Dr. Lawrence ‘Larry’ Noble Hurst

February 5, 1939 - October 24, 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Larry Hurst, at University Hospital, London, Ontario, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. He will be greatly missed by his loving partner, Lois Potts; his children: Heather (Colin), Julia, and Cameron (Maryam); his seven grandchildren; and his sister, Catherine.

Larry arrived in Canada with his family as a young boy and attended several schools in the Toronto area where he met his future wife, Sandy. He graduated from medical school at the University of Toronto in 1971, with a specialty in plastic surgery, and subsequently continued his studies at Stanford University.

Following his medical studies, Larry and Sandy moved to London, Ontario, where they raised their family. Larry was a highly respected surgeon at University Hospital for 35 years. He was renowned for his skill in microsurgery on hand abnormalities. Larry retired in 2005, but after Sandy’s death in 2010, he returned to work part-time for several years. He finally gave up the rigours of his career and devoted his attention to Lois and Lola, their beloved chihuahua.

In his final years, he endured a courageous fight with type I diabetes and the complications of dementia – the combination of which contributed to his death.

Friends are invited to join Larry’s family and share memories at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Diabetes Canada or to the Humane Society London & Middlesex would be appreciated.

Dear Heather and Family, you might not remember me but we went to Ryerson together. I am so very sorry to hear of the death of your Dad. Sending love and strength for the days to come.

Not only was he a skilled surgeon, but he was also a real gentleman. I enjoyed our time at University Hospital, even though we were in different departments. Larry was a good golfer, and we had some games at the Hunt Club where I usually left the course frustrated due to his ability.

My condolences to the family and friends of Dr Hurst. I was his patient over 40 yrs ago following a car accident which left me with a badly injured hand. Repeated surgeries through the end of high-school and a PT degree were required as he used his excellent surgical skill and care to give me a strong functioning hand! His greeting of "Hello Turkey" each visit, time given for explanations even debating surgical approaches gave me comfort and confidence. I fondly carry great affection and appreciation for his care and skill in giving me my hand back.

My sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Hurst. I have very special and fond memories of working with him at UH in the operating room as his scrub nurse. His confidence, calmness and kindness always made it a good day. Mariane Hossfeld
