Alexandra ‘Alex’ Josephine Foto
August 7, 2014
It is with great sadness that our family announces that our Angel has gone to Heaven on Thursday, August 7th, 2014. Deeply loved, admired and adored daughter of Pat and Vito Foto. Beloved granddaughter of Franca and the late Giuseppe Foto, Myriam and Jose Da Costa and the late Tulio Lorza. Loving niece of Anna (Joe), Joe (Linda), Gerardo (Adriana), Gustavo (Maria Fernanda), Myriam (Camilo), Gloria (Diego), Susy (Jose Maria) and Ramiro. Alex will be sadly missed by her cousins and extended family in Colombia, Europe, the U.S.A. and Canada as well as numerous friends around the world. Alex was a graduate of Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School and was an exceptional student and cheerleader at the University of Waterloo. Alex had a passion for diving, running, reading, gymnastics and fundraising. She was dedicated to helping children around the world and was currently sponsoring a child in the Dominican Republic. Alex was a World Vision Ambassador, a leader and organizer. She travelled to Kenya, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and most recently Brazil, to advocate on behalf of children in poverty. Alex assisted with various events including the ‘30 Hour Famine’ and was a great inspiration to all who knew her. She will be truly missed by her mother and father and all those who deeply loved her. Alex will forever live in our hearts. Visitation will be held at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., with prayers at 1:45 p.m. and on Monday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. PETER’S BASILICA, 196 Dufferin Avenue, London, on Tuesday, August 12th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Entombment to follow at St. Peter’s Holy Family Chapel Mausoleum. Those wishing to remember Alex are asked to send flowers or consider a donation to World Vision.

Pat and Vito, we hope that our thoughts of you and Alexandra at this time, can help bring some comfort. As parents of daughters, ourselves, we have a sense of the great loss you must feel. Alexandra was, obviously, a wonderful person who positively impacted so many lives, and left the world a better place. Our heartfelt regrets and best wishes go to you and your family. We're thinking of you. Martyn & Mary Ellen Smith
Alexandra, what an incredibly remarkable young lady.........she has shown us all that it isn't how much time we have here, but what we do with that time. She filled each moment. What an incredible life she led, God must have felt that He couldn't be without her one more day. She truly has blessed so many in her short time and inspired all of us to do the same. She accomplished more than many of us ever will and left the world better than it was before she arrived. May God bless her family and friends during this difficult time.
To the Foto Family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Alex's passing. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and work alongside Alex with the Free the Children MOBilizers. Our group became a closeknit family, having group video chats between cities to plan fundraising opportunities and catch up. To say that the MOBilizer community is devestated is an understatement. We lost one of our brightest lights. Alex was always willing to shine her infectious positivity and energy on us and brought so much to the table. We will miss her incredibly. Thank you for raising such a beautiful soul. We will never forget her. Cassie
Dear Foto Family, I am so sorry for your loss. We were lucky to have had Alex as part of the "diving family". She was a remarkable young lady. You are all in my prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.
Offering our deepest condolences at this tragic time. Your family is in our thoughts. From the Board of Directors and staff of LMHC.
To Pat and Vito; to my cousins Anna and Joseph, and to the entire Foto family, Gil and I offer to you our deepest deepest condolences during this unimaginably tragic time. We can only offer the following words in the hope that time and strength will bring you peace..... “What though the radiance which was once so bright Be now for ever taken from my sight, Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind; In the primal sympathy Which having been must ever be; In the soothing thoughts that spring Out of human suffering; In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind.” – William Wordsworth Sincerely, Cousins Pierangela and Gilbert de Avila
Dear Pat, Guz & Foto Family My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family at this difficult time. Although I personally didn't know Alexandra, no words could possibly describe the sadness felt over the news of your Angel's passing. As a mother I cannot ever imagine the pain and sorrow you must be feeling. I wish you peace and my deepest condolences at this awful time in your lives. Ilda
There just are no words to express how I feel about hearing about the passing of your Angel Alex. The heartfelt sorrow, grieve and pain that you, your family, your friends, Alex's friends our community are experiencing are unimaginable. I never had the pleasure or opportunity to meet or know Alex. But through our mutual friend Carol, Alex's surrogate mother, as Carol always referred her self as. I heard nothing but amazing things about your amazing child. Her accomplishments, her acts of kindness, her always present smile in the pictures I seen. Her acts of selfishness , the humanitarian work she has done in her short time is far more then most people ever do in a life time. The unconditional Love she gave to so many. Alex was truly one of a kind. Alex was a Gift our world was given and then taken away too soon. My heart aches for this unimaginable loss. May Alex Rest In the Sweetest Peace.
