Ian Scott Turnbull

October 14, 2023

Ian Scott Turnbull, 58, of South Bruce Peninsula, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

Scott was born on March 5, 1965, in Exeter, to his parents, Leslie Carl Turnbull and Lois Ellen Turnbull. Growing up on a farm in Ontario, it was no surprise that Scott had a fondness for the outdoors, made even more evident by his time as a teen spent on a cattle ranch in Alberta. Outside of farm life, he displayed an unwavering passion for sports as a dedicated Philadelphia Flyers fan and player of the South Huron District High School football team. Scott’s lifelong commitment to volunteer work and serving others took root when he embraced the role of mentor in the Big Brother program. Following this, Scott completed Bible college, fostering an enduring relationship with God. He remained open-minded, relished in profound conversations about life’s intricacies, and inspired those in his circle to explore their unique connections to God.

As the youngest of four, Scott cherished the role as the fun-loving uncle. He generously shared his wisdom and life skills with his little nephews and nieces, imparting valuable lessons such as the art of throwing a football and the importance of perseverance. Throughout his life, he possessed a genuine and innate ability to connect with and comprehend the world of children, going above and beyond to be the best uncle and great-uncle he could be.

Scott met Lori in 1989 at a volleyball night at their church, West London Alliance, and it was love at first “spike”. The pair married within a year of meeting in December 1990 at the same church, where Scott served on the board of elders and joined with Lori in children’s ministries. With the purchase of their first house in the heart of London, they not only found a place to call home, but also a place to nurture the seeds of their growing family. In 1993, they welcomed their first son, Ian, into the world, marking the beginning of their beautiful adventure as parents. As a trio, they spent a year in Melbourne, Australia in 1995-1996 on a firefighter exchange program. A few years later, in 1997, they embraced the arrival of their son Liam, followed by the birth of their daughter Erin in 1999.

What truly set Scott and Lori apart in their unwavering commitment to their family’s well-being was the selfless decision they made to homeschool their children until they reached high school. Scott’s expertise lay in history, and he lovingly shared his passion for the subject with their kids. Through this homeschooling journey, they not only fostered a deep love for learning, but also ensured that their family spent the most quality time together. Their adventures extended far beyond London to their family trips to Europe, with Scott making sure to stop at every war museum along the way. While Scott might not have been a top-notch photographer, he was determined to capture every moment, sometimes even cropping out his shortest child to get a clear shot of the monumental backdrop.

In a passionate commitment spanning over three decades, Scott dedicated 35 years of his life to the London Fire Department, ascending through the ranks until he earned the title of District Chief Turnbull. His devotion knew no bounds, extending beyond the call of duty as he often answered late-night phone calls from his squad members, ever the guiding light and trusted mentor to aspiring firefighters. As a first responder, Scott embodied the spirit of selflessness, tirelessly investing his life in the service of others. He was one of the district chiefs on scene on December 11, 2020, when Teeple Terrace saw a terrible building collapse.

Scott approached his kids’ sports with the same passion and dedication he brought to everything in life. He was a familiar face at their games, always right there at the edge of the action, whether he was watching attentively from the boards or offering his coaching wisdom from the bench, even for more laidback house league sports. He had a simple but powerful message that he instilled in them – to always give their best, even if they were just starting out. He never missed a single tournament, tryout, or practice, and he had an affinity for playing country music that brightened up the rides for all the kids he carpooled. Along the way, he would often share life advice, imparting valuable lessons to his young passengers.

Scott was a true family man, exemplifying unwavering commitment as a brother, son, and nephew, and was always ready to extend a helping hand, even in the most discreet manner. He was never looking for recognition and always put others first. Even when coming from a demanding 24-hour shift at the fire station, he would never slow down if there was a task to be done at his parents’ farm or for his two sisters and brother. During family gatherings, he wouldn’t rest until he ensured that everyone else could.

As a farm boy, leaving London had always been a dream for Scott, one that he had the immense joy of fulfilling when, in 2022, he and Lori decided to part ways with their second home in the city. They ventured north to the South Bruce Peninsula, where they settled on their little piece of paradise on Boat Lake. Together, they embarked on a transformative journey, dismantling the aging log cabin built by Lori’s father that had stood on the property for over seventy years. In its place, they constructed their dream home, blessed with a breathtaking lakefront view. Amid the construction endeavors, Scott and Lori reveled in the enchanting offerings of South Bruce. They hiked along the Bruce Trail, explored the local lakes by kayak, pedaled through the scenic beauty of Sauble Beach, and embraced the winters with cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. Scott’s lifestyle emphasized the significance of physical fitness and the value of cherishing God’s creation. Scott was a lifelong learner and could often be found “social distancing” with a book at the end of the dock. Scott and Lori’s new life was a testament to their adventurous spirits and their ability to find beauty and joy in the simple pleasures of each day.

Scott found his place in the tightly knit community of Boat Lake, taking on the role as a board member of the cottagers’ association, doing maintenance on the private road, and forging even stronger bonds with his neighbours as he took up full-time status on the lakefront. Scott was never afraid to lend a helping hand to others in the area, often finding himself labouring under the sun on construction projects with his friends or volunteering in the Wiarton Salvation Army food bank where his intense organizational skills came in handy. During the warm summer evenings, Scott let his hair down and relished the simple joys of life in Boat Lake: campfires, gatherings with friends, sharing good food and drinks, and watching sunsets from a paddleboard.

