Chung “Eric” Lai
January 23, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Chung “Eric” Lai, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 74. Eric was the beloved husband of Amy, loving father of Matthew and Maggie (Lawrence Cai), cherished grandfather of Charlotte and Theodore, caring brother of Steven and Hoi, and friend to many.
Eric was born in China and moved to Hong Kong in his childhood. In 1994, he made the life-changing decision to immigrate to Canada with his family. With a vision for a better future for his family, Eric embraced the challenges of a new country, culture, and language, ensuring his family had every opportunity to succeed. His bravery and sacrifices changed the course of their lives, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
For the 30 years that he lived in London, Ontario, Eric enjoyed playing soccer in many parks across the city. Even in his later years, he continued to practice daily with soccer balls in the parks in the Hyde Park Community. He was likely the oldest active soccer enthusiast in London, and many in the community would remember spotting him playing the sport he loved so dearly.
Eric will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His generosity, courage, and infectious smile will continue to inspire those who carry his memory.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, followed by a Buddhist ritual service at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the London Health Sciences Foundation in Eric’s honor.

Maggie and Family, we are so sorry for your loss. Uncle was such a kind, dedicated and admirable man. I wish I had the chance to know him longer but even the little interaction we’ve had has made a long lasting impression on me. I aspire to be as happy, active and fit as him at that age. I will always remind myself and my kids that, “Charlotte’s gong gong at the age of 74 would carry a heavy bag of soccer balls all by himself to the park and practice in the middle of the afternoon during hot summer days.” Age has no limits and if he can do it, so can we. I hope you will pass on the great memories to your kids and reminisce with Auntie, the years of happiness and companionship they experienced together. Know that he loved you very much and he would want you to remember to take care of yourself first and foremost. Our thoughts are with you always and we’re only a phone call, text message or 30 second drive away. <3

In Loving Memory of Mr Eric Lai With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, I mourn the passing of my beloved uncle and guardian, Mr. Eric Lai. Through my tears, I reflect on the life of this remarkable man who embodied the true essence of a gentleman in every way. Uncle Eric's noble character manifested in every role he assumed: a devoted son who honoured his mother, a loving husband who cherished his wife, and a dedicated father who nurtured his children with unwavering care. His home was a sanctuary of warmth and guidance, where he opened his heart to many children, myself included, serving as our guardian and shaping our lives with his wisdom and compassion. The years spent under Uncle Eric and Auntie Amy's roof were among the happiest of my memories in London. As an avid football player, he carried himself with the discipline and grace of a professional athlete, qualities that permeated every aspect of his life. His rare combination of virtues – self-discipline, benevolence, courage, and righteousness – was complemented by his athletic physique and refined sensibilities. He was a loyal friend, a kind neighbour, and a helpful colleague who touched countless lives with his warmth and generosity. His sudden departure leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts. While my tears flow and my heart aches with grief, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, who bear the heaviest burden of this profound loss. To honour his legacy of nurturing and protecting children, I have donated to Save the Children in Uncle Eric's honour, ensuring that his spirit of caring for young lives continues. May his noble soul rest in eternal peace. Though Uncle Eric has left us in body, he will live forever in our cherished memories – a beacon of virtue whose light continues to guide those fortunate enough to have known him.