Pat and Vito. Lou and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of your daughter Alex, a young, beautiful and vibrant young woman. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family.
Dear Pat and Vito, Our hearts are aching for you both, at the unimaginable loss of your beloved Alex. In the recent years we knew her as our neighbour, it was evident she was a gift from God. Her determination to make the world a better place, as such a young woman, was so inspiring. May the love and support, from all those who knew her, bring you comfort. She will be forever in our hearts. Maureen, Brandon, Michael and Chris Brock
Although it is difficult these last few days to see beyond the sorrow...may looking back in memories help comfort your tomorrows... Much warmth to you both...know that she was an angel on earth and will be in heaven. Vicki
To the Foto Family - I didn't know Alex; however, I offer my deepest sympathy in your tragic loss. (Our granddaughter (a Banting graduate) has just returned from mission work in Nepal and India; she is also involved in World Vision.) Please do know my caring thoughts and prayers are with you. Norma Clare London
Dear Pat and Vito, We are with you, regardless of distance, sharing your sorrow for the loss of our dear Alex but also grateful for the good times spent together. You are in our thoughts and prayers all the time. May God give you serenity and strength to continue, reassured by the belief that she is with Him now as He is with you as well. Un abrazo, de todos y de todo corazon.

The loss of your daughter, Alex, is heart-breaking and beyond the limits of human endurance. But please be assured that Alex has not been lost but, rather, has stepped from this world into another. You will find her in the divine realm and that reunion will be for eternity, while in this world separation is inevitable and bring with it a burning grief. Alex is in a heavenly world —a world which is joyful and illumined. I hope that you find consolation in this. My deepest condolences. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
Vito and Pat, our most deepest sympathies to you and your family at this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May Alex rest in peace amongst the stars in Heaven. Henry and Leanna Westbrook
Pat, There are no words that I can say that begin to express our sympathies for you and your family at this time. It is our hope that God provides you with strength, and faith to help you through this very difficult journey. Alex has left a legacy- a great mark on this world- that has, and will make a difference in all of those she touched. Laura asked me why God takes all of the good people and people we love. I am sure this is a question we are all asking ourselves right now. Our faith needs us to believe that God called Alex home to continue her selfless, passionate work by his side. Alex was a true angel on earth- and will continue to be your beloved guardian angel until you meet again. We continue to pray for Alex and your family that you may find peace and strength at this time. Kelly, Jeff, Laura and Dean
Dear Pat and Vito, our deepest condolences to you and your family. Our words are not adequate to express the sorrow we feel for your loss. Alex was an inspiration to everyone around her. She will be remembered for her generosity and passion to help others. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Alexandra's family. She is clearly an angel gone to heaven before her time, an exceptional young lady.
Pat, my heart cries for you, as I cannot begin to imagine the pain your family bears at this time. When I had the pleasure of bumping into you after our early days of working at the bank together, I remember fondly how your eyes sparkled when I asked how Alex was doing. When I saw her at Saint Catherine of Siena or read about her in the newspaper I often thought about how proud you must be as parents. She was a truly special young lady, a testament to the love and nurturing of her parents. She made a difference. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. In the days, months and years to come may you find strength, comfort and peace in all the people who love you and in the shared memories of Alex. Sincerely Suzanne
Dearest Pat & Vito Words are not enough to express our sorrow and sadness at Alex's passing. We hope that you can find in God the strength needed in this difficult time. Please accept our deepest condolences. You are in our hearts, minds and prayers.
