast and was employed as a carpet designer. She loved embroidery and sewing and tackled some large detailed projects.  Piano was always an interest and she finally took lessons in the 1990’s until her eyesight deteriorated.  She loved to bake and work through complicated gourmet recipes.

Evelyn set up home in 8 different places after her marriage in 1953.  The family left Northern Ireland in1968 and spent three years travelling through Australia, New Zealand, US, and Canada before settling in Toronto in 1971 for 25 years.  London became their home in 1999.  In each place her joy was inviting and preparing meals for their new acquaintances of Workers and Friends.

Above all, Evelyn treasured the invitation she received to attend gospel meetings in Belfast in 1950 which she embraced with her whole heart in 1952 and resigned the rest of her life to God’s Will in every situation.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London  at 12:00 p.m. with visitation taking place one hour prior.  For those unable to attend the visitation or service, please click here Remembering Evelyn.

Such a sweet lady. With the sweetest smile. Remembering when they arrived in London ON, and visits in their home. And yes the magnificent table setting and meal Evelyn would put on. We are thinking of you Pearl & Clayton.

Pearl, we think of you as you lay to rest your dear Mom. She lived a good life and has gone on to eternal rest, comfort and joy. Never easy to say goodbye to a parent. Love, Vern & Connie

Our thoughts are with you in a special way since hearing of your moms passing , Pearl. For her it is a good day and her faith has carried her through. She encourages us to do the same, to finish well and then be able to enjoy what is awaiting in eternity.
