Dr. Murray Girotti

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Girotti as an OR nurse at Victoria hospital . He was a pleasure to work with and an incredible surgeon. He will be greatly missed.My deepest sympathies .

Dear Jan, Katherine, Lindsay and Matt I know my sorrow and sense of loss pales in comparison to yours, but I can find solace in the time I have spent with Murray. I think when Murray and I first met we seemed to click as friends. I feel a special privilege to be part of your "Florida family". One of Murray's golf course quotes was " I didn't come to Florida to lay up". I think that sums up his life --he didn't come into this world to "lay up".

Dear Jan & family. How sad we were to learn of Murray's passing. He will be greatly missed but will live on in those he taught, mentored & came in contact with. We count ourselves among those who knew him, even though it was only a few short years. Know that we are here for you during this difficult time with our prayers.

To the Girotti Family: Murray was my senior resident and patient (when he presented with his first pericardial effusion issues) in our time together at Queen's. I could not have had a better mentor - colleague and friend during our time in Toronto and beyond. He was a unique human being that none that had the pleasure of his company personally or professionally will ever forget. He was so intelligent, enthusiastic, passionate, driven and yet so down to earth, inclusive, considerate, compassionate, loyal and most of all courageous in the face of major physical and emotional challenges. He was inspirational in how he faced whatever nature through at him in his typical positive, whimsical, all ahead full, anything is possible fashion. Fortunately for so many, he never lost that twinkle in his eye, drive to make a difference and the genuine concern and respect he had for all he encountered and touched in life.

Jan and family- We just wanted to let you all know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Murray was a tremendous help to us last year as we were going through our own tough times. His advice and compassion were a big help and comfort for us. Reading all of the above postings it is amazing that Murray had such an effect on so many people. He will be greatly missed.

I would like to express my sadness at the passing of such a wonderful Doctor and special human being. Dr. Girotti treated me in Kingston in 1979, along with many others. I will always remember the effort he put into putting me and my family at ease at such a difficult time. I can never express enough thanks and appreciation for what he did for me. He never let me or my parents lose hope and he touched my life greatly and he is someone I will never forget. He made a difference in my life and his family and children should remain proud of the mark he left in this world.

To Mr. and Mrs. Girotti, and to Theresa, my deepest condolences. Murray was my first, and best, childhood friend, the one with whom I shared many formative years and experiences. From the very beginning, he always led the way with skills and confidence that few of his peers could match, and with a sense of humor that precluded resentment. Although we lost contact after high school, the growing up we did together and his generous friendship have stayed with me through the years. He was my friend, and I will miss him.

It was with great sadness that I heard of Murray's passing. He left me with terrific memories of his warmth, intelligence and humour in each and every situation. He was a great friend and teacher to all who knew him. Moreover however, I am left with the personal memory of a person who lit up the room when he walked in, a force of positive energy and enthusiasm. Whether attending a function or tackling a challenge, he injected the positivity and spirit that buoyed all around him. Thank you Murray. My heart goes out to the Girotti family at this difficult time.

Dear Jan, Murray's infectious enthusiasm and smile will always be with me. He may be "up there" with his " Spirit in the Sky", but he's left a lot of his own spirit and inspiration with us down here. God Bless you, Murray.

Dear Girotti Family Murray made an important mark in my life - first as a teacher in the ICU and then for the last 25 years as a friend. Everyone's lives that he touched were made better by knowing him. We will miss him dearly.

Jan and family: Our hearts just fell apart at the news of Murray's passing. What a priviledge it was to know such an incredible person. Murray was a great service to all of mankind and loved life so much. God is not finished with him yet! He will be missed here. Our prayers and thoughts are with you always.