Pat and Vito: Mike, Meghan and I are keeping you in our thoughts in this difficult time for you and your family. Heaven has gained another angel far too soon.
To the Foto and Lorza Families...my deepest condolences. This was such shocking news for all of here at the Royal Bank where Alex's uncle Gus works. He spoke of her to me almost everyday, as much as his own daughters and was very proud of Alex. All of us here send our thoughts and prayers to Pat and her family at this time.
Vito and family -- such sadness for you family. Alex sounds like she was an amazing young woman. With deepest sympathies. Sandi Laird (Citi)
I can still hear Alex walking in and saying "yellow." I can still see her bringing her mother a refresh from Starbuck. I can still see her looking at her mother with a love that only a mother and daughter share. I can still see her wearing her waterloo hoodie with pride. I can still see her traveling the world to help others. I can still see her in her red life guard shirt. I can still see her diving off the platform. Alex will never be forgotten. Alex was the most wonderful person I knew. Her kindness, unconditional love for people and her thirst for live is what truly made her an angel. Alex, you have done so much so far and I know you will continue to do so much more in the years ahead through the passion you have placed in others. See you soon.
It is with great sadness that I have learned of Alex's passing. My most sincere condolences to the Foto and Lorza families. May you find comfort from the love of others at this most difficult time. I taught Alex many years ago in a grade 6/7 class at St. Catherine of Siena school. Alex was a very keen student who demonstrated an interest in children and social justice even then. A few years ago, I ran into Alex at a public pool where she was a life guard. I was very impressed with Alex's maturity as she told me about her continued sincere involvement with helping children in other countries. May God bless you Alex, you will be truly missed by all those who had the pleasure to know you.
My heart is heavy knowing that Alex has been chosen for a plan much greater than any adventure she could have encountered on Earth. In my short time of knowing her it became clear to me very quickly that she would be one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. Never have I seen someone give such meaning to the word "living" and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity for a few conversations with her, some silly and some oriented around her vision for children around the world. I will keep her words with me always as the fire inside of me has been lit to persue a more live-able world for children all around the globe. Alex was the definition of a fighter, a friend and an overall genuine human being. The world would be a much better place if we all strived to be a little more like her. My heart, prayers and thoughts are one hundred percent with Pat and the rest of her incredible family at this time.
Dear Vito and Pat, I am shocked and saddened by your loss. Alex was truly a caring and gifted young woman. We pray that you will find strength and courage through your faith in God. You are in our prayers, Troy and Family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Alex was always a kind and positive girl. Her beauty came from the inside out. My outstanding memory is her smile. I have no words to help ease your pain, just know we are thinking of you often.
Pat and Vito, Alex went to St. Catherine of Siena and some of MTS with our son, Billy. We are presently vacationing in Greece and heard the tragic news and were all distraught. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you and your family since we heard the news. Alex was such a remarkable young woman. Out of all the girls whom my son, Billy, graduated with, Alex is the only one that I remember because she made such an impact on everyone and stood out even at such a young age. Your angel is now watching out over all the young children of World Vision whom she cared deeply for. She was a real humanitarian and am very proud and blessed along with my son to have known her!
Mr. and Mrs. Foto My wife and I offer our deepest condolences on the loss of Alex. I was her Vice-Principal for but one year at Banting but saw so much love, commitment, and goodness radiating from her every day. She was such a special person. She is deeply and sadly missed.
