Charles ‘Grant’ MacDougall

February 6, 2022

It is with great regret and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charles ‘Grant’ MacDougall, surrounded by, and in the arms of his family, on Sunday, February 6, 2022.

Grant had a sense of humour, wit, and a fun loving character that was unmatched. A hard working RCMP officer for over 40 years. He valued his family above all else and was an incredible friend and neighbour. He was kind and compassionate to all who were lucky enough to cross his path. Grant was a proud Cape Bretoner, a talented athlete who loved golf, hockey, fastball, as well as music.

Grant was loved deeply and will be missed greatly by many. Grant is survived by his wife Dianna (Sophocleous) – high school sweethearts who have been married for 42 years. Proud children: Grant (Katherine), Ashley (Justin), Derek (Joel); adored grandchildren: Léa, Callum, Lachlan, Brooklyn; mother Hazel; siblings Ann Louise (Harvey), Cathy (Don), Robbie (Karen), Donna (Norman), Craig, and a community of family and close friends. Predeceased by his father Robert MacDougall. Grant’s family are honouring his wishes of a close family ceremony. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Grant are asked to consider Cystic Fibrosis Canada or the London Regional Cancer Program.

“I’ll be the guy that looks like me.”

Dianna, you know well that Grant was a central figure in London. Quite the character, I can hardly think of anyone who wasn't touched by his humour and antics. Underneath all of that was a BIG heart. I too learned from his experience. He will be remembered with fondness. - Steve Gorman

Dianna and family I am so sorry for your loss. What a great human being Grant was and so proud to say I know him. When I moved in beside him and Dianna they were the best neighbours. Grant and I would joke about who had the nicest lawn and we would play darts in my garage sipping on cold beverages. I know you will all miss him dearly but keep him in your heart and remember all the wonderful memories. RIP buddy. They will know you in heaven because you will be the guy that looks like you.

One of my favorite memories is from a Christmas eve party at Ann Louise's.  Since we're both from "away", I hadn't seen Uncle Grant in years. And I hadn't seen him in action -  interacting with other MacDougalls-  in many, many years.  After maybe 20-30 mins of Grant and Robbie trading quips and cracking jokes, I felt this deep sense of family/connection. Like "Wow, I rarely see these guys and had almost forgotten what they were like. But sitting here, listening to them, I am definitely related to these two wise-guys."  Now, living alone in Toronto, I almost never feel that familial connection.   So I'm very grateful to Uncle Grant for helping me feel it then. After that night, I made the effort to occasionally get down to London to visit them.  I discovered that the whole crew of Grant, Dianna, Christopher Grant, Ashley, and Derek (plus their sig others) are lovely, lovely people with a great family bond. It must be  testament to Grant and Dianna being wonderful role models, parents, and friends and just, overall, the kind of people you'd want in your life.

~ Rob Huntington

I was very sad to see this, my condolences to you Dianna and your family. Wishing you courage, strength, and lots of love at this time of sorrow. My heart goes out to you at this very difficult time. Sending you lots of hugs Dianna.

My deepest condolences to the family upon hearing the sad news of Grant's passing. As your previous family physician, I got to know everybody in the family quite well over the last 30+ years. We were more like family than we were on a patient-doctor basis. He was always cheerful and friendly and would "go through the wall" for you. I will dearly miss him. Be strong Dianna. You have the best children around you and you will never be alone. I will be in touch when you are less busy.

~ Albert Mok

Dear sister & family: We share in your grief. It's so hard to believe. We are heart broken. Grant was such a dedicated & loving husband, father & Grandfather (Co Co). You, the children & grandbabies were his world. He was also the best big brother to Earl & I. He was so easy to talk with, made us laugh & always offered the best advice. He supported our dreams & was always such an important part of our lives. We loved when you both would come home to C.B. He'd help with meal prep; the best at barbecuing! How we, especially Kalyn, loved watching him twizzle a chicken wing in his mouth & magically make the chicken disappear! Lol. We always had so much fun together. He loved to laugh, share a joke, enjoyed music & his dance moves were only second to yours Dianna. Lol. Grant, you are truly #1 to "Er" & I! We refuse to go through life without you. Grant, you will always hold a special place in our hearts. We will keep your spirit alive in the wonderful memories we shared & the songs we sing. Grant, you will be "Out on the Mira" with us forever. We send our love to you Dianna, children & precious grandchildren. We can't wait to give you all a big hug. We love & miss you so much. We send heartfelt condolences to Grant's Mom and his siblings. Our thoughts & prayers are with you all. Love, Melina & Earl

I am truly sorry to find that Grant has passed away. I first met Grant when I was transferred to Sarnia in 1983, when he immediately gave me the nickname “Emma” which stuck with me for the rest of my time in the force. Grant was one of the most friendly and “down to earth “ person, I have ever met. Grant could always see the funny side of life and you never knew what he might say, but you knew it would be “witty! Grant you will be missed dearly. Joe Peel

~ Joe Peel

I only met Grant once, but sometimes even once makes an indelible impression. The occasion was a visit with Dianna to my mother who was at the end of her final hospital stay. She loved company, though, and was thrilled to meet Grant after hearing about him so often when she was still at home and Dianna helped her out with her evening meds schedule. And, he did not disappoint. Grant’s gentle teasing and insistence that Mom needed male companionship was capped off when he presented her with a squishy brown bear and insisted that his name was Fred. Lots of laughter … a generous spirit … and in the 15+ years since, a wonderful memory. Dianna, I am so sad for the loss you, your children and other family members and friends are experiencing. I know that no one could have given Grant a more comforting shoulder to lean on than you. Now it’s your turn to lean on others during these difficult days. Tons of Hugs.