In closing, Scott’s life was graced with love, faith, strongly held values, hard work, and adventure. His legacy of family, community, and dedication to helping others will continue to inspire those who crossed his path. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Scott is survived by his loving wife, Lori, and their children, Ian, Liam, and Erin, and daughter-in-law Amanda who he loved as his own. He also leaves behind his devoted parents, Carl and Lois, and his siblings, Jan (Doug) Easton, Yvonne (Neil) Ostrander, and David (Nadine) Turnbull. In addition to these close family ties, Scott leaves behind a wide circle of nephews, nieces, relatives, friends, fellow firefighters, and a community he held dear. His family extends heartfelt gratitude to all those who have offered their support, friendship, assistance, and cherished memories of Scott during this challenging time.

A visitation in Scott’s memory will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where a funeral service to celebrate his life will be conducted on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. A livestream of the service will be available for those unable to attend in person. Dear Lori and family, Back in the 90's at WLA Scott and I both served in various capacities. Especially memorable are the many hours we spent on the sets for the Christmas plays that were being produced at that time. I loved working with him on those stage projects. He always knew what to do and how to proceed. He was a 'git-er-done' kind of guy. After the plays were over we got to tear it all down and often wound up storing some of the set in an empty chicken coup on his family's farm in Corbett and then a coffee with his mom in the kitchen of their recently built log home. I have nothing but fond memories of the time that we served together. He was a man of integrity, commitment and purpose. Anne and I were both moved by the tributes we heard on the live stream service and we know you will miss him. May the grace of our kind and gracious saviour sustain you in the coming months and years.

Scott was truly one of a kind. What I loved about Scott was that he was his own man. He had little patience for nonsense but was extremely patient with those in need. He was generous, kind and willing to serve those in need. Lori may you and your family experience the peace and comfort that only our loving Saviour can give.

~ Peter Vanderley

To the Turnbull family, my deepest condolences to each and every one of you. Scott and I spoke just a few weeks ago when he happened to run across a photo on Facebook. Jabbing ensued, as it always did. We talked shop for a moment but mostly about life and the future. He was happy. As happy as I had ever known him. The words he shared with me that day, I’ve reread countless times since. May his legacy live on in all those he mentored to be self-thinkers devoted to their respective crafts and to live life without fear. Until the day we meet again, brother!

~ Paul

So saddened to hear this, Lori. Scott coached my son in soccer years ago, and we still have fond memories of those times. Sincere condolences to you and your family.

~ Tracy Taylor

Lori, Erin, Ian and Liam our deepest condolences to you all. We got to know you both when coaching Erin in hockey. Scott was always willing to fill in as timekeeper when he was there to watch her play hockey. Reading the tributes confirms how great of a person Scott was and will be missed, but he left his great influence among many people. Tony and Lorraine Pileggi

I have many fond memories of Scott! I will always remember the trip my brother Doug and I took camping with Scott in the Smoky Mountains. We had beautiful hikes, good talks and good food. He was such a considerate and caring cousin with a great sense of humor! It doesn’t seem possible he has gone on ahead already. I look forward to seeing him again💕

~ Marilyn Joyce

I first worked with Scott at 6 Co., in my first year on the job. He was very friendly and straight forward, never being misleading or fake. You always knew exactly where you stood and what he meant. Years later, he was my Captain at 12 Co. and then as DC. We often shared stories and challenges related to having sons who experienced concussions, due to hockey. We talked about life and our similar upbringing. Big hugs to your family. I am sorry not to be able to attend the vistation or funeral due to sickness, but will remember Scott fondly.

~ Randy Geene

Scott was Chris’ soccer coach for several years. He was a role model of kindness, strength and always giving your best to others. Chris often spoke fondly of Coach Scott and the lessons he learned from his coach served him well in life. I would like to think that Scott is already putting together his soccer team in heaven. No doubt Chris has already signed up. My prayers are with you at this time and always. Love Val

Hey Scott, I just realized that we were neighbours for nearly 19 years until you moved up North. I got to see you Coach Liam and Austin in soccer and hung out a few times at Liam's hockey games with you. When I was re-shingling my roof, without me asking, you came down and spent a full day on the roof with me, that was great help by way, we got most of it done that day. Jitka and Lori would walk Rocky and Ruby on a regular bases, your love and tenderness towards animals was deep in you, which is why Ruby loved to see you when you came around. On Jitka's hallmark birthday this summer there was one place she wanted to go and that was to drive the 5 hr return trip to visit you guys, so I brought the steaks and you bbq'd them to perfection, that was a good day. We already had another visit planned this autumn to see you again, I was looking forward to seeing the garage you built and just hanging out. I was enjoying our budding relationship and was looking forward to the years ahead, sadly that has been cut down. I noticed through the years you lived your days with purpose and had no regrets, what ever you were doing you were in it all the way. I like that. Tell me that Ruby wasn't super excited to see you when you got there? We are missing you already buddy. We will be sure to go and visit Lori and she can tell me what needs fixing while we are there, I know you would do the same if our places were traded.

Scott, it was so shocking and saddening to learn of your passing. You took amazing care of yourself and even greater care for others. The sacrifices you made for your family, in particular, you and Lori helping to home school the kids until high school, is second to none in terms selflessness and caringness. You leave behind a beautiful family and legacy that will live on through them.

~ Charlie

Lori and family. Cindy and I were truly shocked when we learned of his passing. Having had the privilege of working with Scott for many years on different trucks it hurt to learn of his passing. Scott and I had many late night conversations on life, family and kids, and the fire department. Scott was a phenomenal person first and a great co-worker to have known. Thanks for sharing him with us. Cindy and I send our deepest condolences.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Scott. I was fortunate enough to have Scott as my driver for some of the last years of my career at Station 4. Scott was an excellent and dedicated firefighter and an even better person. I know that family was first and foremost and he will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind.