Dear Pat and Vito, My heart is broken for the loss of your beautiful daughter. I will forever be inspired by her passion and dedication. Although it had been a while since seeing her I will be forever grateful to have been gifted with her friendship. It made me so happy seeing pictures of her volunteering in different countries around the world, just radiating with joy. Who she was made a difference and the impact she made on everyone she touched is huge. Alex had the biggest heart and was such a gift. She will always be my hero. My heart and prayers are with you and I pray that God will hold you close at this time.
pat and vito. there are truly no words and my heart is breaking for you both. we will never forget alex. even people who met her only once remember her sparkle and shine. she was such an articulate, passionate, determined young woman and to have accomplished all she did in her too short life.... well, as u know, she was amazing. i have planted a garden in honour of her memory. i will share her story with everyone i know. and as i tend that garden i will think of alex. and you both
Deepest condolences for the loss of your child, Mr. and Mrs. Foto. It is a tremendous loss. I was fortunate to get to know Alexandra a little bit during her time at the University of Waterloo. We started at the same time. Both in the Faculty of Environment, however different programs. We were on the same team during orientation week and I quickly realized that she was a truly special and amazing person. Learning of her passing is very saddening. Her story has touched me on a personal level. Moving forward I will try to live my life to the fullest, cherishing every moment and making meaningful contributions to the community as Alex did. I hope you can take solace in the fact that she made a positive difference in the lives of many across the world. Her legacy will continue to help many people. She will not be forgotten. Your family will be in my prayers. God bless.

God did not make any words that could even come close to express our sadness on the loss of a child, especially a child like Alex, who lived to help other children. My heart bleeds for you Pat and your family. Your little girl's memory shall be eternal. May God Bless you and provide peace to your hearts for the greatest loss imaginable. My most sincere condolences.
Our sincerest condolences at your profound loss. You have been in our thoughts and prayers.
My sincere condolences to the family. Hope they add bicycle ramps in London to make it a much safer place and it would be a great contribution on behalf of Alexandra who was so much into saving people. It is remarkable how much she already helped through her unselfish activities. All of you are in our prayers and hearts.
Our family sends heartfelt condolences. Our memories of Alex are from her early years at Blessed Kateri - even then her spark was apparent. May your entire family find strength during this most difficult, difficult time. Keeping you in our prayers. Mike, Wendy , Carolyn Kosturik and family.
We were devastated to hear of Alex's passing. Such an impressive and passionate young woman taken far too soon. Words cannot begin to ease your pain but know that your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Our most sincere condolences. Drew, Anita, Hannah, Kathleen, and Michael.

There are absolutely no words that can aptly express the sorrow and grief felt over the loss of your beloved Alex...she is loved deeply by family, friends, and a huge community of people around the world. Her compassion for others has made a positive impact on so many...Alex accomplished a tremendous amount in her 19 years on Earth...more than many that are given an entire lifetime. Her passion in everything she set out to do shines brightly in all of her accomplishments and will be her legacy. My son Liam, loves your daughter deeply and I am so grateful that he was gifted with her friendship. My sincerest condolences to your family; may Alex's love of life by the light that you turn to during your darkest hours. Seanda, Liam, and Roan.
Pat and Vito, from the first moment we met Alex we all knew she was something special. So selfless and giving. Emma's first year of diving was challenging but Alex always seemed to be there to lift her spirits and convince her that she could do it. Even after diving and into High School, Emma and Alex stayed in contact and with a quick Facebook message she made time for the students at Catholic Central to talk about her experiences with World Vision. She was a one of a kind and will be truly missed. Chris & Emma Powell
I did not know Alex but am deeply touched by her story. We have a God who loves you. My sincerest condolences. Blessings and prayers.399
Pat, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Alex's acts of kindness will never be forgotten by the lives she touched. She was a bright and beautiful person and will be deeply missed by all. Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your heart.
