February 1, 2018

At St. Joseph’s Hospice, London on Thursday, February 1st, 2018, Mr. Don Russell, of Strathroy, in his 82nd year. Born April 30, 1936 in Strathroy. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Leila Russell; daughters, Debbie Taylor and Wendy Wise, as well as their families: sons-in-law Mark Taylor and Mark Wise; grandchildren: Brittany Taylor, Tory Taylor, Hayden Wise and Marisa Wise. Predeceased by his brothers, John Russell and Alfred Russell. Don was a compassionate elementary school teacher with the London Board of Education for 30 years. He was also very involved with Camp Hermosa, Westview Baptist Church, Strathroy Chorale, Educational Choir and Castle Club. A member of the Kiwanis Club of Middlesex for 20 years, Don held various positions including secretary, President, Lieutenant-Governor, as well as many volunteering activities. One of his favourite volunteer positions was helping in the critical care unit at Victoria Hospital, which he did for 20 years. A very positive person who brought a smile to everyone he met, Don had a love of travel, singing and books. He was very devoted to his family and gave them his unconditional love. We would like to thank all the support staff from CCAC who came in and helped Don while he lived at home in Seasons Retirement Residence as well as all the staff and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospice. A memorial service will be conducted at WESTVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH, 1000 Wonderland Road South, London on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Phil Butler officiating. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Don are asked to consider Camp Hermosa, Westview Baptist Church or St. Joseph’s Hospice, London.

Dear Leila & Family, Our sympathy goes out to you at this time of loss. We have great memories of our years serving together on the MLA executive for BYPU back in the early 60s, and more recently seeing and chatting with Don at Camp Hermosa golf days. How he loved seeking out donations for the prize table for that event. We will always remember his big smile and hearty laugh.

~ Bob & Lenora Jamieson

We were sorry to read of Don's passing. I remember the years Don and I worked together at school. He was a committed teacher who looked out for the needs of his students with a positive attitude and big smile. He saw the bright side of things and we'll always remember that hearty laugh. Of course Joan also remembers Don as a parent when she taught Debbie at Northbrae. Our thoughts and prayers are with your whole family at this difficult time.

My sympathy to you in the loss of Don. I have happy memories of you both when my late husband (Laverne) and I attended Castle Club. It was a friendly happy group and I thank you for being a part of that. Thinking of you and your family at this sad time. Shirley Cobban

Mr Russell taught my brothers & I at Victoria P.S. A very knowledgeable, considerate teacher. I looked forward to seeing his smile in the fall at the Western Fair. Truly a "Gentle Giant" of a man. Heartfelt condolences to the Russell family from the Wilkinson Boys.

To the Family: Very sorry for your loss. It is a time like this that we can turn to the comforting words found in the Holy Bible, at Daniel 12:2, " And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake..." how strengthening that promise is, our love ones can live again! That promise is also confirmed at Acts 24:15, " ... there shall be a resurrection of the dead..."
