Rene “Mike” Jack Vandenhoff
October 21, 1935 - April 24, 2023
Passed away, peacefully, on Monday, April 24, 2023, in London, ON in his 88th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 45 years, Evelyn (2006). Dear father of Paul (Monica) of Birr, ON, Michael of Kitchener, ON, and Jan (Paul) of San Jose, California. Loving Opa of Jacqueline who was his pride and joy and favourite actress, who was always able to make him laugh. Special “Opa” to Mango, our family German Shepherd who was always at Mike’s side providing constant joy and companionship. Loving brother to 11 brothers and sisters. Born October 21, 1935 in Eindhoven, Netherlands to the late Johannus and Henrietta Vandenhoff. Later, lovingly called son by the late Cornelia Vandenhoff (née Speek).
Leaving behind the destruction of War in Holland with his entire family in 1953, Dad came to Canada in search of a better life. He found it in Kitchener, ON, where he met and married Evelyn. He worked incredibly hard to provide for his family, being employed at Uniroyal/Goodrich for 32 years and bartending part-time during Oktoberfest and other special events. His passions were gardening at home, cycling the pathways of Waterloo Region, but most of all, Saturday afternoon BBQs with family, friends, and neighbours. Mike and Evelyn truly enjoyed the company of all who visited their backyard.
A heartfelt thank-you to Gord, for his weekly porch visits. Special thank-you to the Ailsa Craig Day Program, McCormick Home, and the doctors, nurses and personal support workers of Meadow Park Long Term Care, who provided incredible and passionate care, enhancing his quality of life in his final years. Thank-you to the many friends and family that brightened Mike’s days with your calls, cards, and visits.
In keeping with Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Mike will be interred alongside his wife, Evelyn, at Williamsburg Dedication Centre in Kitchener, ON in a private ceremony to be held at a later date. Thank-you to Westview Funeral Chapel in London, ON for providing all arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to and recognizing the people in your community who care for our loved ones.
Mike would like to pass along his final message: “To enjoy life, be grateful.” Mike enjoyed life because he was grateful for all he had in family and friends.
