Bryan Anthony

February 8, 2022

Peacefully at University Hospital, Bryan Anthony passed away in his 90th year on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Beloved husband of the late Jane (Kastelein) (2020). Bryan is survived by his daughters Christine, her son Michael, and Joan all of London, England. Stepfather of the late John Kastelein, Arthur Kastelein (Laura) and step-grandfather of Carson and Abbey.

Bryan joined the London Police Service in 1966, after serving with the London Metropolitan Police and gained valuable experience as a dog handler and trainer. Bryan was instrumental along with Deputy Doug Hogg in establishing the first municipal canine unit in Ontario. On July 2, 1972, the canine patrol section under the command of Sgt. Anthony became an active unit with the department and this year will celebrate 50 stellar years of service.

Bryan loved many things in life – He was a teacher of bird carving, enjoyed painting and making furniture, was a prolific reader, a current events enthusiast, an expert in all things Winston Churchill and loved anything to do with the military and politics. He will be missed by his dear friend Rick.

A heartfelt thank you to the Richmond Woods Retirement Residence staff for their exceptional care and also to the 4th-floor medical team at University Hospital.

At Bryan’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or memorial service. Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Bryan are asked to consider the Sunshine Foundation of Canada.

David Potts was on the force from 1971 and loved dogs but never was able to make it to k9. I took my German Shepherd to your training at your home and was able to use hand controls by the end of the course. I never met such a gentleman, stern but gentle to both the canine and the handler. Brian will be remembered always with special thoughts.

July 21, 1969, I joined the London Police Force, and I was fortunate to have Bryan Anthony as my training officer for six weeks. As anyone that knows Bryan Anthony, he puts his heart and soul into being the best officer he can be. I certainly learned he was intelligent, and was focused on giving me a good start as a Constable. His common-sense was an asset to me, as his words of wisdom have never left me. For instance, " Wear your uniform with pride, and treat everyone, with respect as you are representing our London Police Department." Another "Career Shaker" from Bryan, "Rick if you screwed up, that means your training officer, let you down." My long-time loyal friend of 52 years, became a "special friend to myself and my family." In closing, Sergeant Bryan Anthony was a very proud person, and without question, his permanent legacy is being the founder of the London Police K-9 unit, which was Ontario's first municipal K-9 Unit and became operational November 12, 1972. His determination and knowledge, along with the assistance of Deputy/Chief Doug Hogg was the crowning of Sergeant Bryan Anthony's Police career. He was looking forward to attending the 50th celebration of the London Police K-9 unit this coming spring, but I'm sure he will be remembered by many of us. "Thanks Bryan, for all those memories. Bryan was my sergeant for a period of time in the 1980s when I was a young Constable. I learned a lot from him and part of his legacy will be the country’s best K9 Unit. RIP Sarge.

My deepest condolences to Bryan's family. Bryan was such a kind and caring person. I enjoyed our early morning conversations when I came into work. He was always up early to get the paper and keeping me up to date on the daily news. He sure was an inspiration and will be dearly missed!

Condolences to Bryan's family. What a special man he was, such a gentleman, I so enjoyed our chats together. I loved watching how he was so protective of Jane, how he loved painting and his paintings were so beautiful. Prayers to you all at this difficult time, I'm thankful I had an opportunity to get to know him and Jane when I was working at Richmond Woods.

To Bryan's Family, Please accept my sympathy in the loss of your Dad (and) Mum as I did not realize she had passed away. Bryan and Jane used to travel with Ilderton Tours and I would often see them when they came in to the office to book for and or to pay for a trip. They were a lovely couple and I just loved Bryan's accent. Treasure you memories of them both and hold them close to your heart where they will always remain and remember that LOVE never dies. RIP. Sincerely, Linda Fox
