Bing Fan Yip

December 1, 1941 - April 24, 2024

On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, surrounded by his family, Bing passed away in peace and comfort at the age of 82 in London, Ontario.

Bing was born on December 1, 1941 in Toisan, Kwang Tung province, China. At age 13, he moved to Hong Kong and completed his Form 5 (High School Graduation) at Sung Chun College. In 1963, he and his mother immigrated to Canada where they were reunited with his grandfather, Tom Yip. Bing worked at his grandfather’s store, BC Fruits, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan until 1968, when he and other family members took over an existing dry cleaning business called Crescent Cleaners. Soon after, they started an ice cream store and confectionary in Moose Jaw called Snow Hut. The business flourished and eventually expanded to include a self-serve car wash and laundromat, and the store became a popular fixture in the community. In 2003, Snow Hut was sold to a new owner and Bing began his retirement, eventually moving to London, Ontario in 2005.

Bing was survived by his wife of 52 years, Christine, and their children Grace (Andrew), Paul (Mary) and William (Alana), grandchildren Zoë, Charlotte, Isla, and Felix, and his siblings Myrna (Gale), Barry (Ada), and May, and many beloved nephews, nieces and in-laws. He was predeceased by his brothers Bing See and Kai (Catherine, also deceased).

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, PSWs, and all the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice and Victoria Hospital (nephrology) for the excellent care he received. The family would also like to thank Dr. Louise Moist for her exemplary care and compassion while Bing was her patient.

A private memorial service will be held at Westview Funeral Chapel, with cremation to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation are asked to consider St. Joseph’s Hospice in London (https://www.sjhospicelondon.com/donate-now).

Bing and family were not only an important part of the Moose Jaw Chinese community but was well-liked and so appreciated in the Moose Jaw community. Snow Hut and Bing were an important part of growing up in Moose Jaw. We always were given the warmest, joyous welcome. I am so glad Bing was able to spend time with family in retirement. Thoughts and prayers are with Christine, Grace, Paul and William.

Bing was our next door neighbour for many years and a very pleasant neighbour at that. We had some interesting times dealing with the snow that would blow in from the nearby park. RIP dear former neighbour and sincere condolences to the family.

I met Bing when I worked at Slater and York in 1968 and Bing was at Crescent Cleaners in Moose Jaw. He alway enjoyed their Christmas Party at The cleaners! I also enjoyed many Snow Hut Ice cream cones when Bing worked there. RIP Bing🙏

Bing was just the greatest man I have ever dealt with. We knew each other from Crescent Cleaners where we used to get our dry cleaning and clothes alterations for Slater & York. He was always a funny guy and loved to joke with everyone. He always liked to show extra finger to the children especially at the Snow Hut. Truly a Great man, you will always be in my heart Bing.

Grace and family: Sincere condolences on the passing of your dad, Bing. Ron and I got to know him so well when we lived just a few streets away from the Snow Hut. While Ron did the laundry, he also enjoyed the many flavours of ice cream available during the wash cycle. We were so honoured to be invited to your wedding and he continued to keep us informed about your life in Ontario. We missed him when he moved to be closer to you and your family. We still visit the Snow Hut for my chocolate float and to find chocolate popsicles in the cooler. We saw Gale in February at the Chinese New Year's celebration at the Uptown. Please share our best wishes with the rest of your family. Your memories will keep Bing alive in your hearts. From Ron and Joyce Walter 1067 Third Ave. N. W., Moose Jaw, Sk. S6H 3T8

My sincere condolences to Bing's family. I was moved to see he had passed away, I'm so grateful that I heard about Bing's passing thru the Moose Jaw grapevine. As so many others have said, memories of our visits to the Snow Hut for icecream are some of my fondest of growing up in Moose Jaw. A popular fixture in the community is a very apt description. Rest in peace Bing.

I grew up in Moose Jaw. We lived about a half a block away from the Snow Hut. I have very fond memories of Bing growing up. Later in life after I moved away I would get back to MJ and from time to time I would stop at the Snow Hut for some ice cream. Bing always called me by name and shook my hand. Rest in peace old friend

My deepest condolences to all of Bing’s family. I first met Bing at BC Fruit where my family did their grocery shopping. Bing, along with the rest of the ‘family’ at BC Fruit, made wonderful memories that I’ve carried with me all through my life. Then the Snow Hut was just a continuation of those wonderful memories. Bing left a special mark on the lives of everyone he encountered - all of them good. I know Bing will be greatly missed.

~ Connie Ashworth (nee Fysh)

Please accept my condolences. Bing was integral in making the day of every South Hill kid in Moose Jaw. When Dad would stop the car at Snow Hut it was sure to be a real treat. He made the best milkshakes ever and was always so cheerful and happy. Rest in Peace.
