Dr. David Thomas Armstrong

We were saddened to hear of David's passing. Uncle David was an absolute beautiful person. He was genuine and caring, funny and smart. He had many stories about his childhood, and what it was like growing up on a small farm in Kinburn, Ontario. David was very proud of his roots, and we were proud of his accomplishments. It was an honour to have known David, and to call him my uncle.

My deepest sympathies to David's family. What a remarkable man he was and our research community is feeling a great loss. Those of us who have been trained, motivated, and inspired by him are so very grateful to have had that opportunity. He introduced me to the Society for the Study of Reproduction, where one could honour him best by following in his footsteps. During his visits to Ottawa, many of his former trainees and colleagues took great pleasure in getting together with him to resurrect countless funny memories of the rather unorthodox methods that sometimes followed his inspired ideas. He will be sorely missed.

It is a sad news indeed for all reproductive biologists around the world who work on ovarian biology. Dr. David Armstrong was a pioneering scientist whose contribution to ovarian biology cannot be overstated. I learned a lot from his research and have tremendous respect for him. My sincere condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences to David's family. As one of his many former trainees, I am very grateful to have known and worked with him. He has contributed greatly to our current careers and he will be missed.

I write to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to David's family. Dave was a role model and hero of mine growing up in science, and I had the pleasure to meet and talk with him about my research at SSR . I also had the pleasure of working closely with him in organizing the SSR Meeting when it was held in London. I was most impressed with his sharp mind and quiet and humble manner. He will be greatly missed.

Those of us who interacted directly with Dave cherish memories of his personal contributions to family and colleagues. In addition, professionally, Dave will be remembered for his pioneering and innovative science. Much of his research was enabled by his ability to identify and adopt innovative methods from related sciences to push back the frontiers of his own work. His legacy of new knowledge is a monument to his professional life.

Dave will live on, in the lives of those whom he trained and inspired. He lived and breathed reproductive endocrinology, his published works revealing a rich diversity of interests, with emphasis upon ovarian function and biochemical basis of gonadotropin hormone actions. And he was a dear friend.

Our sincere condolences to Dave's family as well as to many grieving friends. Dave was a remarkable man who enjoyed life to the fullest and we have been privileged to know him. He was a good friend and mentor, who helped us a lot at the start of our careers, and will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear of Daves passing . Dave and I were classmates in Year 51 OAC we both serve red in the Ag.Rep service of the Ont Dept of Agriculture .Dav e was a brilliant student and an excellent judge of Dairy cattle he was on the winning team at the Chicago Fair. So very san to hear Dave's passing, and I express my deepest sympathy to Dave's Family. He will be sorely missed by his extended family - Who he trained and mentored with passion and exuberance. I was lucky to be one of them and the times I spent with him are one of the best in my life so far. There are so many of us in this field that are impacted by his towering personality and will be remembered for ever.

My condolences to David's family and friends. I was honoured to meet him in Milan in '95, sharing science and ideas during his sabbatical leave. I was touched by his inspiration, brightness and his sincere friendship. He will be greatly missed.

I am so very sorry to hear of David's death. I worked for David Armstrong from 1974 until he retired from Western and then we corresponded through the Adelaide years. Whether in the lab, or wrestling sheep in the field or sailing Lake Huron he was a dear friend and fascinating person. Not only was he constantly searching to understand how reproductive biology works but also how we can use those discoveries. He leaves a legacy of knowledge, research tools and scientists that he mentored which is nothing short of outstanding. No question, it's a loss. Sending my sincere sympathy.

We will cherish the memories we had with Uncle David. He was always so genuinely interested in what we were doing. We always looked forward to his visits and enjoyed his company at the farm and cottage. He was a true Armstrong if every sense, passionate, funny, smart yet humble, a true gentleman. He will be forever in our hearts.

My most sincere condolences to Dr. Armstrong's family. I count myself very lucky to have worked with him for 17 years. His indomitable spirit and fierce intelligence shaped not only the world of science but also a large contingent of scientists that will pass on his legacy.

We offer our sincere condolences to Dave's family and his close friends. I worked both with and for Dave for several years. Dave has made an enormous contribution to ruminant livestock worldwide. Dave's knowledge of livestock was much broader than just reproduction and he was a master at imparting practical knowledge as well as scientific information. I know he was respected in many countries and he was looked upon as a giant in his field. It was a great pleasure and honour to have a relationship with him. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences to Dave's family and many friends. He was a brilliant scientist and an inspirational mentor or colleague for many of us. His contributions to reproductive biology are immense and will continue to influence the field for generations through his copious and widely read publications and his many trainees and their students. Dave also leaves us with many fond memories of his leadership, friendship, and sailing!

I like to think that beyond the knowing of those who grieve, the soul makes a safe passage to a new and brighter life. I will miss the cousin who inspired many in his life. My father, Douglas Fox, David's first cousin, was always so proud of his accomplishments and although distance and age preempted frequent visits, always held a special place in his heart for David. In tribute to a generation that held family dear, I will always encourage a connection between future generations. There are now third and fourth cousins who have joined the family who can be proud of the legacy that Dr. David Armstrong left behind. And when they meet, I'm sure they will say - how are we related again? Our love and prayers to our Canadian family at this difficult time

David was a strong and supportive mentor to us in Adelaide and was always humble and willing to support younger scientists and clinicians. His partnership with Catherine was a joy to behold and their house was always open. He helped make us strong in Adelaide and contributed to the founding and success of the Robinson Research Institute.

I write in sincere condolence to Dave's family. He was one of my heroes and a role model, partly because of his splendid scientific mind and achievements. But but also because he was without posture or artifice, he was someone with whom everyone could talk science and ideas, he was always willing to collaborate and share. His colleagues in Australia called him "the living legend", and with this I agree. He will be missed.

One word to describe him: He is a gem.

My sincere condolences to the family of David Armstrong. I interacted with David at scientific meetings and during two different visits to Australia. He will be remembered by me as an outstanding comparative reproductive biologist and colleague who had great depth of knowledge and shared it freely with all with whom he interacted.

I came to know him soon after I moved from McGill to Western in 1983 to find in him a great friend and a great role model working in the field of Reproduction. His legacy in science will will remain with a generation of scientists he trained, and many others who crossed his path. David will be missed by many of us here and abroad.

As a graduate student at Madison, WI (1959-64), Dave's research was already highly respected. Upon, meeting him a few years later at a meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, I quickly realized that he was as fine a person as was the quality of his research. I am honored to have known him.

David will be truly missed and honored by all who knew him for his inspiration, achievements, and friendship. His contributions to the Society for the Study of Reproduction opened doors for present and future generations of reproductive biologists. He established a culture of both cutting edge science and a spirit of camaraderie.

With condolences to the family of David Armstrong and the scientific community, a true legend has passed on. Yet his legend will continue in the science and hearts of those who have had the pleasure to know and work with David as well as his league of trainees.