Jan and Family One really gets to know someone when you travel with them and spend many days and nights together. Our trip to Europe for three months in the volkswagon van together has many memories that still bring smiles to our faces. Do you remember the long toilet handle that Murray carried into our bedrooms? Do you remember campari for breakfast? Do you remember finding Clint Eastwood's glasses at the top of the mountain in Switzerland? The Italian taught us all the right questions to ask to avoid the taxes but we still ended up paying for someone to set the table!! Those are but a few as some we wouldn't be able to put in print! Meeting during the internship year set the stage for a lifetime of friendship and our one regret is we didn't get together more often! Love to all of you and we hope that the smiles that Murray put on many faces will keep you strong during the tough times. I will always remember Dr. Girotti as a close mentor and friend. He was instrumental in my choice to pursue General and Trauma Surgery as a career. His kindness and caring nature will be an inspiration to me as I begin my training and career. My thoughts are with his friends and family.

Sometimes, along life's path, you brush up against someone who simply by their presence, makes life better. I have spent my entire career, as a rural doc, battling geography, weather....and all that rural trauma inherently presents....and for a lifetime, Murray has been on the other end of the phone...guiding me. Respectful, comical, infinitely wise.....he was the "welcoming" smile, at the end of the transfer. No one was a greater advocate for the rural patient, and no one was a greater professional friend. Trusting that someone as unbelievably "spirited" as Murray, will live on in all he touched and all those he taught. With heavy hearts....we remember.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Murray Girotti, whom I knew only superficially when I was working as medical researcher at Kingston General Hospital back in 1984-85. Murray was a newly minted trauma surgeon and intensivist, whose knowledge, skill and positive demeanour were legendary. I helped build him a device for monitoring ventilation. In return, he wrote me a letter of recommendation for medical school at Queen's. Unfortunately, it was not enough to support my application, but I never forgot his positive attitude and uplifting spirit. We recently communicated by e-mail about the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Scholarships and I was hoping to reunite with him. A great man and obviously a great career and great life. Mrs. Girotti & Family, please accept my most heartfelt condolences in the passing of Murray. Although we had not seen each other since high school, I have always remembered him as a wonderful person. Although our paths became parted by years and country, it was obvious to many of us, even in those early years that he would accomplish great things. Clearly, he did!

Our paths crossed for a brief moment in Toronto in Dr Tom Todd's Lab. Thus began our lasting friendship from distance. Murray had many good qualities, and above all, sincerity in all his doings and respect for all. I will always remember him.faconM

I have been asked to deliver the Murray Girotti injury prevention lecture at the Trauma 2013 Conference in Canada, in his name and in the name of injury prevention. I am honored by reading these memories of him, and to learn of his compassion, his skill, and his spirit that moved so many people, and patients. As one person said " he injected the positivity and spirit that buoyed all around him". And so he did as well, with efforts toward prevention.

Jan & Family: We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Dr. Girotti's passing. It would be difficult to overstate that man's achievements, and the countless lives he has touched. I for one would not be a surgeon today had it not been for his support. He brought a level of energy and enthusiasm to London's surgical program that was unmatched. Always optimistic; always upbeat; always looking forward. He had a rare gift for making an otherwise arduous and difficult surgical training program seem fun. His sudden passing represents a devastating loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Jan and family Having worked so closely with Murray over the past 12+ years leading the LHSC trauma program and the Provincial Trauma Network, like so many others I am feeling the loss of a great leader, physician, friend and family man. Murray inspired me to be so much more than I thought I could be...he had a gift of uncovering talents in people that they didn't know they had and supported them to be more than they ever thought they could be. He respected and treated everyone as his equal and no job or task was beneath him - I recall a day in the office when we were preparing for our annual Talk Trauma conference and had an assembly line going to put together the conference packages...Murray came in and offered to help...that was just the kind of person he was. Dear Girotti Family My wife Rosanne and I have known Murray since before highschool. He was a fellow scholar, athlete, and friend since our youth. Although our lives went in different directions after highschool, Murray remained one of the best people in our lives. I tried to keep up with his career through his mom and dad, and was so happy to see him at the Denis Morris 50th Reunion. Our daughter Tara followed in his footsteps, and consulted with him during her residencies. Murray will always have a special place in our hearts and will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Dear Jan and family, When we learned of Murray's passing we were speechless and saddened to know we would not see his smiling face again. He was everyone's doctor. He researched a surgeon for me before I had my back surgery. He checked out some nodules that John was worried about and reassured him that it was nothing. He was a fine, intelligent man. He shall be greatly missed by all that knew him in the Cascades.

