Augusto Marmai

July 7, 2011

On July 7th, 2011, Augusto “Gus” Marmai passed away peacefully, at the age of 61.

Throughout his entire journey, Gus had an enviable spark for life, and an endless spirit for learning and enjoying new things. He truly made the most of everything, in all his worldwide adventures, and through all the stories he shared with his many friends and family. Dear, loving husband of Eleda; cherished father of Kristine and her husband Nate, Lawrence and his wife Kristin; loving grandfather of Sidney. Beloved brother of Maria, Gilda, Angela, Duilio and Patrizia. Gus will sincerely be missed, but will not be forgotten. He would encourage you to share your favorite “Gus” story with a friend, over a glass of red wine or Grand Marnier.

My sincere condolences to all of Gus' friends and family. I had the pleasure of meeting Gus in my many trips to Wuhan over the past couple of years and of course, playing golf. As you all know, he was a wonderful guy and a pleasure to be around. We will miss him dearly. Gus as well as you all, are in my thoughts and prayers... Take care. Dennis Felchner, USA.

'Class Act' - how does one describe that - simple... Gus Marmai... yesterday was a sad day but, a joyous day as well - since Gus is no longer suffering and is now at peace and in a better place... glad we got to see Gus (and Eleda) in April and; he had a very pragmatic view on things... Think of all the great times with Gus and, that will make you smile and get you through the moment... Rest assured, Gus is looking down on us all, who knew him - with his dry wit and saying... you 'Bastards' better not fuss over me - BUT, do lift a Grand Marnier in my honor... A true friend, who was taken from us all too soon... Eleda, Kristine and Lawrence - take solace in knowing that your husband, friend, father, advisor will continue to guide you... Time will help heal your loss... We are all here for you guys - around the world, just a phone call away... i am from egypt

Our deepest sympathies Eleda, Lawrence, Kristine and your families. I can't imagine the pain, but I can have faith and hope for you and your family during this time. Our prayers and thoughts are with you! It was a shock to see the obit in our local paper. The time your family spent in Melville was a great asset to the community. We are thankful for the opportunity to have met you, Gus, Kristine and Lawerence. sincerest regards, Debbie and Glenn

My thoughts are with Gus's family. Gus meant much to me over the years especially the time we spent together at Babcock & Wilcox. I will remember the many times he played jokes on me and my staff when I was in charge of Health & Safety. I also worked for many years with Gus in the Tube Shop. I will have very fond memories of him and will miss his daily e-mailed jokes which he was sending right up to the end. I'll miss you Gus!

I would like to send warm thoughts to Eleda, Kristine, Lawrence and their families. I have many fond memories of Gus going way back to my childhood. He was the kind of person you were were always happy to see and constantly on guard because you never knew what he was going to do next. He was a kind, positive and overall happy go lucky kind of man. You were very lucky to have him in your life. I wish all of you love. Never stop sharing his stories because that will keep his memory alive. Afterall he did work very hard planning the perfect jokes and pranks. He always had a way to make you smile and loved the look on your face when you could never find your shoes because he had carefully hid them. He will be deeply missed.

On behalf of all the teams here at the Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan, I wish to express our sincere sympathy for the loss of Gus. My teams will remember Gus as an absolutely wonderful guest, friendly, always happy with lots of jokes and gimmicks. He was here so often that he was treated as one of our own family member. After he had to go back to Canada for treatment he was missed but his presence was still felt. I myself remember Gus not only as a valuable guest, but more as a great guy and a friend with whom I had the pleasure of enjoying many glasses of red wine while sharing jokes and stories. My time with him on the golf course was one big laugh. Gus will certainly be missed greatly amongst the Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan Family. I wish strength to his family in this difficult time and god bless. Sincerely Yours, Marcel Holman General Manager Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan, China - Gus' Home away from Home

My sympathy is with Whole family at this time of loss. I will have a glass of wine and remember all the Gus stories. I worked with Gus at B&W for many years (37). I respected his attitude to always do the right thing for the people he managed. In the Cambridge tubeshop, the Melville element shop, Egypt, and China they all have Gus stories. I had the pleasure of working with him in all those locations. I met him most recently in May at the B&W 25 year Club dinner. His attitude at that time was fantastic. I will always remember his parting words. "I am going to lick this thing and see you next year"! What a positive outlook! This is the way I saw him all those years at work too. Every problem had a solution. You just had to persist and find it. Well he will be there next year. Maybe not in body, but he will be remembered in the hearts of all. The world has lost one great guy. My heart goes out to the whole family. Regards Dent McIntyre Retired B&W NDE Manager

Its funny to read how everyone thought of Gus the same way. The jokes, the humour, and yes, his passion for his job. When his job brought him to Melville opening the Babcock & Wilcox plant we got to be very close friends with him and his family. Gus was a plant manager who treated his co-workers with dignity and always seem to make good of the bad. The memories of Gus, is exactly how it is put in his obituary, drinking Grand Marnier in his hot tub......discussing life, and solving the worlds problems. Thinking about it brings back the memories as if it was yesterday. To Eleda and family, Words cannot express the sympathy we feel for you. To Gus, till we meet again.

We are so fortunate to have many happy memories of Zio Gusto - that little sparkle in his eye - you know the one I mean - the one that warned you a pratical joke was about to be played (or had been played and you just didn't know about it yet), generous hugs, the sharing of good food, wine and great conversations - many stories of his life's adventures. His positive outlook and appreciation for his family, life and opportunities was obvious. Taking the time to share a 'joke of the day' that kept everyone around him smiling while he fought his battle was an inspiration and true testament of his strength and courage. You will always be remembered - we love you Zio.