It's hard to believe that Alex is no longer with us. She is such a beautiful person inside and out, she has touched the hearts of so many, she not only lit up every room she entered but left such an impact on everyone who has ever had the pleasure of knowing her. We cherish the memories we made together and will always keep them close to our hearts. She has done so much for the world and she will never be forgotten. Heaven has gained such a beautiful sweet angel. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to you and your family. May you find comfort and encouragement at this time from your family and friends. May you find solace in knowing that loved ones are never lost to us when they live on in our memories and when a loved one is lost and the present suddenly becomes empty, remember that memories are forever. Nothing can take away the meaning Alex has brought to your life or the love you have shared. These memories are yours to cherish. It will be the little things that you will remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter and although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memories of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring the smiles back again with loving memories. Pat, Vito and the Foto family, Alex will forever be missed and never forgotten, a truly beautiful angel she is. We are thinking about you, love you and are always here for you. God Bless you always. Love Always, Giacomo & Michelle Vivinetto Lina Manganaro Jack, Sandra, Carmelina, Anthony & Philip Manganaro
I had the great honour of meeting Alex through Emma Powell, a student of mine at Catholic Central High School. Alex was invited in to talk with my students and I was so moved by her energy, enthusiasm and genuine kindnesses, that I kept her picture up on the bulletin board all year as an example for them to follow. She talked with them about her experiences with World Vision and her worries for the children in countries where they are not protected as well as they are here. She touched my students' lives; many of them left the classroom after hearing Alex's stories to tell others how this young woman reached out to the world in a way that so few do and therefore, inspired several of them to think about volunteering they way she had. She is someone who will be deeply missed by all who knew her, loved her and met her along the way. My thoughts and prayers are for all of her family and friends and it is with the deepest sympathy that I pray that God will help each of you through the coming days. She was a remarkable and inspirational young lady!
Not only an Angel but also a great student and inspirational member of her college community. We grieve here already over her loss. God bless Alex. And God bless her parents who raised a truly fine human being. May that knowledge help in the times ahead.
Our hearts break as you face this unfathomable loss. I will always be beholden and grateful to Alex for her kindness and compassion. Such a beautiful soul. Wishing you peace.
A bright light has truly gone out. Words cannot express our condolences Pat & Vito. She was my Alex's first best friend at Blessed Kateri and we have very fond memories of her and many pictures that we will always treasure. She touched so many people in her short 19 years. Our prayers are with you ... Love Annette, Rob, Alex & Madison Ryken.
I am so sorry for your loss Pat and Vito. I remember Vito beaming with pride when Alexandra was mentioned in the paper, he posted the article to the white board for everyone to see. She was and still is very much loved by all and will never be forgotten. Even though she was on Earth for a short time, she was still able to make a big positive impact on many lives.
there are no words to deeply express the loss of a child, then one so giving of herself to help others.............There is truth in "God only takes the best" She is flying with the angels now R.I.P. Alex
I'm so sorry for your loss. No parent should have to bury a child. Goddess Bless your family in your time of mourning Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle Autumn's rain. When you wake in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.
My heart is heavy with grief and sadness for you Pat and Vito. What an inspirational young woman you raised and what a blessing it was to have had her within our community. My hope is that you can feel the love being sent to you and that it offers even a sliver of comfort in this dark hour. With much respect, Natalie
Alex was an incredible person and added so much love to our community. We will miss you Alex. You will always be part of the team.
Thoughts and prayers are with your family. An angel taken way to soon. Even though she may not be with you physically, she will be with you spiritually as you heal from all of this. God bless.
Pat, Vito, family and friends we are so sorry for your loss. It was such and honour and privilege to know Alex. I never had the pleasure of knowing Alex even though we attended the same high school, but from what I have seen and heard the last few days she was a bright, hard working, and compassionate young woman. I am so very sorry for her family and friends, but hope that they are able to heal in time. She is now a shining star in the night sky......may she rest in peace.
I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. Alex was truley and incredible person who touched so many lives. Though I had not really connected with her in a fair amount of time she did have a large impact on my life. During our time together in elementary school she was such a role model to myself aswell as many other kids younger than her. She continues to be a role model for many and always will be. Alex thank you for changing my life and for changing the lives of many. Heaven gained the most beautiful angel and earth gained a gaurdian to look on us. Rest in sweetest peace Alex.
