Dr. Hugh Wallace Edgar
September 21, 2019
Passed peacefully at the age of 85, at Marian Villa, London, on Saturday, September 21st, 2019.
Hugh and five siblings were born to William and Alice Mae Edgar and raised on their loving and successful family farm near Ayr, Ontario. The family balanced chores, church and hard work with 4H club, visiting friends, going to dances and playing music.
He attended Reidsville Elementary school and he said if he was running late for school, he would ride his horse to school, then release the horse for home and start his school day.
After attending Galt Collegiate Institute, Hugh enrolled at The University of Western Ontario distinguishing himself academically and graduated from Medical School, as he would say, “with a great group of classmates” in 1958.
Hugh “Interned” at the Montreal General Hospital where he met the love of his life, Margaret Duncan, who was Nursing at the hospital at that time. They were married in Montreal and began their family before moving to London in 1963.
He joined London X-Ray Associates as a Radiologist where he would practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Their group also served the community hospitals of Strathroy, Exeter and Tillsonburg. Hugh often said that he really enjoyed working with staff and patients at the small-town hospitals in Ontario.
An avid golfer at the London Hunt Club, Hugh often enjoyed cards, conversation and a meal with friends after a game. He also relished family times at his summer cottage.
Dad was so proud of any accomplishment, small or extraordinary, of his children and grandchildren, showing a smile, hug and inquisitiveness. Those warm conversations will be missed by his family.
Hugh considered himself a lucky man, felt he had lived a good life and appreciated all the care he received. He missed our Mom, Margaret, dearly and we are very grateful that he is now at peace by her side.
Hugh is survived by his children: Cameron (Patricia), Heather (Paul) and Duncan (Veronica); and by his loving grandchildren Ian, Claire, Adam, Blaine, Daniel and William.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 1st, 2019 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where the funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at Woodland Cemetery.
In memory of Dr. Hugh Edgar, donations to St. Joseph’s Health Foundation or Oakridge Presbyterian Church would be appreciated.

Duncan ,Heather and Cameron. Please accept our condolences. Hugh was a long term friend. We both attended Galt Collegiate before meeting again at Western. Hugh was a very active member of the class, much involved in class activities. We kept in regular touch after graduation and he was active in the organization of our class reunions. Our family regularly notes that it was at the Edgar's cottage on Lake Huron that we watched the first moon landing. All the best. Pat and Bill
Dear Edgar family,i offer my condolences on the passing of your beloved father and grandfather,Dr.Edgar was the most down to earth gentleman that I have ever had the pleasure to meet
Dear Cameron, Heather and Duncan, Please accept our deepest condolences to the loss of your dear father. But you know he is now united with your mom Margaret. I am sure it was his wish to be with her. We will keep you in our prayers. Time is a great healer. Love Brian, Bebe and Michelle.
Dear Cam and Family, The Tribute to your Father perfectly describes the humble, grateful and professional gentleman I was privileged to care for at Marion Villa. Hugh had a genuine and gentle manner appreciating and sharing his past fondly. I will miss his thoughtfulness and our conversations. Through these we discovered some mutual connections from my home town, Windsor. Hugh was a friend to Dr. Bricker, a Windsor native who was also a life long friend of our neighbour there. Then to find out that your Dad graduated from Western in the same Class as Henry Zeiter, the brother of Dr. Mike who my Mom (also a Registered Nurse) worked for was incredible! My Mom now 86 was so excited when she heard this! It was Hugh's passion for his profession and his willingness to quietly share stories (although sometimes teary eyed) that this was all made possible. Thank you for sharing your incredible Dad with me. He adored you all. Please accept my sincere condolences. Nancy
Hugh was a loved and respected colleague at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was skilled and knowledgeable in what he did -- I could always rely on his findings. More than that, his gentle sense of humour and his unflappable nature made visits to the radiology department something I looked forward to. I am saddened to hear of his death.
Cam, Heather and Duncan My sincere condolences on the loss of your father. I have many fond memories of him and he was of course a close friend and partner of Dad. Our family had great respect and admiration for Hugh. We always referred to him as a true gentleman. I would have liked to attend the funeral and visitation but am away all next week. You are all in my thoughts and prayers Doug

Hugh was a great guy and wonderful classmate. Our class was a bright group of students, who became life-long friends and top Doctors and never forgot how to have a bit of fun. Hugh was the true spirit of our class.
