Elaine Ann Walker

July 28, 2017

May 4, 1949 – July 28, 2017

On July 28, 2017, at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, Elaine Walker (nee Peckover) passed away at the age of 68, comforted by family and friends.

Elaine was born May 4, 1949 at the Carman Hospital in Manitoba to Lloyd and Irene Peckover (Roth).  She was raised, with her younger sister Linda, on the original (1895) Peckover farm two miles north of Sperling, Manitoba.

Elaine was predeceased by her parents Lloyd and Irene Peckover and brother-in-law Bob Colpitts.   Left to cherish her memory is her husband Dick Walker, their two children Richard (Erica) and their two daughters Cecilia and Tessa; and Robyn (Rob) Massa, and their children, Ashley, Kaylie, Jessica, Joshua, Matteo and Tyler.   Also, sister Linda (Vic Baleja), sisters-in-law Linda Walker, Paula Walker-Speiler (John), brothers-in-law Doug (Joan), John Douglas (Barb), mother-in-law Betty Walker and many nieces and nephews.

Elaine was a kind, considerate and compassionate person who loved people, and everyone who knew Elaine loved her.  She brightened a room with her smile, her laughter and of course her flair for fashion.  Elaine loved to visit and had a true and sincere interest in the lives of everyone around her.   Birthdays, anniversaries and special celebrations never passed by without a card or a call, or both, from Elaine.  Even when Elaine’s own health was failing her love of life and her support and caring for others never faltered.  Persons who knew Elaine were truly blessed; her life was a true example of love, putting others first and doing for others as you would have them do for you.

Elaine graduated from Carman Collegiate in 1967.  She attended U of Manitoba, achieving a teaching certificate in 1968 and continued in the field of education (Bachelor Degree in Education from U of M and Masters in Special Education from Auburn U, Alabama) throughout her career retiring as a principal in 2005.  It was also at the U of M where Elaine met Dick.  Dick and Elaine were married in 1969 and shared almost 48 wonderful years of marriage together.   Their life in the military took them to numerous locations where they made long and lasting friendships that continue to this day.

Ottawa was home for some 26 years.  It was difficult to move to London, Ontario in 2008 but grandchildren next door took precedence; what a blessing!

A Memorial service will be held at Byron United Church, 420 Boler Road, London, Ontario, on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 2 pm.  As well, a gathering of friends and family will take place in Sperling, Manitoba on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 2 pm at the Community Centre.

Special thanks go out to all of the Doctors and Nurses at the University, Victoria, Parkwood, and St Joseph’s Hospitals.  In -home care from the Personal Support Workers, Volunteers from Hospice, and the Palliative Care Team was always given with professionalism and compassion.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to St. Joseph’s Hospice, 485 Windermere Road, P.O. Box 1449, Station B, London, ON N6A 5M2; 519-438-2102.

Elaine was a beautiful example of how to live a life of grace and generosity. It didn't take long after meeting her to see the enormous capacity of her heart. Without fail she showed genuine interest in each person, asking about their lives, not once saying how difficult her own was. It was a privilege to have met Elaine. Wishing all of your dear family comfort and rest in God's enveloping arms.

Elaine was my first friend and the cousin closest to me in age...I am six months older. We shared many happy childhood events... Christmas with the Roth family (our maternal extended family) and summer vacation bible school at the Sperling United Church (which meant staying at Uncle Lloyd and Auntie Irene's for a week which I always loved) being favourite highlights. In May 2016, my daughter Rebecca, grandson Sean and I drove from Toronto to visit Dick and Elaine. It was probably the best visit Elaine and I had ever had as we reminisced about everything we could possibly think of...looked at many photos of family members past and present, laughing, crying, holding hands and just loving each other. She has left us too soon but I am relieved her pain and suffering are over. Heaven has a very special angel now. I will miss you, cousin dearest. My condolences and love are extended over the miles to Dick, Richard, Robyn, Elaine's sister Linda and all their family members. I will see you all in Sperling on September 20th.

It's never easy losing a person you love. Take time to grieve and don't "rush" the process...we all heal differently when it comes to time. Feel what you need to and allow yourself that. Embrace the little things in life that Elaine made special to each and every one of you. The year of firsts are the hardest without her...first Christmas, Birthday, etc. Be grateful for the time you had with her, and cherish her memory.

She was a very nice sorta older sister, I spent a lot of time at Lloyd & Irene's with Linda. I don't think she was that happy with all our antics but I don't ever remember her not laughing about them. She was a very kind person. Ollerton R
