Bonnie Hawlik

June 7, 2024

It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Bonnie Hawlik on June 7th at Victoria Hospital; London, Ontario. As in life, she was surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, Joseph and their beloved sons Christopher (Ashley) and Cameron (Mandy); “Nina” to her grandchildren Logan, Noah, London, Kieran, and Nicole; Aunt to Sarah, Samantha, Jason, Michael, Steve and Scott; Sister to Trudy, and the late Beverly (Lynn) and stepmother to Jami. She was a cherished friend and mentor to many.

Born and raised in Meaford, Ontario, Bonnie channeled her early interest in health and nutrition to her education at Ryerson University. From there she began a lifelong teaching career, in family studies and nutrition, which she coupled with her incomparable design, style and creative seamstress talents. Her career choice was perfect and she was devoted in her work. Eventually Bonnie’s teaching years were put on pause as she focused on family responsibilities but she returned to the profession in 2004, most recently at A. B. Lucas Secondary School in London. Her ability to guide and inspire students earned her multiple awards including the prestigious Excellence in Education Award.

While family and friends will attest to Bonnie’s passion for gourmet cooking, hosting awesome parties with elaborate décor and menus, gardening and her enviable skill in fashioning intricate needlework, the love of her life was, and remained for 44 years, her husband Joseph.  The two met in Toronto but chose to make London their home and, once a part of the community, together they were a formidable team. Bonnie became an active and unstoppable volunteer. Her activities and support crossed a gamut of charities and causes. Everything from school events to community and personal philanthropic interests. Always ready to roll up her sleeves Bonnie brought an enthusiasm and originality to countless events and organizations including the Alan Thicke Centre for Juvenile Diabetes, London Health Sciences Country Classic Auction, Museum London, Eldon House and the Canada Summer Games 2001. At the time of her passing Bonnie was a board member for the Hardy Geddes Foundation.  Her ability to lead often put her at the head of a challenge and her team of volunteers will always remember the joy in hand-tying over 1,500 flower bouquets that were presented to all the medal winners at the Canada Summer Games. It was a collective labour of love.

Our family is deeply grateful to Dr. Kuruvilla & Dr. Qu of The Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre, and all the health care providers and nurses involved in her care, especially the palliative care team at Victoria Hospital. Continuing her life-long commitment to teaching, Bonnie donated her body to research.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no formal service. A Celebration of Life will take place at the London Hunt and Country Club, on July 11, 2024 from 1-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the London Health Sciences Foundation in support of the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre or the Hardy Geddes Foundation.

It doesn't seem possible; such a vibrant spirit. Although we have not seen each other for a long time, I treasure the times were were together. What a lovely life. To Joe and thje family, my condolences.

My deepest condolences to Bonnie’s family. I knew Bonnie through her work on costumes at A.B. Lucas S.S.. we worked together on several dramas and musicals, notably MacBeth in 2014|2015. After retiring, I worked again with Bonnie on several more productions. We shared many laughs, and I appreciated her positive attitude and her willingness to tackle even the seemingly impossible designs. I will sorely miss my “partner in crime”.

My condolences to Joe and the entire family. Bonnie was an inspiration to those of us involved in having strong neighbourhood associations in London. She made a difference and for that she will not be forgotten.

So very sorry to hear of Bonnie's passing. I remember her mostly for her strong conviction of making London the best city it could be. Sending prayers for strength and courage.

To Joe, Chris, Cam and family, we’re so sorry for your loss. Bonnie was a a great friend to my mom and I’d recently dropped off a picture of their needlepoint group to her and had a visit. We’re thinking of you all.
