Nicholas “John” Nimchuk

Nicholas John Nimchuk, CD1, passed peacefully and surrounded by all of his immediate family, on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at LHSC – University Hospital, London, Ontario, of complications from pneumonia after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on December 21, 1942, he enlisted at the age of 17 in Halifax and served in the RCAF for 25 years. He was most known as the retired owner of J&J Gas Bar in Shawville, Quebec and beloved school bus driver in Pontiac County. As a business owner, he worked closely with Pontiac High School to provide work opportunities for their trades program and believed that everyone deserved a chance, and that no man was greater than any other. John was active in the Masonic Order and Shriners in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. He served as Master of Ceremonies in the Grand Lodge of Quebec, under Doug McLean. An avid outdoorsman who enjoyed winter sports, hunting, fishing and foraging, and even taught winter outdoor survival in the forces. John enjoyed enabling his wife and children’s love of horses, which fulfilled his childhood dream of being a cowboy just like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. John was predeceased by his mother, Louise Zillman; father, Thomas Nimchuk; sisters, Sharon and Joyce; and brother, James. Survived by his wife, Jo Anne Hobbs; children: Bernice, Helen Anne (Willie), Nicholas Ian (Gracie), Johanna (Harry) and Michael (Helene); grandchildren: Nicholas George (Leeanne), Shawn (Ariana), Javan, Alaya, Brynleigh and Lenox; siblings: Tommy (Betty), Dorothy (Bob), Helen (Jim), Marion (Donny) and Walter (Suzanne); sister-in-law, Marilyn (Lloyd); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. No service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate in honour of John to Wounded Warriors Canada or The Lewy Body Dementia Research Fund at University of Western Ontario.
