Eva Anita (nee Stewart) Stickland

December 4, 2024

Peacefully with family by her side at University Hospital on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, in London, Ontario, in her 98th year.  Beloved wife of the late Captain Donald Stickland (1998).  Loving mother of David (Chelsea) and Douglas (Sheila).  Adored and cherished grandmother of Sarah (Brett) and Jillian (Sean).

Eva (“Eve”) was born in Victoria, B.C., and moved to London, Ontario, in 1954 when she married her husband, Don.  She was a talented local artist in the London area.  Her interest in painting started when she was 18 and flourished over the next 80 years.  She took numerous courses during her lifetime, including drawing, painting, and photography.  At the age of 44, Eve entered the visual arts program as a part-time mature student at Western University, and about ten years later, in 1983, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Honours degree.

Over the years, she exhibited her paintings in the London area, including at Museum London and in Woodstock, Elora, and Grand Bend.   A key highlight of her career as an artist was when she travelled to the south of France and spent two weeks near the Mediterranean Sea in a monastery in Limoux, where she spent her days painting the views of the French countryside. Eve belonged to many local artist groups, including the Brush and Palette Club and the Gallery Painting Group, and was a regular exhibitor for many years at Portside Gallery in Port Stanley. Eve also had a passion for creative writing and attended a graduate level creative writing program at the University of Windsor (after Western).  She was published many times as a freelance writer, including in Reader’s Digest.

Eve’s creative passion for the arts was infectious to everyone who knew her, and her family feels blessed to be able to enjoy the legacy of her many paintings which will hang on the walls of their homes for many, many years to come.

Eve had a very kind and loving soul, which she openly shared with everyone she met.  She believed that all people deserved to be loved and that love can solve anything and everything.  She consistently modelled her beliefs through her compassionate and caring acts of service towards each person in her life.  She lived her life with a very strong faith and her blessings to others extended well beyond her family.

It is impossible to convey how special Eva was to each of us.  Her sparkle, zest for life, positivity, enthusiasm, and love will resonate in all of us forever. (Philippians 4:13)

A funeral service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Wednesday, December 11th, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with visitation two hours prior, starting at 11:00 a.m.  Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Those wishing to donate in memory of Eva are asked to consider contributing to StreetSoccer London, a program that serves the homeless and marginalized in London.  Contributions can be made by etransfer: davidsidney@rogers.com

So many years ago, Don and I worked with Christian Service Brigade Boys Club in London. Don and Eve were like a second family. Rest in peace, dear wonderful lady.

Eva was a truly special woman to me. She taught me things , gave me confidence . Took me to the lake when my partner passed and I found this huge piece of wood . I carried it home and I still have it . She knew I needed to feel and see the water . She encouraged my photography on many levels . I tagged along with the group on outings so I could take pictures ! Which I still have ! Her zest for life , the love she showed me when my partner passed helped me ! She knew him as well . Her laughter was heartfelt to those who knew her . The love for her I will always keep in my heart ! I love you Miss Eva .

It didn’t matter if you just met or had known her, your whole life, she treated you like family and with a big warm hug. Eva, it always brought me great joy to see you. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Eve was such an integral part of our church family and so well loved. And she loved well each reader who came to the library to borrow or return a book. Eve always had a positive compliment, a ready smile, and a twinkle in her eyes. I bless her memory.

I didn't know Eva well, but if there is one thing I can take away from the times I got to meet her it was the kindness she exhuded, even with her limitations, and although in her 90's she still very much had a charm about her.
