Dr. Robert Frederick Southern

December 21, 2024

Dr. Robert Frederick Southern of London died peacefully at LHSC – University Hospital on Saturday, December 21st, 2024, in his 87th year. Beloved husband of Charlotte Jane Southern (née McDougall), for over 59 years. Loving father of Michael (Melanie) and Leslie Southern. Cherished grandfather of Eliyah Southern. Survived by his siblings and proud brother of Shirley Jennings (Capt. Peter, deceased) of Ottawa, Marilyn Begg (Frank) and Jim Southern (Carol), both of St. Thomas, Ontario. Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews; friend and colleague to many.

Robert was endlessly devoted to his family. Beyond his pride for them, he enjoyed a distinguished life as a physician after graduating from the University of Western Ontario Medical School in 1962. He began his career in general practice in Shelburne, Ontario, and later moved to London where he chose to specialize in Internal Medicine. His care for others was shown through his generous availability to those seeking guidance or direction. He particularly valued his time spent teaching and mentoring generations of new doctors at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London. He was honoured by the university at the end of his career when they bestowed upon him the title of Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Robert enjoyed many hobbies, and throughout his life he loved to ski, garden and travel as long as he was able. He was passionate about both cooking and enjoying different kinds of gourmet meals with family and friends and was always trying to learn something new for himself be it woodworking, equestrian riding, badminton and even golf.

Cremation has occurred. Visitation with the family will be held at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, 1246 Oxford Street West, London on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Church hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Joseph’s Hospice of London; the Clinical Neurosciences program of the London Health Sciences Foundation; or, to the “Window Restoration Project” of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church in London, Ontario.

Dear Charlotte, I heard from Paul Cooper today that Bob had died and wish to offer you my deepest sympathies on your loss. Bob was a wonderful mentor to me when I was a resident at Western, and at St. Joe's, then a wonderfully supportive colleague during the years I worked there. St. Joe's, and Bob in particular, hold a special place in my heart. I saw him once or twice when I returned to London shortly after we moved to Vancouver, but alas, lost touch over the years. Bob was one of those people who gave you his friendship and support without reservation, and asking nothing in return. He played a significant part in the type of physician I became - caring, considerate, knowledgeable and patient. I'll never forget my embarrassment in my internship year when Bob, my attending, asked me on rounds one day what is now a fairly simple question and I couldn't answer it. That never happened again!! My sympathies to you and your family. And my thanks to Bob for being such a wonderful role model.

I have such love and admiration for this man: he was generous with his love, time and resources, unfailingly compassionate, curious, caring, a skilled healer and he had a dry wit that was so intelligent and entertaining. He was a renaissance man who enjoyed the arts, travel, and good conversation. His was a great example to conduct a good life. Uncle Bob's time on this planet positively impacted so many people, and he surely will be missed. Rest in peace, Uncle Bob. Always my FUB (Favourite Uncle Bob). ❤️