Dear Jan and Family, Suzie and I were terribly saddened to hear of Murray's death. I have very fond memories of Murray as a medical student, surgical resident and and finally as an Attending Staff colleague at Queen's. Murray was always full of enthusiasm and left an indelible impression not only on the students he taught, the patients he cared for but also on his peers. His zest for life in all aspects was infectious. Suzie and I remember all too well the many parties and dinners you both hosted. Annually we have a Chief Resident's dinner for the graduating surgical residents. All the past residents and staff are invited. Murray frequently came and livened the party up with his many stories of past surgical adventures and misadventures. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to the family. We were shocked to here of Murray's death. I remember him as a little boy in his fathers factory. When I first came to canada (60 years ago) I got a job at Girotti's as a machinist. I have fond memories and much respect for the entire family. At one point, I even worked with Murray teaching him how to be a machinist. He was a good person and we are truly sorry to hear he has passed away.

Dear Jan, and all of the Girotti Family, near and far: A testament to the charisma, caring, warmth and wonderful effect which Murray had on everyone he met, even for a brief time, is summed up as I parphrase condolences sent to us by our 22 year old niece, Hannah Kost.... "I realize that the Girottis have been an endless source of comfort and laughter for both of you, and for that I am so grateful. But I also realize that makes this so much more difficult. At the Coney Island hotdog party years ago I found myself briefly alone, and Murray came over to chat. I remember being delighted to discover that he'd read Harry Potter and liked to travel, and just thinking he was the neatest guy. His warmth and kindness made such an impression on me: I've never forgotten that small encounter. It is a testament to his character and heart that a brief conversation could cause a kid to eagerly ask her dad (Mark) after his every visit to Ontario and Florida:"Did you see Murray?" There you have it folks...out of the mouths of babes. We all loved Murray and will miss him, always.

I had heard about Murray for a number of years but it was only in the last year and a half that we had the opportunity to work together on a regional patient access project. It was a real pleasure to have come to know him as have many, many others - as someone with true passion and a most delightful wit. He never used ten words when one or two would do. It is a sad day and both a personal and professional loss.

We've known Murray since we were all in medical school. His positive attitude, his warmth and his wisdom were ever-present and appreciated. Jan, I am a childhood friend of Murray. We grew up in the same neighbourhood in the same neighbourhood. We also shared an uncle, Nello Girotti. I watched Murray play ball with my brothers and I spent time at his childhood home playing with his sister Terry. I always remember him as a nice guy who enjoyed life. Dear Jan and family, Murray was a wonderful colleague who provided much appreciated advice and support during my tenure as dean. I enjoyed particularly working with him over the past couple of years as a member of the board of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. His enthusiasm and commitment were unflagging. His death leaves a great hole in the fabric of the London health care community. He will be greatlt missed.

Dear Jan & family: My daughter, Kathryn, called me in Arizona to tell me the sad news of Murray's passing. I am totally shocked and saddened. Both of you held a warm spot in my heart. It seems like just yesterday you were coming to London from Toronto, we were greeting you and then househunting together. It was delightful to then find you as neighbours at Riverbend. My thoughts and prayers for comfort are with you, sorry I'm not in London.

I was very saddened to hear of the loss of this great man. He touched and saved countless lives directly through the practice of surgery, and indirectly through his wonderful gift in the teaching of many surgeons. He was the consummate role model for us as young surgeons and we will be forever indebted to him. May God bless his family, friends, and the many who mourn his passing.