We were devastated to hear about Alex's accident and our hearts break for her parents. Our daughter Victoria dove with Alex for years and always looked up to her. Although we hadn't seen her for years, it is apparent that she was busy making her mark on the world and working hard to make it a better place. Our prayers go out to her family and many friends.
May cherished memories of your precious daughter, Alex, provide strength and comfort to you in the days ahead. My deepest sympathy for you and your families.
We feel tremendous and deep sorrow for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers, and we wish you courage and peace.
I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Alex's accident. Alex was a kind, funny, vibrant and generous young woman who I had the honor to get to know in Brazil during the recent World Vision Cup. We were both on team Canada and I will always remember the passion which Alex had for both the issues discussed and the soccer played. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

To the family and friends of Alex, my heart hurts for you and for the world. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting and volunteering with Alex. Her energy, positivity and passion was magnetic. I cannot help but feel angry that Alex`s life was taken too short... she had so many more lives to touch. I promise to carry Alex`s legacy; to carry with me, her heart and her love for the world. All my love and prayers to you in this impossibly difficult time. Michelle Vanderzon
Our family was devastated to hear about Alex's accident. Although no words can really help ease the pain of your sudden loss, just know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. May the love and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ comfort you and give you strength to get through this hard time. Love, Nick, Lore, and Alex
If anyone in our International Development class was truly going to change the world, it was Alex. She has done so much for so many people, and accomplished so much good in her life. I am better for having known her, and will carry her legacy with me for the rest of my life - she will be with me in my work, encouraging me every step of the way like she always did. My heart breaks for you as you deal with this impossible loss, and I pray that in time you might find peace.
I cannot imagine the depth of your pain and loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God, in his infinite grace, help you find solace and peace.

Pat and Vito and Family- Words of condolence cannot even come close to expressing the sorrow I feel at your loss. Alex was truly the very brightest light, who lit up, and lifted up our Bronco family in so many ways. Whenever I would speak with her I'd hear her deep passion and enthusiasm for her studies and her devotion to social justice. We will all miss her deeply. I know that the entire Banting Community along with myself holds all of you in our thoughts and prayers. Paula Greenberg Retired Principal, Banting Secondary School
Dear Pat and Vito, My name is Bill McKeown, and I am a teacher at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School. I had the pleasure of teaching Alex on three occasions, as well as coaching her and working with her on the Banting yearbook. There are no words that can express the sorrow I feel for you and your family. Alex was a wonderful young lady, a great friend to many, and her impact on her community will last for years to come. We at Banting will always be proud of Alex and her legacy at our school. Much Love, Bill.
Pat & Vito, For some moments in life there are no words. You and your family are in our thoughts. Our best wishes and most sincere condolences.
Pat and Vito.. I'm so sorry to hear about the tragic accident that claimed Alex's life. These things happen so quickly and can have such a terrible impact on all involved. Please take care of yourselves and may the many happy memories of Alex continue to bring smiles to your faces for years to come. Dave and Sharon.
Pat and Vito, our deepest sympathies to you and your family at this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May Alex rest in peace. Murray, Judy, Todd, Jason and Tracey.
I have had the great pleasure of getting to know Alex while at the pool. She was always friendly , courteous , respectful , to not only her teammates but the water polo team as well when we used the pool after. Having had a chance to talk to her about some of her goals, her charity work and a little of her diving and how incredibly grounded she was made it very apparent how special this young girl was. I don't think there can be anything harder in this life than losing a child, and I believe even harder given the quality of person Alex was and truly knowing she will continue to inspire and influence many for a long time. Sincerely, Ray Lumsden, Former Head Coach London Water Polo Team.
Dear Pat and Vito, In Alex's short time here with us she did so much in her 19 years. She will be remembered and loved for all of it. Her warmth and generosity and passion to help children will always shine when you think of her. Pat, you will always "feel her" around you when you need her. Hold close all of those wonderful memories. They will help get you through this. Our hearts go out to you and your family. Bea, Dan and Sam Jones
