Passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the age of 79 after a 2 year struggle with Lewy Body dementia. Born in Bath, daughter of the late Dr. John Roberts and the late Eleanor (Erskine) O’Neill, devoted wife of the late Dr. Edward Anthony (Tony) Reid-Smith (2005), Bernie is survived by her sons Dr. Richard Reid-Smith and David Reid-Smith; her daughter-in-law Dr. Susan Sabatini and grandchildren Bethany and Matthew Reid-Smith. Also survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret O’Neill, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Predeceased by her sister Dr. Patricia Williamson (O’Neill) and brother Dr. Michael O’Neill, both of England. Bernie graduated from Trinity College, University of Dublin in 1961 with a bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery and practised medicine in Dublin and Glasgow. She emigrated to Canada in 1965 with Tony and Richard, and devoted the rest of her life to her family, raising her sons and caring for her husband during his long illness and her mother late in her life. In 1986 she started a 13 year career in human resources at Victoria Hospital, London, retiring in 1999. Thanks to the PSWs and to Christine Naylor for supporting Bernie at home, and to the nurses and staff of the Stone Lodge Retirement Home and the Elliott Nursing Home in Guelph for their excellent care. Visitation will be held at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Friday, July 18, 2014 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., with prayers at 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at HOLY FAMILY PARISH, 777 Valetta Street, London, on Saturday July 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to SickKids or WWF Canada. Richard and David, You're in my thoughts. I have so many fond memories of your mum and dad. You guys were all a huge part of my childhood. Your mum was a really strong woman.
