Devan Russell James
February 28, 2025
With profound grief and shock, we share the sudden passing of Devan Russell James in his 42nd year.
Devan is survived by his loving parents, Craig and Frances; his brother, Brock (Meghan); and his cherished nieces, Charlie and Ellie.
He refused to let his health issues stand in the way of living meaningfully.
From a young age, Devan developed a passion for collecting—a love that remained with him throughout his life. His enthusiasm for his collections, art, movies, gaming and water activities was matched only by his love of spending time with family and friends, exploring life’s simple pleasures.
A loyal son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend, and colleague, Devan’s greatest joy was being “Uncle Dev” to his nieces. Nothing made him prouder than the special bond he shared with them.
Devan graduated from Western University. He worked at Canada Life Place from the time it opened and took immense pride in his work. Whether it was the events, the season ticket holders, or his colleagues, he valued every aspect of his job. His unwavering dedication was evident—he never missed a shift.
Compassionate, intelligent beyond his years, articulate, and an incredible listener, Devan was a true and loyal friend to all who knew him. He loved his best friend Brock’s “live large” attitude. Though different in many ways, they always made time for each other, creating lasting memories—especially at concerts and sporting events.
Devan was the embodiment of kindness and authenticity, and he is deeply missed by all. His memory will live on in all of us.
“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” – The Beatles
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where a Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. (reception to follow). Devan would have preferred that all who attend dress in casual attire.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Devan’s memory would be greatly appreciated. ( https://app-hsfdonation.heartandstroke.ca/?pagename=DMDonationForm&s_locale=en_CA&s_fT=cont&s_pres=hsweb&s_cscid=hsweb_wtg_inhon )

Fran and family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Although, I did not know Devan, it sounds like he touched many hearts by his kindness and thoughtfulness. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Anita Renders
We are so very sad to learn that one of the biggest fans of the Knights has passed. We enjoyed saying “hello”, and celebrating great plays and goals between periods. He was a wonderful part of the 116 seating area. We will be reminded of his loss every time we pass his door post. Thinking of all his family at this time and we will continue to think of him and his family with passing days.
I knew Devan through work at the arena. He was one of the better people I've ever met anywhere. I can still hear his voice. He was great to chat with - always interesting, and a very kind soul. I'm glad to have known him. We all miss him already.
Still waters run deep. Kids who are sick have an inner strength and wisdom that surpasses and surprises the rest of us. As a little boy, Devan was playfully devilish and fun loving, oblivious to his physical limitations. As a mature young man, he overcame and adapted to his health issues, developed an uncanny ability to remain calm under pressure, and recognized emotional nuance in others. Thoughtful, articulate, self-reflective, and blessed with an ironic sense of humor, he was wonderful to hang with. Behind those dark eyes and ebbing below that warm and sometimes wry smile flowed a quiet river of understanding. I always came away having learned something new and having grown a bit inside, a better person for my time with him. A couple of years ago Devan and I had a debate about the best Beatles songs ever. I was overmatched, of course. When we came to Across the Universe, Devan interpreted for me the mysticism in the song and the haunting words of the chorus. Devan, we love you. Jai guru deva, om. You did change our world. Now the universe is your domain. Uncle Kirk
I am so sorry to hear about Devan! I met him at Canada Life Place when it was still The John Labatt Centre. I go there often and would always visit with him in the parking lot before every show. When there was a problem with one of my tickets, he tried his best to help fix the situation. My favourite memory of Devan was when he told me about meeting Weird Al at the Walmart in White Oaks Mall. Going back to Canada Life Place will not be the same without him there. I will miss him.
Devan was (and in our hearts will always be ) a beautiful, extraordinarily intelligent human being…he amazed me. In our conversations, he stretched my mind, my perspectives, and I always walked away from every conversation with him with a greater appreciation of his insight into the world. Fran, Craig, Brock & Meghan, my heart aches for your loss. 💔
So very sorry for your loss. Devan always had a gentle way about him and had a quiet “good evening” as an usher finishing our shift. Deepest sympathy.
Fran & Craig, I'm so very sorry to hear of the passing of your Devan. Holding your family in my thoughts and prayers. Blessings to you both!

Although we only new Devan when he was a kid, we will always remember him and Brock coming to our door Saturday morning calling for our son to come out and play. He was a wonderful kid who grew up to be a great man. He will be missed and remembered fondly. May he Rest in Peace
May the loving memories you Have In your hearts of your beloved son, Devan, help you through your tragic loss. Loosing a son and a brother is life altering; may you all find a path that carries you through this loss .RIP Devan

It's been too long since I lost saw Devan but I have a lot of fond memories. My favourite is probably the time he took me to every record store in the city (before records were cool again). While visiting these stores I could see that his passion and knowledge for the music eclipsed anything I had. It was something to witness. However, it's his sense of humour and kind heart that is most memorable for me. Always looking for a laugh and never one to put others down. Gone too soon.
Deepest condolences to Devan's family, wishing you strength as you navigate through the minutes, hours, days, in one of the most difficult times in your lives, may you find peace and strength in his memories. Devan - with the gentle smile will be missed dearly Suzanne Schruder Co-worker at Canada Life Place
I was floored by this news. I have known Devan for a very long time through work. He was always the most polite nicest person I have ever dealt with. I will miss first bumping him each time I passed him at his spot on the concourse. My condolences to all his loved ones.
Condolences to his family. I knew Devin for many years as a co worker at Bud Gardens and JLC. He was a kond gentle wonderful guy. RIP
I worked with Devan when it was the JLC and then the Bud for 10 years. Before every shift when we worked I would meet him in the Market where we were joined by other Bud staff. I'm 34 years older than Devan and I was always impressed by his subtle knowledge and quiet demeanour. What a vast knowledge of life he had !!! He will be missed!
Though my meeting Devan and interaction with him was brief, he presented himself as a friendly, wholesome chap, who was ever diligent to his work and work family. Ever present and thoughtful, his countenance will be missed at Canada Life Place (#Budwieser Gardens, #John Labatt Center) Love Lives On.
We are so profoundly saddened by your unbelievable loss of Devan. We cannot say any words to comfort you... we send our love and deepest condolences to you and your family. xo
I worked with Devan at Canada Life Place. Devan was not only a colleague he was a great friend. Working both the Knights games and the Parking Lot our paths crossed frequently. I thoroughly enjoyed our time pregame at the Market for food and conversation. Devan was indeed a wealth of knowledge and was a very easy person to communicate with. Devan loved his family and spoke often of them during our gatherings. He was a very dedicated employee and Loved his job. Rest in Peace my Friend ❤️🙏