I was truly saddened by the news of Murray's death. We go back to Kingston in the late '70s when he was a surgical resident and I was a medical student. I had the great pleasure and privilege to know Murray for over 30 years and to work with him in many settings in Trauma, Critical Care and Surgery. Above all, Murray was an inspiration and a friend. I will miss him. We all will miss him. He will never be forgotten though. My condolences to the Girotti family. And Murray, I'm sure we'll meet again paisan.

I am so saddened to hear of Murray's passing, but so honored to have been blessed with his friendship, kindness and inspiration. He was a great man, who made everyone feel like a friend and an important person. Whenever we met, it was obvious that injury prevention and trauma care was his passion........but family and freinds were his true loves. Like so many, Deb and I have many fond memories of Murray's infectious enthusiasm and energy. He sought and achieved excellence in so many ways, and persevered despite challenges that would have stopped many others. I still remember having Murray as my senior resident on cardiology while he was doing a brief interlude in the internal medicine program. We had many amusing and enjoyable coffee breaks in the KGH cafeteria: John Fay regaling us with stories of the British navy and Murray trying to keep up, with his opinions on just about everything. Murray was a good friend to my brother, Gary, when they were in medical school at Queen's. It was devastating to lose my brother to cancer in 1997, but Murray had always been a link to my brother. At our Christmas get-togethers, I always looked forward to hearing stories from Murray about the hijinks he and Gary would get up to. We'll miss you especially at Christmas, Murray.

I had the privilege of being taught by Dr Girotti as a medical student at U of T in the late 1980's. His compassion, kindness and wit left a lasting impression on me. He really cared about his students and his patients. We met again briefly last summer at the fruit and vegetable stand in Byron where I was able to tell him how much I enjoyed being taught by him. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

To the Girotti family: I had the privelege of working for Murray as his resident in the ICU at TGH many years ago. He had a tremendous impact on me to the point that I still consider him as a mentor in surgery and education. He will be sadly missed.

To Randy, Lindsay and the entire Girotti Family--Please accept our sympathy on your loss, having only met Murray on a couple of occasions, we learned early from Ralph and Charm what a wonderful husband, father and grandfather Murray was. Dear Jan & Family, A few years ago, we were playing golf at Fairwinds Golf Club and after 9 holes, I went into the clubhouse and Murray went to get ice water for the back 9. As I walked through the pro shop, a man ran in and yelled "call 911". I asked him what happened and he said his playing partner had passed out. I found Murray and told him what had occurred and did he normally get involved. He told me I could always let someone know that he was a physician, regardless of the situation. Murray took care of the man until the ambulance arrived and then gave the EMT the necessary information to proceed with treatment on the way to the hospital. That spoke volumes about Murray...he was always there to help someone in need! As each year went by, there were more and more stories illustrating Murray's compassion toward others. He loved to talk about his family, new things in medicine, and of course...golf! He would challenge you, but not as much as he challenged himself...and always with a twinkle in his eye. When someone passes on , it is often said that he or she will be missed. In this case that is an understatement. Our condolences to your whole family and everyone that loved him.

Dear Jan, we were quite shocked to here of Murray's passing. We send our heartfelt condolences to you, Katherine, Lindsay, Matthew, their spouses and your grandchildren and to Murray's family. Some memories of Murray come to mind: Just after you moved in we invited you over for spaghetti and meatballs. I (Nancy) told him this was a very good recipe i got from my mother in law. He said no one made them like his mother. Once seated around our dinky little dining room table, he on awicker lounging chair where only his head showed above the table, he started singing, "On top of spaghetti all covered in cheese..." Right then and there we knew we were gonna really like The Girottis. From sitting on our roof top with David drinking beer and shootin the shit while gazing over the neighbourhood to drinking straight scotch with David while at a wine tasting party at your house to insisting that the kids just call him Murray to his loyalty to the dealership even after you moved to London, these are only a few of the neighbourhood memories we still talk about today to so many others. Jan and family. I was deeply saddened to learn of Murry's passing. As a new consultant surgeon coming on staff at Victoria Hospital, I was teamed with Murray as my partner. I will always be grateful for the support, advice, guidance and friendship he so easily gave over the many years we were colleagues. I was extremely surprised and saddened to hear of Murray's passing. Dr. Girotti inspired me as a medical student to become a surgeon. Later on in my career as a resident and a surgeon he was always available to talk at his house, on the phone or at meetings. He was a great teacher, surgeon and friend. I will miss him.

