Alan Muir Bayly

October 26, 2011

September 17, 1916 – October 26, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the father of our family, Alan Muir Bayly at Marian Villa, London in his 96th year.  Beloved husband of  the late Helen (nee Bowen) (1995) and father of Peter Bayly of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Jean Bayly of Canmore, Alberta, Donald Bayly and his wife Anne Cowling of Calgary, Alberta and Jill Waterbury and her husband Mark of London.  Grandfather to Tim, Chris, Christopher and his wife Leah, Andrea, David and Alyssa.  Great grandfather to Erica, Rose and Dawn. Predeceased by his sister, Edith Smith (1999), daughter-in-law Margaret Bayly (2007) and great granddaughter Michelle Bayly (2007).  Alan arrived in London in 1938 from Winnipeg, Manitoba with a University of Manitoba degree in hand to begin a 38-year actuarial science career at the London Life Insurance Co. where he met his wife Helen.  Shortly after their marriage he served four years as an R.C.A.F. fighter pilot and flight instructor during WW II.  He was a man of many interests, a voracious reader of books, lover of nature, travel, music and many sports, in particular tennis and curling. He enjoyed long time memberships at the YMCA, the London Curling Club, Greenhills and the London Hunt and Country Club.  After achieving his lifetime goal of retiring early, Alan enrolled at U.W.O. to study geology. In later life he will be remembered by friends and other fans at Grand Wood Park for his piano playing, sharing the hits of the 1920’s to 40’s for many years.  He will be most remembered by his family for being a lifelong philosopher, optimist and loving teacher who kept his sense of humour to the end.  A memorial service for Alan will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Tuesday, November 8th at 3:00 pm with visitation one hour prior.  Donations in Alan’s memory may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or to the Canadian Association for Humane Trapping.
