Sonia Madeleine Fortier (née Sobchuk)
May 10, 1936 - February 17, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of our beloved wife, mother, baba, Sonia, at Westmount Gardens, at the age of 86, on Friday February 17th, 2023. She leaves to mourn her husband Louis, their children Lee Ann Bruzas, John Fortier (Anna), Sophia Fortier (Jason Mellors), Stash Fortier (Elizabeth), and their grandchildren Ashley, James, Johnny, Jenna, Jack, Ruby, Scotty and Cole.
She will be missed by her brother Gary (Bonnie) and her brothers/sisters-in-law, Victor (Rachelle), Robert (Helene), Denis (Josette), Paulette (Ron Sharp), Colette (Robert Grant).
She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Sophia and Stanley Sobchuk, and her siblings Brona, Paul, Pauline, Jenny, Alex, John, Ann, Mike, Mary, and Helen.
Sonia was born in Iroquois Falls into the large Sobchuk family and spent almost her entire life there. After a courtship that began in 1954, Mom and Dad married in 1958. Sonia was a wonderful spouse and mother. Sonia went to North Bay Teachers’ College to earn her teaching certificate and later earned her degree in English from the University of Hearst. She taught within the Iroquois Falls Public School Board in a variety of capacities including Vice Principal and Head Librarian. She was an executive member of the former FWTAO (Federation of Women Teachers of Ontario).
Mom and Dad loved their time at the cottage at Nellie Lake spending over 25 years at their majestic oasis hosting countless parties and family get-togethers. Baba and Pere moved to London, Ontario in 2018 to be closer to all of their children and grandchildren.
Sonia’s religious faith was very important to her. She was a very active member of the Iroquois Falls St. Mark’s Anglican Church. She was an original founder of the annual Terry Fox Run Fundraiser in Iroquois Falls and she was also very involved with the Public Library which was dear to her heart. Baba was also renowned for her prize-winning chocolate cakes.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at Westview Funeral Chapel at 709 Wonderland Road North, London, Ontario on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023 from 10:00am to 12:00pm followed by the funeral service at 12:00pm. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral will be livestreamed. The reception will take place at the Highland Country Club (1922 Highland Heights) commencing at 1:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, for those wishing, donations can be made to The War Amps and/or St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Iroquois Falls. Interment will take place in the spring in her hometown of Iroquois Falls.

I was so sorry to hear of Sonia’s passing. She was a great lady and a wonderful friend. My wife, Eleanore and I had the privelege of teaching with her for several years. We shared so many wonderful memories. To Louis and the family, I extend my hesrtfelt sympathy.