Murray and I were both residents of the Queen's University residence McNeill House and members of Arts '69. It happened that the women's residence cafeteria had been broken into and the knives removed. The Dean of Women was so enraged she required the female residents to eat the following night's supper, steak, with spoons. Eventually Murray was accused of being the instigator and the University was furious wanting heads to roll. However, the University could not do anything unless and until Murray was convicted by the Inter-residence Disciplinary Committee. I was Chairman of that body. When Murray came to be tried there was blatant pressure by the University to make a finding of guilt. Nonetheless, we acted judicially and found that the University had not presented enough evidence for us to be convinced of any wrongdoing and Murray was acquitted. From that I have gone on to a satiosfying career in law and Murray's accomplishments are many. I was sincerely saddened to read of his passing.

We were very shocked and sadened to hear of Dr.Girotti's passing. He was an outstanding Doctor very kind and caring and dedicated to his patients.We came to be very fond of Dr Girotti he took us under his wing when we needed someone the most. We will always be grateful.I have been a patients of Dr Girotti for over four yrs now he was always there when i needed him if he was concerned about something he would call you at home. What an outstanding doctors he was.I will miss our football chats i always teased him about his team.He always made you feel so comfortable what a great man he was. The University of Western Ontario and the Department of Surgery, in particular, have suffered a great loss. Firstly, Murray's renowned surgical skills were stolen by a dreaded disease, and now his vision and leadership, by his death.

It was truly a pleasure to have had the opportunity to be taught by Dr. Girotti. He was a mentor, an unwavering source of support and most importantly a role model for training physicians to look up to. The class of 2014 and Schulich family will deeply miss Dr. Girotti and we are forever indebted to him for the incredible contribution he has made to our lives.

I had the privilege of being a med student with Murray when he was a resident followed by working with him directly later on in his career. He was a great pleasure to know and to work with and we had a lot of laughs together. He loved the occasional cigar, good drinks, Christmas lights, the practice of medicine and his family. I feel honoured to to have known him.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Murray when he first came to LHSC. Much love, respect and admiration for his abilities, enthusiasm and spark. I am certain he will be sadly missed, but his presence will not be forgotten.

Jan- our thoughts are with you and we are profoundly saddened by this news. You may remember, Jan, that day in '74 or '75; I was a senior resident in Cardiology assigned to the CCU and you were a CCU nurse. The door burst open and the new clinical clerk, a certain Murray Girotti, swooped into the place as Paul Armstrong was making rounds. "I am here to make a difference" said Murray to the assembled, and all more senior, staff.... and what a difference he has made, to and for so many, from that day on. Some few years later I, as ER director, received a call from the CEO of a hospital an hour away from Kingston. Apparently a young KGH trauma surgeon, called by that hospital's docs to advise on the care of a patient with a head injury but too unstable with a ruptured spleen for transport, had leapt into his car, driven to this hospital (where he had never been before) helped the local docs remove the spleen and stabilize the patient, then accompanied the patient by ambulance to Kingston where his head injury was attended to. The CEO was wondering who on earth had come to his hospital, his OR and then left with a patient. I said, with pride, "that is my friend Murray Girotti", who then had to find a way to get his car back! A loyal alum of Queen's Meds, Murray brought us honour. He will be greatly missed.

