David McKay

November 19, 1942 - February 24, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of David McKay, with family and friends always by his side, at Victoria Hospital on Friday, February 24, 2023, at age 80. He will be truly missed by his son Scott; daughters, Chrysta and Debbie; and grand puppy Niko. Dave was born on November 19, 1942, in London, Ontario to William and Mona McKay. Dave met and fell in love with the late Elaine McKay (née Chaimbrone). They were married for 41 years and were with each other through all of life’s ups and downs.

Dave held many titles, but his favourite role was being a father. He loved spending time with his adult children. He always taught us to stand tall, be proud, and know ourselves in all situations and supported us throughout our many accomplishments and difficulties.

Stretch spent over 20 years working for General Motors. When he wasn’t working, he could be found on the courts or the diamond. He was a gifted athlete and loved playing basketball and baseball with his long term friends.

Memorial services will be held at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. Visitation will take place on Monday, March 6, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow.

I met Dave and Elaine as a realtor when they were selling their place on Huron St. In Grand Bend and later bought the property in Deer Run. They were such great people to work with. I’d later see them out for meals, and Dave at the Riverbend on wing nights. Im sorry for your loss.

I first met David when I met his parents Bill and Mona or Moner as David called his mom affectionately and she would laugh that wonderful laugh of hers every time. I was at my grandmothers house across the street on Eastman Ave and they were great friends. They all would come up to the cottage outside of Grand Bend and we would have a great time laughing and teasing and playing cards. David called me Stretch as well, I was probably about 10 and tall for my age, he was 10 years older than me and it 'bugged' me that he teased me which he enjoyed thoroughly haha. I loved my time with my grandma and the McKays because they were always laughing. I remember David always was smiling and in a good mood. When I saw his picture in the paper I recognized him right away even without looking at his name. He sounds like he turned into a wonderful man and a father to be proud of. My sincere condolences. Hi guys, John & Cindy from Florida. We were very sad to hear about Dave, he was a good friend. John & Dave had many good battles on the basketball court, John says his ribs are still healing. Thinking of you all at this very sad time.

Dave, husband, father and friend had the most infectious laugh. I always knew the fellas were close and having a great time when I would hear him laugh. My parents had great times enjoying Elaine and Dave’s company. Amazing folks who I will never forget. God Bless

Scott, Chrysta and Debbie: My sincere condolences to all and bless you for taking such good care of your dad. Time kept weaving together the life paths of Dave and myself. I knew Dave since we were about 4 or 5. His mother was a friend of Alice Daley, on Rosedale Ave, where I grew up. He would come with his mother when she came to visit and we’d play together. Later, played basketball against him. Then, he and Elaine moved to Grand Bend when they retired. He was such a warm and cheerful gentleman. Sincerely, Al Otton (Oz) and Alison Carnie

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I knew him during his teenage years and can vouch for his basketball abilities and as well a true sportsman. Although he was older than me and my buddies he was always willing to take the time to coach us on basketball skills on the courts around Sir Adam Beck and St. Pat's. The name Stretch was appropriate as he got most of the rebounds. May he rest in peace.

Dave was a great friend and we will miss him terribly. We spent many, many hours with Dave and Elaine socializing at our Grand Bend cottages, and after Elaine’s passing with Dave alone. We enjoyed many happy times together but especially had great fun teasing each other during football and baseball seasons. While to most he was known as “Stretch”, to us he will always be remembered as “Big Dog”. We will miss his big smile and wonderful sense of humour. We take comfort from the fact that he has now re-joined the love of his life in heaven. Rest In Peace Dave.
