Daniel Dodd McInnes

December 25, 2022

It is with profound sadness that the family of Daniel Dodd McInnes announces his sudden passing over Christmas at the home he loved in London, Ontario. His patience, integrity and fortitude will forever remain a guiding force for his family. His physical presence, subtle guidance and support will be sorely missed by his children Sylvia (Alan), Cory (Will), Bryan, and Rob (Kim). Grandpa Dan’s sense of fun, adventure, and sharp wit will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Sean (Carolyn), Erynn (James), Alexander, Daniel, Innes (Cara), Nick, and Eli (Erin). He was the proud great-grandfather of Sebastian and Georgia. Dan is also survived by his brothers Bill (Marlene) and Mac (Linda). Dan is predeceased by his first wife, Marion (née Morrison), his second wife Millie (née Barron), his daughter Karen Hay, and his parents Thelma and Kenneth.

Dan was born in Kenora in 1939 and, aside from a few mischievous activities, generally proved a good example and general protector to his younger brothers Bill and Mac. He joined the Armories in his teenage years, acquiring a large tattoo (much to his mother’s chagrin!) which guided him under his suit sleeves. He worked at his father’s moving business and attended United College, graduating top of the class. He then chose to pursue a career as an electrician at Bell Canada. An avid swimmer and lifeguard, he enjoyed boating, camping, aquaplaning and skiing in Kenora and later in Fort Frances. After raising two children on his own for five years, he was introduced to Millie (through their children). They married soon after in 1978, creating a diverse family of seven, knit together well through their strength as partners. In 1980, they relocated to London, Ontario where Dan moved into a management position with Bell. He continued to enjoy sports through swimming, baseball, CURLING or armchair coaching. Dan enjoyed many travels with Millie (including two World Curling Championships), theatre (especially musicals) and entertaining in their backyard oasis. The couple also enjoyed boating through the Trent Canal system and many shun-piking excursions around London. Dan’s community benefited from his many contributions such as Sunday School Teacher and Elder, Curling instructor for both children and adults, and Silver Broom volunteer. He was a supporter of many charities and had regularly scheduled appointments at Canada Blood Services, making almost 200 donations.

To know him was to respect him, and the family invites friends and family to join them in a Celebration of Dan’s Life to be held on May 20, 2023 at the London Curling Club at 377 Lyle Street, London from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Those wishing to donate in memory of Dan are asked to consider The London Curling Club or a charity of your choice. Alternatively, the family invites you to get a good strong coffee and sit down and watch a game in Dan’s memory. Loves ya Dad, Dan, brother, Grandpa, uncle, friend, neighbour. Smooth sailing skip/per.

To Dan's Family. From Kenneth & Lois Barron. Kenneth was a nephew of Dan's through his marriage to Millie. We are offering our profound sympathy to each of you in your loss of Uncle Dan. We just found Uncle Dan's obituary by accident this afternoon. We are so sorry to learn of his passing. We always enjoyed going to visit he and Aunt Millie at their home in London and have often thought of him since her passing. Dan was a very friendly, hospitable Uncle and Ken enjoyed talking about curling and hockey with him. We always felt so welcome and comfortable in Uncle Dan and Aunt Millie's home. With our love, Lois & Ken

~ Kenneth Barron

Sorry to hear of Dan's passing. Thank you for sending the obituary to the Kenora paper. We have very fond memories of times together with Dan while he lived in Kenora. Thinking of you. Dawn Skeavington and family