Back in 1991, I was a cancer patient of Dr Girotti at 26 years of age. Without Dr Girotti's skill, knowledge, and complete loving care ,I would not be alive today. It is with great sadness, that I offer my kindest, sincere regret, that this beautiful man has lost his own battle with illness. I will never forget his loving care for me, and I wish only the best for the family. His gift to humanity, has touched me personally, and I will be forever thankful. I am so sorry for your loss.

Jan and family: Cory and I were deeply saddened to learn of your loss. I will never forget it was Dr. Girotti that supported my endeavor to be trained in the London surgical program. I will always be grateful for his support, teaching, and surgical training. Murray's enthusiasm for medicine in particular and life in general were infectious and inspiring. Cory and I fondly remember your warmth and generosity when you and Murray hosted the surgical residents at your wonderful home in the summer evenings and at Christmas time. Dear Janet and family.We am saddened by your loss and would ask that you please accept our condolences. I will remember Murray as the Dr who saved my fathers life -I had driven my elderly father from Belleville General Hospital (they refused an ambulance transfer)with an acute bowel obstruction - Murray recieved him at Toronto General Hospital and he and my father retreated to somewhere in the bowels of the Emergency Department. Andree and I waited for 4 hours with not a word and we were convinced he was in surgery or worse. Suddenly there was Murray with a huge grin on his face,slightly shaking his head, as if in disbelief, to announce that the old boy was AOK, no surgery, he just figured his way around a problem, that in its resolution was not a pretty occassion, as you imagine. Doctors come from a time honoured profession and he was at the pinnacle. Our thoughts are with you Jan. Love Kevin & Andree

Murray was a true phydicisn leader . I worked often with him in dealing with health system challenges. He was respected by all and often consulted. I will miss him as a friend and colleague. My condolences to his family.

Dr.Girotto was a wonderful surgeon and friend to all of us who worked with him. Between 1984 to 1989 in the ICU at TGH he worked miracles and enriched all our lives. What a pleasure to have worked with him.All the old ICU girls are calling each other and so sad for your family.

Dear Jan, Although Murray left Toronto some time ago, his mark on General Surgery and Critical Care was never lost....we still use Murrayisms.... my favourite being "When God puts his hand on your patient's shoulder it is time to take yours off...." Murray's enthusiasm for his craft, for life and for his family was a marvel to watch...sometimes he came into a room with such excitement it was as if his feet were not touching the ground...so many are better for having known him.... I know that I am...like the many whose lives he touched, I am profoundly saddened by his death and wish him Godspeed on this new journey...my deepest condolences to you, Katherine, Lindsay and Matthew. I first met Dr Murray when he was a resident and I was a med student at Queen's.....he was a great teacher and a great friend.....we both ended up in the London area after Kingston so I have kept in touch 30+ years.....He was a great friend when my first husband died in 1977.......I will never forget him for his kindness at that time.....We will all miss him so very much......my sympathies and love to his family

What sad news to hear of Murray passing. He taught many of us trauma at UWO and was an inspiration. It was an honor to have learned from him. Murray knew the challenges and difficulties of practicing emergency medicine in rural communities. He was so supportive and understanding. Hearing him on the other end of the phone line was such a relief when calling Trauma Team. He will be deeply missed...

I had the privileges of working with Murray on a number of health systems projects in the Southwest. He was a friend and trusted advisor, and someone that I admired personally and professionally. Dear Jan and Family my deepest sympathies. Being Murray's next door neighbor for the last 7 yrs. in Florida has been an experience. The first year he signed me up for the golf league which was a shock to me since I never played before, but being the great mentor that he was, I learned.We would sit in his garage in the morning having coffee together he called it his Italian gazebo. One day my dog was missing, when he finally came home there was a note under his collar, it read IT'S COCTAIL HOUR COME OVER .....MURRAY. That's the Murray I knew, and loved like a brother.I thank God for bring him into my life, I will truly miss him.

I was very sad to hear of Murray's passing. Such a loss for someone so young and talented. I enjoyed his company at Toronto General Hospital and always found him so cheerful and positive.
